He's probably taken them off his site to put new stuff on. You'll note his original post was April 2002.

There you go. Magically reappears.

This coral has been one of the easier corals to keep for me. I move it around all the time to different areas in the tank and that doesn't seem to bother it too much. Quite fine at the bottom of the tank under PCs for about a year so far.

Can you frag a leather coral

The pest George

Nope sorry. :) It hasn't been a fast grower in my tank (maybe because I move it around so much and lighting is low). Also, I've heard that they don't frag well although it has been done. Wendell has fragged his a couple of times and I think he might agree that they aren't easy to frag and don't recover very fast either.

A thread on fragging yellow leathers with mixed success:

What is the latin name of this coral. If you happen to know Sam W.

Thanks George

George, its a Sarcophyton elegans.

They Do frag quite easily actually,

But they will do best by only taking clippings (min 1"x1" )from the outer edge and not cutting up like a pizza as some suggest.

Ive been able to cut a ring around the entire cap and then cut those into individual frags and still keep my mother a good size.

This is also more aesthetically pleasing,as you dont lose a nice show piece and have to wait for another to re-grow.

I have been able to frag many species multiple times of Sarco`s with no losses at all.
So frag away ! As long as your brood stock is healthy, and your frags will do better if placed back in the same system.

In a small system i couldnt recommend doing alot of cuttings in one session, as it will slime alot at first, and this will **** off a few other corals.
Ive cut atleast 30 in one session in a 108g with little trouble if thats any indication.

Sarco cuttings are a little difficult to attach reliably (2-3 weeks) as compared to other softies, but if they are pinned or tied to rubble in decent current they will do well.

The polyps will start to come out again in a week or so after cutting.

Smart idea Marc, I never thought about cutting a ring. That would look much better than hacking off chunks here and there. Thanks for the info!
