For a 36" tank, you'll need 2 MH or you'll get shadowing on the edges of the tank. 250W are probably the most versatile of the MH lamps and will work nicely for you.

Jesse i have to disagree wtih you on the MH spread. I have a 250 w pfo on my 36" tank and i have no shadowing. I'm running 10K bulb on my tank now..

THat would work, you'll just have to mount the light up higher. If you want a 250W pendant, I know someone who has one for sale...don't know the price though.
