Hi I am setting up a new tank with halide retrofit and don't have any covers for the lights so I want to add it to protect them since they are close to the water.

Does anyone know where you can buy UV protected acrylic in Calgary, and is this even neccessary? Will normal acrylic work otherwise?

Thanks

best place to get proper uv glass - is home despots. The halogen floodlights they sell (11$) come with a tempered UV filtered glass cover. Size is roughly 6 x 10".

It's the main reason why a lot of reefers doing HQI retrofits use these housings.

Thanks Andy, but unfortunately mine aren't hqi so a larger area is needed. About 10-12" square so I'd prefer to get a sheet and cut it to fit. I wonder if they sell a UV plexiglass / acrylic or a UV spray or something??

Is there such a thing as UV acrylic? I didn't know there was.

Just regular old glass will do. 4mm or whatever. You can get thinner glass too but I'd be worried it would be too brittle (one hard bump and ...)

UV glass is not required with SE bulbs as it is already built into the glass of the bulb... UV glass is only required for DE bulbs
