Can someone tell me how bidding works on ebay? I was bidding on a item, the bid increment was $10. My final bid was $450, someone at the last second bid $450.11. How can someone bid $0.11 if the increments are $10?

I dont know the details of Ebay but I have had many similar things happen.
I wanted one item, I knew the auction would end an hour after I got home from work. Just before I left for work, there was 10hrs remaining, with travel time, 8hr work day, I should have had enough time to watch the last half hour. Come home to find the auction ended 2hrs earlier and some dork bid $0.10 over me in the final minute.
What where you bidding on? Maybe the seller chose not to sell to you, I think they can do that?
Message the seller and ask him/her whats the deal.

I would guess that someone made $450.11 their top bid maybe earlier today or well before the auction closed anyway, perhaps when the auction first started. Its a technique used to get an edge over other bidders since most people bid in dollar increments. It certainly worked for that guy.
Christy :)
Do you have a link to the auction? Usually, you can't outbid someone by .11 when increments are $10 unless they bid first and your bid simply revealed their max bid.
EDIT: Yeah, what Christy said.

i find ebay ok if you really want somthing badly. but most of the time get out bid by those chicken hawks that wait till about 40 sec then bid so you dont have time to bid again.

You bas&ard....that was you....I was hitting the keys and came in at 9 seconds....
You all know that for a tiny fee, there are sites that'll snipe for you so you can spend your time doing something more productive like sleeping or feeding your fish.

Hmm, I had the top bid several times, the starting bid increments were $1. oh well, I wrote the seller asking him how that works... see what he says. I guess that why I usually use "Buy it now". To be honest, I don't think I've ever won a auction...

Well for me, half the fun is just bidding on the item, not necessarily winning it

there is a link just above winning bidder called "history". click on that and it will show you who bid what on the item after the auction was closed.

I'm a final minute bidder. I bid at the last minute the maximum I want to spend and hope for the best and that people dont drive the total up by trying to beat me.IF you bid in the last minute you can posibly keep the price down.
Willow

yeah that’s the key, not driving up to much interest on a item from the start. i also keep multiple browser windows open qued up with bids ready to go, just have to hit submit when it's crunch time.

It was one of those closed auctions where you could not see who is bidding.

Just got a e-mail offering a second chance
Walter
Congrats on the second chance offer. The reason that he beat you by .11 is because earlier on in the auction he set his max bid at 450.11 (probably counting on the fact that a competitor would only go to 450). When the auction ended and his bid was higher than yours, how much higher? .11. So that's how much he was expected to pay.

But, he could not have done that earlier in the auction. I had the highest bid up until the last 10-20 minuts or so... I guess my question is still, how can you have a penny bid when the increments are $10? Does ebay allow you to do this aslong as you bid the minimum $10? Not that it really matters, I'm just curious now.. maybe I could win using this!

The minimum increment is $10. You can bid $10.11 if you want. You can bid $12.46 if you want. As long as its ten bucks more than the last bidder.

just an fyi, if you buy something privately out of auction.. ie he tells you his high bidder jammed and he will sell to you for x.. then your auction falls outside of ebays jurisdiction, meaning you have no recourse if he never ships the item and rips you off. you can also not offer any feedback or likewise.

btw there is the transaction on your item.

Hey Walter,
Don't know how hot a deal that price is on the camera, but I just got my camera today from Cameta Cameras (huge ebay seller.. their feedback went from 86000 to 92000 in the time it took my camera to ship and arrive) and had great luck with them. No duty at all (just GST/PST) and I figure I saved at least a grand on the camera and accessories.
http://www.cameta.com/
The average selling price for the Nikon I was bidding on was around 925 bucks, but I wanted to cap myself at around 900.. Just kept bidding 900 on every one that popped up (they do about 10 a day for the package) and lucked out one Sunday morning at 850!

To be honest I knew it was not a great deal. I think I bid higher just because I was mad  I found the same camera for $419 online in Canada and $15 for shipping... I think I'll order from them unless I find a even better deal.
I've capped myself at $500 for this purchase.

Increments are used when maximum bids have not been reached yet. Let's say bidding starts at $250. At $250, the increments are $5. Let's say your max bid was $400. Well, the current bid would then be $250 (your bid is the first bid).
Now, let's say John also wants the camera. His minimum bid would have to be $255 (EBAY will not let him bid a lessor amount such as $250.11 because the increment is $5). So let's say John places his maximum bid at $255 (which happens to be the minimum that EBAY allows). But you already have a bid of $255 so the highest bid now is $255 for you.
Now Jane comes along and also wants that camera and she puts in a maximum bid of $401.16. Well, $401.16 beats your 400 so she gets it for $401.16.
Its a little confusing but the increments are used only when the maximum bids of a bidder has not been reached yet. Once the maximum bid has been reached, you can beat the bid by 1 penny and win.
So hopefully, this example shows when the increment is used and when it is not used. You can read more in the link below:
http://pages.ebay.ca/help/buy/bid-increments.html
In your auction, had your maximum bid have been $450.11, you would have won by a penny even though the increment was $5 (according to Ebay's chart).
