I have a 24 inch 2x65 watt PC fixture. Can I put 36 inch bulbs on it as long as they are also 65 watts?

Yup. Just don't exceed the rated watts for the ballast and you can do whatever you want.

... why do they make 65W 24" and 65W 36" bulbs?

Its a Coralife fixture so they make them for various sized tanks.

there still going to be a 24" bulb, a 36 inch PC bulb is 96 watts.

if they are saying thew 36" fixture is using two 65 watt bulbs what they have done is staggered the bulbs to cover 36" instead of 24" so it is still only two 24" 65 watt bulbs.

I believe PC bulbs are "bent" T5s so that a 4' 65w T5 is now a 2' 65w PC & a 6' 96w T5 is now a 3' 96w PC.

The only 2' PCs I've seen are 55w & 65w.

Steve, you were right about the 36 inch bulbs. From the J&L site I could see only 24 and 30 inch setups that were 65 watts. The 30 inch probly just uses a different reflector.

My new tank is 36 inches long so I guess I have some decisions to make.

96w bulb is the 96w powerquad - it's only 18" long - not 36.

and that is a non standard PC, it is 4 tubes wide instead of two, so it is basicly a 36" PC cut in 1/2 and glued back togeather
