View Full Version : A new powerhead - watch the video.

This is a very cool video of a new powerhead being done by Ecotech Marine (http://www.ecotechmarine.com), courtesy of Marc at Melevsreef.com (http://www.melevsreef.com) who apparently spent some time geeking out at this years MACNA. The motor is on the outside of the glass (no heat, no in-tank wires), and drives the impeller through the glass. Very sweet, and about 3100gph (as shown). The one on the right just has the cowling taken off for display purposes.
More photos at Marc's photo-journal (http://www.sparklingfloorservice.com/melevsreef/pics/macna17/cool_stuff.html). Down to the bottom of this page.
Enjoy, and drool.

I was just checking that out the other day. Pretty darn cool  Its flow is adjustable (like the more expensive Tunzes) and it has a battery backup built in so it keeps working for 24-36h during a poweroutage is pretty sweet too!

But, what if it fails?
So let me get this straight. Do you have to drill your tank for this to work? That would be perfect for behind rock work too.

Nope.
The VorTech minimizes the intrusion of equipment in your tank by using a patent pending bracketless design; this allows the motor to be on the outside of the aquarium and uses a magnetic field to transfer torque through the aquarium wall to the propeller located in the water.
If only there was an emoticon for drooling.

Ok, wow
I just assumed a guy would have to drill the tank as well, definitely worth looking into!

Too bad the powerhead would have to stay still in order to work... imagine putting that thing on a track and have it go back and forth in the rear of the tank
Still a pretty sweet idea though

i think that's pretty rad... can't wait til they are out on the market.

Hi All,
Judging by the video it looks like there is no drilling of the tank. Looks like it uses magnets to hold it in place. Neat idea. ave to watch for this one!

Time to save up your $$ people. I can foresee a lot of used Seios, Maxi-Jets, Tunzes, etc. coming on sale in the next year if this powerhead is proven reliable & delivers everything it seems to be promising.
Invigor, love the "drooling" emoticon
I think I'm going to need 2 of these new PHs
