Do they look like Darren's ... but its brown instead of purple ? And...what type lighting (type and position in the tank) is the parent colony in ?

yeah, but much thinner branched. its ~20" under 400W 6500k MH on the sand bed. and off to the side, in the outer region of the MH light spread.

I could be wrong, but here is a pic of a brown monti I got from Shao, hopefully he will chime in if it is not the same kind.
