I have heard (though not experienced) that tube worm feather dusters will sometimes move out of their tube and plant themselves somewhere else and begin making a new tube. Someone else should confirm this info though.
Was it floating around or on the bottom? What did it look like?

Feather dusters are able to shed there feathery heads and later regenerate them later. I had this happen to one of mine. I looked inside his tube one morning and nothing it was empty. The tube began to break down and was about to take it out, but decided to see if it would come back. Sure enought like 2 weeks later a new feathery head was there. So I would wait a while before you toss it in the garbage

the remains of the feather duster was caught on a piece of rock. he looked like an earth worm, about 3 inches long, except that he had a row of feet on one side of him and then you could tell where the duster was attached.
