Ok final plans (I think images/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif ) after a couple days of thought and a few ideas I came up with this for a stand..
http://members.shaw.ca/stircrazy/standcovered.jpg

I am going to use it to devide my front room off from the front entry, so the short side will be against the wall and the main tank will be viewable from 3 sides.

Very interesting. There was someone with a very similiar design about six months ago. I'll try to remember who it was as it would be interesting to see how his/her project came along.

The stand was Flame Angel on Reef Central.

StirCrazy,

With so many tanks aren’t you worried about hoses slipping and pumping copious amount of water through out your house?

I really like the design and I have been working on a bigger tank design for my house in 2 years but I am worried about hoses and connectors. I prefer not to have basement swimming pool.

Thanks
Patrick

Hi,

Hoses slipping...use stainless hose clamps images/smiles/icon_smile.gif

well I plan on using as little hose as I can. I am going to hard plum as much as I can.. and anywhere there there is a hose will have a hose clamp. there are so many tanks as I want a sump, a quarenteen tank, and a refuge. oh and also I forgot to draw the top off water tank on the top level images/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif

Use Quick disconnect unions..

And I'd go as much hose as you can.. Too much hard stuff can lead to a lot of work if something breaks or needs to be moved..

as well with hoses you get less vibrations being passed through everything.

hmm ok.. what kinda hose Darren?

Steve, use the braided type clear plastic hose. They have it at HD. I use it all over my system, from 1/2" up to 1 1/4". I think I got some for a better price at Coast Industrial on Dupplin Rd. same stuff tho. images/smiles/icon_wink.gif

ok so should I just use 2 x 1" bulkheads then? is that enuf for a 90 gal tank?
I am asking cuz if you can only get that flex like up to 1 1/4 then 1 1/2 is to big...

I used a 1" bulkhead on the overflow for my 15g but I don't know how much they can actually flow. Might want to go bigger, maybe 1 1/2 or more. If you are using two tho, maybe if both were 1 1/4 or 1 1/2 that would be fine... anyone else?

They have 1 1/2" at HD, got some when I was building my system. But I had piped averything in the end. And liek Darren said, you will have vibrations transmitted to everything. I will now be breaking into my straight sections and installing hose to reduce vibrations.

this amounts to a fairly heavy system over a small footprint. is it going to be on a basement or main level slab or is it on the second level or apptment? shane

well it has started. I did have to modify it a little.. I basicly made it 4.5' long and 25" wide and took off the top level. I will figure out a different way to mount the refuge.

the two main frames also have a cross brace which wasen't in yet when I took the pics.

Shane, sorry for the long time befor a reply I was in edmonton and coulden't log in, but ya my house has no basement and I am on a concreat slab so weight is not a concern.

well thinks are starting to happen, I ordered my 90 gal tank (36l x 25w x 24h) yesterday and bought a titanium heater. today I finnished welding my stand and bought the paint for it. (start painting tomorrow) I also bought 280lbs of dolomite for my sand bed, another 3 bulb ballast so I can over drive my actinics, and the last set of water proof endcaps I need. I am going to snap a couple more pics tomorrow of the stand as it sits so far.

Hey Steve,

what ballasts are you gonna use to overdrive your actinics? Are you using 3 lamps? VHO lamps or NO lamps?

I want to run 3 VHO or overdriven 36" actinic on my tank.

Thanks,
oh ya, what kind of endcaps are you using? images/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif

I am over driving three 36" philips actinic/03 bulbs

I bought the coralife encaps (24.00 a pair)
they have something like a 8 foot cord atached to them also and hangers.

Thanks Steve,

I looked back to your overdriving lights thread and saw that you are using GE electronic rapid start ballasts. Would the workhorse ballasts be any better or no difference?

any opinions?

StirCrazy

well I am thinking the workhorse might overdrive NO bulbs like a ice cap but I am not sure.. I might go tomorrow after lunch and check them out..

Ok due to a earthquake I had to cut my stand apart and rebuild it images/smiles/icon_rolleyes.gif
after I finnished painting it I noticed it didn't look right and when i checked it the top was out from the bottom by more than 1.5" images/smiles/icon_sad.gif so after several bad words images/smiles/icon_eek.gif and hours of fighting with a grinder images/smiles/icon_mad.gif it was all apart and I rebuilt it using new legs. so now it looks like the pictures again images/smiles/icon_razz.gif

well its been a while and a lot of painting but I finaly have the frame all done. it is 3 coats of spar polyurathaine on the inside and 3 coats of water based polyurathaine on the outside. so now I have to try to get the tank back in the stand (anyone feal like doing somelifting images/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif ) and start hanging all the doors.
