I use the Seachem Mg I just follow the directions for the beginer which I think is 1 TSP per 20g twice a week, but I normally do once a week half way between my water changes and I have noticed a difference. The article Muck posted says it is more for SPS but I noticed more of a difference in my LPS and softies

Epson Salts is the cheap alternative (kinda like using pickling lime for Kalk) :D

Dowflake is used for raising calcium, instead of using a brand name calcium chloride such as Turbo Calcium

first of all are you just trying to maintain your Mg or correct a low Mg, if you are trying to corect a low Mg use a pure Mg supplement not a 2 part system or you will throw your other chemicals out of wack also. I have safly raised Mg by 500 PPm over 2 days but to be safe do 100 ppm a day.

I use the seachem Mg and mix it with warm RO water in a super saturated mix (about 1 cup per gal) then I add it to my sump and check my levels again the next morning. a good idea might be to do this using 1/2 a cup and see how much that raises your Mg, then you will know how much you need to add to get you to the right area.

First, test your tank(s) for Mg. Then use the calculators in the second thread of the "Reef" forum to determine who much you need to add. I use Kent's product. The calculator will tell you how much of which product to use.

1400 is a good number to aim for, concider 1200 a minimum. i usaly take mine up to about 1350 when I do a fix. also note it will be easier to keep your Ca level up once you bring it up to a proper level as at 1000ppm you should be having a slight Ca problem but not much.
