Hey Guys.........

The new 120 is here and I thought I would share.....

Tank, Stand and sump
http://www.canreef.com/photopost/data/500/1059Img2005_04_0901.JPG

This 48x24x24 will have 2 Mak 4's running the show. One for the sump, That will enter the tank via two 3/4 Sea Swirls and one will be a closed loop with a Super Squirt. You can see 2 drains in the back for the closed loop. Each of the 3 strainers drain into 2 lines then to one pump this will cut down on the velocity of the water being sucked. 4 returns for this 2 centre at the back and 2 in the rocks. The ones in the rocks will be split with Loc Line. A 36gal sump with 2 100 micron bags. Why 2???? The flow will be split into 2 bags for ease of change. I figer one will have to be changed often but 2, 1/2 the time.

There is a Stockman pipe(Aquasilencer) in the over flow I take it out for a laugh it looks just like an Austin Powers ***** pump.....
You should have seen the neighbors faces......

CHANGES.......

Finer sand
Use this rock as a base change to Figi or Tonga I think

Fish........right now its a grave yard........I have blamed it on the canister
hence the change.......not cutting it to much work to keep up to it....

Looks great. Can't wait to see it in action.

There is an eerie ghost in the tank, though, who looks as if he's trying to take your picture. I hope you're OK with that  (seems like a reasonably benign ghost .. perhaps a former paparazzi)

YUP....... Gets it right up out of your way when working on the tank....

It's a little tricky though, Those hindges only come in 14" door is 20" JUST sits up there. I think I have to add a little weight to the top end. I little bug I have to work out yet.

medican
04-19-2005, 10:54 PM
So heres how I fixed the bug........

I took an old pry bar that I got from my Grandfather many many years ago......flatened it out and routered a space for it at the top of the door on the inside.........works great .......and a piece of history inbeded in the tank stand to boot........Kinda cool

Hello All.......

I have a new found respect for people that choose to put in a new tank. The work involved is incredible.

So lets get to the tank:

Here is the backing I have gone with. It's vinyl with clear mac-tac. I had 4 hands helping it went well and with about one hour of working out the bubbles it was smooth as glass. If this is the look your after, I highly recommend it....

Richard, nice job. What are the three way intakes for? Or why are there strainers on the returns?

medican
05-06-2005, 04:43 PM
Hey Troy......

Yes....there intakes for the closed loop. 3 strainers to 2 1in lines that Y into a Mak-4. I split it up this way to cut down on the sucking power in the tank.

medican
05-08-2005, 03:03 PM
Well.......

As you can see, it's in place.....the move went well

Well...

Here are the moon lights.....
These are LED 14 of them (4000mcd, 470 nanometer) each have a lens over them spreading light about 180 degrees.

http://www.canreef.com/photopost/data/500/1059Img2005_05_2501.JPG

I have mounted them on 1" aluminum tube

http://www.canreef.com/photopost/data/500/1059Img2005_05_2502-med.JPG
http://www.canreef.com/photopost/data/500/1059Img2005_05_2601-med.JPG

They are all hooked up to a Lunar Tracker witch puts them on a 29 day cycle
http://www.canreef.com/photopost/data/500/1059lunar_tracker.jpg

I'll try to get a good pic of the tank at its brightest.......

Cheers

What does the lunar tracker do, adjust moonrise and moonset times? Or does it also adjust intensity? Where did you pick it up from? Looks pretty keen.

Hi Medican ,Been following your thread and the setup looks great , lot of effort which seems to be coming together.Beautiful tank ........
I may be talking through my hat and in no way do I want to rain on your parade but I noticed in a recent posting where you showed your moonlight array (wow ! ), that you had mounted them on alumimum. I am one of the older members getting back into marines after a good many years but do recall a marine importer in the U.K. who initially used aluminum framed tanks and lost a whole room of livestock.................
Obviously the frames would easily allow contamination and your lights are not in contact with the salt water but please ensure you have no drips happening as I believe aluminun can be highly toxic.

Looking forward to more photo's and details of your progress.
.................Dave.

Thanks Dave.....

Good to know...I have sprayed them with a marine boat paint, about 5 coats, but I will watch them close just the same....

But at the same time ..... dont want to take ANY chances....
I think I will start looking at a new mounting system....

Thanks for the heads up.....

take them and get them powder coated, it will cost about 25 bucks and it is impervious to the stuff we will throw at it. (remove all the stuff then take just the rails in)

RO/DI Storage and mixing:
Here is what I use, minus the Mag 2 that sits in the middle for filling mix tank, buckets and circulating

http://www.canreef.com/photopost/data/500/1059Img2005_06_1301-med.JPG

Fresh on the left, you can see the float switch and it is all run by a timer so the ro/di unit will run about 1 min every hour through the night till full then the float over rides everything
http://www.canreef.com/photopost/data/500/1059Img2005_06_1303-med.JPG

And mixed on the right, able to mix with a Mag 2 and a heater holder near the upper output.
