Bad Luck with Sea Hare

Has anyone had bad luck with a Sea Hare and had it wipe out their tank ? Just looking at getting one and hear lots of good and bad.

Had bad luck in the way that mine died after about 6 months. Didn't cause any problems though, when I tried to pull it out, it did ooze out some purple stuff, so I gravel vacuumed out all his ink first then pulled him out, no problems with him otherwise.

Keep in mind, mine was like a bulldozer and did NOT hardly eat any algae. Any good arsenal of snails does more for a tank. It will knock stuff over on you.

I think your thinking of cucumbers.. Some cukes can nuke your tank but I've had a sea hare die in my wifes tank before and never had any problems.. 1 suggestion I would make though it to see if your LFS will buy it back from you when your done because if they dont have any algea to eat then they will die.

if you run out of algea you can feed them nori. Wrap it around a rock etc.

I had one no problems.. I accidently sentenced him to death (powerhead intake) It didn't do anything to my tank.

It DID clean my tank like there's no tomorrow.... reef was spotless.

They are bulldozers, but just super glue your frags down... problem solved.

I've lost 2 in my tank, and I still had/have TONS of algae! The first one...we knew absolutely NOTHING and had very little algae...died in tank and caused no issues...but MAN do they stink when you pull them out, the second one we are still unsure of what happened....maybe just a bad Hare? Both times neither did any damage to any of the inhabitants! I just found they aren't very easy to keep....if I could keep one alive I would likely have a LOT less algae.

I tried two of them at seperate times. I did not ever see either one after the second day, no bodys, no sign of them? Not enough time to even see it eat anything. Hit or miss it sounds like, nothing bad happened to my water quality that I could tell, but I have large water volume.

I just got one yesterday and I can tell you this, after 20 seconds in the tank, he was on hair-algea-feast mode!!! I woke up this morning and he was still eating with the lights being out!

I should mention though that I acclamatized him over 4 hours and that seemed to work for me.

I've had three die, and I only found one. No ill effects to the tank. Maybe longer acclimation is the answer. None of them lasted over two weeks.
