natural sea water is arouind 1.025 and the red sea is hangin around 1.027
its up to you in the long run more salt higher salinity less salt less .

Usually around 1.025 -.026 for me.

I aim for 1.026. Used to run at 1.021 when it was only a marine tank to save on salt but after converting toa reef its best around 1.025-1.027.

1.026 when I check..

1.025 I feel it gives me a small margin because I don't have auto topoff.

What sort of differences would be visible if a guy or gal changed from say 1.023 to 1.025? other than buying more salt !

Less green perhaps

Up until a few days ago I've had mine at 1.022 but I've since raised it to 1.024 or 1.025. I've noticed that my SPS hasn't been extended as much and I think that might be why.

i used to keep it around 1.023. now i keep mine at around 1.026. i found that my corals look better when my salinty is higher.

There are quite a few running at 1.025!
I may have to start slowly increasing mine!

I keep both my tanks around 1.025 - 1.026.

I keep mine at 1.0125 everything seems to like it their...Thought I would post this thread so that when new people come to the hobbie they can see what everyone tends to keep their tank at!!!

i would assume it's a typo.

To maintain proper Ca/alk values (and Mg), close to natural seawater levels should be maintained. This is more important for reefs than FO tanks. Seawater is generally 1.026

I shoot for 1.026 like Brad

1.022.

that what mine is at, but i am fighting evaporation...i think I will raise mine to 1.025

How is that going to help your evaporation rate..??

That is somewhat puzzling as to what you're refering to.

I have been keeping mine steady at 1.025 for the past few months... might try 1.026, but if I let too much evaporation happen then my salinity gets too high, so I am keeping it safe at 1.025.

*ps* my corals seem to like the higher salinity too, as oppossed to 1.022, 1.023, etc...

is there someway to vote here or is this it and someone uspdated the count?? anyhow i like to keep my reef tank at 1.024 now does anyone know what the diff is if it's higher or lower??

You have to be logged on to vote, (but obviously you were cuz you made a post). The "ballot box" is at the top of the thread. Just click on the dot that represents your choice.

Hey, wait a minute. I see what you mean. Voting looks to be closed. I already voted, so maybe that's why I see it as closed? So I couldn't vote twice? (Like I would really want to! )

You can only vote once. After that it just shows the votes.

it just shows the results...there seems to be no way to vote cause i haven't voted, yet it is still closed to me.

Hey Edmontonians,

Have ya noticed that LFS's here (AI & BA's) have their salinity quite high.

The reason I know is when I have purchased livestock (inverts, corals, or fish) I test my bag water before acclimating the species. The LFS's have all been ranging 1.030. + ! I wonder why that is?

I keep my salinity at 1.024-1.025, so I find acclimating takes longer for me, which is a pain.

I think anything above 1.026 is not a good idea because saltwater holds less dissolved oxygen (DO) than fw & the higher the salinity, the lower the DO. My Fowlr's usually at 1.024 & the reef at 1.025-26.

whoops dont know what i was thinking... salt would go up with more evaporation right? i was thinking the opposite..

duhhh brain fart, sorry.

Forgive me if I seem picky, cuz I think ya get it, but...the salt wouldn't go up...the ratio of salt to water would.

yup exactly, ratio would change to less water to salt, therefore salinity is higher :)
