I had a copper band butterfly that ate aptasia, but I would usually boil them because its more fun for me.

got a pepermint shrimp as I had about 100 aptasia. It took a week to get him started but he cleaned the tank out in about 4 days

I had 2 peppermint shrimp, now I'm down to one. Neither of them seems to care for the 2 aptasia in my tank. I've read so much about peppermint shrimp and everything is saying it's completly hit or miss.

How do you distinguish which peppermint is the real macoy? This maybe my problem in the past, not obtaining the right specie. Maybe you have a few pointers to how I can identify the right one for the job. what should I look for in terms of appearance wise.

I know which specie to obtain, just don't know how to differentiate them apart without having them both of the readily availble in the pet store.

I had the same result as DanG, my 2 pepermint shrimp didn't take a liking to my aptasia. I saw a thread somewhere that people were using the water they use to rinse/defrost their frozen food (mysis or brine shrimp) and mix Kalk in it after they pour it off. The aptasia sence a feeding and suck the kalk soaked water up and quickly melt away. Other than that I use a mix of boiling saturated Kalk to blast em....but am thinking about trying this new method!

Injection is nice if you can get access to each individual polyps, but in a highly stocked tank it's nearly impossible without rearranging the entire tank.

"PEPE" ( girlfriend does most of the naming  ) the peppermint shrimp took out 50+ in less than a week...
I think their rostum (sp.) or nose is the way to distinguish a pepper vs non pepper real peppermint shrimp have a shorter rostum than the fakers... not much help unless you have them side by side though.
Hope this helps.
