sps feeding

hey guys...

i feed the tank phytoplankton about 2 times a week, just wondering if that is enough for all my corals.

i have two Acro colonies, various frags, plus frogspawns, zoos...

I am not sure how often to dose phyto, but another thing you could use is that cyclopeeze you cant seem to find anywhere lol...

ya they dont have cyclop-eeze at petland, petsmart, big al's.. and those are the only stores close to me. pain in the ass haha

Well there is a lot of debate over issue i guess. There are those who don't feed their SPS because they don't feel the need to, or they are concerned that they may overfeed their tank. The added "pollution" wouldn't be so great for the SPS that like nothing but the best water conditions.

On the other hand there are those who have tried it, and will swear by its benefits. They may have a system with a pretty serious skimmer. They are usually worried that it is removing a lot of potential food and decide to supplement with something like DT's.

I think its totally up to you and what your system is like. It doesn't hurt to try it out and see what the results are.

thanks lots of info. i think my sps should have lots of food as my refugium is doing awesome, my pod population is huge, it really skyrocketed, and from some of those article it sounds like alot of sps food grows in the refugium, zooplankton for example.

since using phytoplankton i've seen a huge growth spurt of feather dusters and pods.

phyto will spur the production of pods, whos larvae will feed the corals. To directly feed sps, try cyclop-eeze, rotifers or baby brine (newly hatched)

Light, and lots of it.

I went through the feeding thing for two years, theory was phyto fed the other critters and they fed the corals. now after a year with out feeding the corals but giving them lots of light , they have never looked better. from reading I have decided that SPS get 98%+ of there food from the light and algae inside the coral, the remander they adsorb from the water colume. now my LPS I do feed once a month and they get either BBS or frozen plankton.

You can try DT's oyster eggs, but phyto is not needed for SPS.

weird, what i just read it said they get 60-70% from light. but, if you have em doin good after year, you're doing something right.

well the phyto sure has helped, its so interesting just to watch the thousands of pods in my tank.... this is actually the first time i've had a tank running for more than 2months..... its kinda cool to see the the coraline, pods and such develop.

well i'm going to get some cyclop-eeze soon. what exactly are rotifers?
