Well Ihave almost completed building my stand for my new tank 2x4 framed, (solid Maple exterior)

I always enjoy tagging along on other peoples threads as they start setting up there tank, so I thought I should start a thread, and start taking some pics.

I decided to go Cube, Dims will be 30 x30x 25, roughly 97 Gallons, I have had the tank custom made at Sea star with 1/2 glass and all the holes pre drilled. I have purchased a Dart for a closed loop pump. 2 inch intake and 4 drilled returns.

Overflow will be a 13 x 3 box down the center of the back with 2 x 1 inch stockman's 1 hole is also drilled for the return from sump. For a return pump I think Im gonna go with a blueline, Sump is 30x16x16, and a G3 skimmer. Lighting is 2 x 250 HQI hamilton pendants 14K.

Ill update pics as progress is made throught the next 2 weeks, I hope to have it set up and running by next weekend,

Wow, Snoop-dogg himself!

That woodworking is awesome! Did you make those designs, or did you use pieces that were incorporated into the stand's design?

I anticipate this being an awesome project!

Cheers,

Chris

I kinda saw something similar with the pilar idea on RC, drew up a plan ( in my head) and made it all out of 2x8 maple planks, lotta work...

Still gotta make the raised panel doors, but I might get a cabinet shop to do them because I could buy them cheape then what it would cost for me to make them :)

Great looking work there Snoop!!
Any ideas on what kind of stain your going to use?

Snoop Dog
11-29-2005, 03:15 PM
I bought a dark walnut stain, but I was not happy with the test sample, so Im gonna pick up a dark Cherry/mohoganny stain today,

Ya the glass has been at Ocean aquatics for about 2 weeks, a little trouble with the overflow box,

thanks for the comps..

Holey wow that's some piping, and I thought the plumbing on my cube was akin to a distillery, it's nothing compared to that monstrous closed loop.

Although .. one question ... Is that a check valve on the closed loop intake ??????

bluetang
12-15-2005, 03:55 PM
Not a check valve, There is a ball valve on the closed loop intake just as a precausion. You never know when you will have to take out the pump. Don't want to drain the tank on the floor. :-)

muck
12-15-2005, 04:03 PM
I was thinking that it was a check valve too. The ball valves are definately a good idea IMO.
I want to thank you guys for giving me some good ideas on how to run my CL on my new tank..

Chin_Lee
12-15-2005, 04:03 PM
Yo snoop
thats some good thinking on the plumbing. good job. Whats your approx GPH into your tank from the return pump? I'm interested to know how your double standpipes will handle the gph cuz I'm looking to do the same kinda set up on my next tank. I believe they are 1 1/4" on the outside and 1" on the inside?

Chin_Lee
12-15-2005, 04:09 PM
FYI Snoop
I've heard from many people that the lock line parts (that are above the water line) will introduce microbubbles into the main tank. keep that in mind if you are trying to troubleshoot that potential problem when you get the water moving.

Snoop Dog
12-15-2005, 05:33 PM
return pump is a blue line 30x, pressure rated 1100GPH, well see how it works,

closed loop is a Dart,

Ill post some better shots tonight,

Delphinus
12-15-2005, 05:34 PM
Oh, a ball valve. Of course, that totally makes sense. I didn't see the lever so I thought maybe it was a check valve at first.

Anyhow, very impressive pipe work. Good luck with the filling and so on, can't wait to see the next results. Snoop as you might recall I have a 30" cube I'm setting up too. Hopefully I can put up some pics of it soon. Anyhow I think it's pretty neat that two 30" cubes are coming up at the same time on Canreef. :)

Snoop Dog
12-15-2005, 05:36 PM
Thanks for the tip on the lockline, I had some issues on my last tank, but they were minimal. basically a small blast every minute or 2, The stockmens are 1 1/4 and 1 inch ID as you said, my only conern is balancing the 2 in one overflow?

All plumbing is complete, and I have installed my pedant light stand. It is full adjustable so I can raise it to do maintenance or for easy adjustment of lighting height. I need to trim down my Calcium reactor to fit in my stand and finish the doors

How many microns is that pre-filter sock you are using? In my tank I have a 200 micron but I find that it plugs up very quickly. But the water is sure clear when the bag is fresh. How do you clean it? I let mine dry out and then take a vacuum to it but I am sure there must be a better way.

Snoop Dog
12-17-2005, 08:37 PM
100 micron bag. I just spray it with the hose or masage it in the sink untill it is some what clean. then I throw it in the washing machine. With no soap.

All in all things went well today. The Dart has a funny noise and the input and output connections have small leaks Ill have to fix in the AM. Not sure about the Dart, well see if it breaks in and the noise stops, or if there is an issue with the pump. the actually motor of the pump is surprisingly quit, so Im not sure what the noise is?

All in all Im happy with the flow, there is a constant movment of mass water around everything, nothing is being sprayed at , and the top of the sand just slightly moves, but is not disturbed.

Ill be sure to post more as the tank progresses, after all the setup is only the beggining!!!

Very Nice Snoopy!, love cubes!, really like the stand too!, those micron bags, do they stop micro-bubbles or are they just for polishing the water and picking up crap from the return., never used one, just wondering.

Thanks

Snoop Dog
12-19-2005, 04:58 AM
The micron bags do a bit of both, but the main purpose is to polish the water, they realley collect alot of crap from your water.

I got the red buckets from my work. we have a few thousand of them :)

You have two overflow pipes; do they join together in a T underneath the tank and then into the sump - or do they individually plumb to the sump? Could you post some pictures of that when you get a chance?
