im setting up a 120gal and i ordered all the pumps and thinking back now im a tad worried im going to be blasting my fish out of the tank.
DAN Mag-Drive 1800 gph water pump(closed loop)
DAN Mag-Drive 500 gph Water Pump(return pump)
i have seen on websites how guys have drilled the bottoms of their tanks and had all the return lines from the closed loop hidden under rock and this is what i have planned. im going to have 16 jets shooting water off of the 1800 gal/hr pump. please any input would be nice. the equipent arives middle of next week.

I don't think its too much flow for your fish. On my 50G, I have a Sequence Dart running (3600GPH) on a closed loop and a very small return pump pumping about 150 - 200GPH. My fish aren't even phased by it. Also, as long as you don't put coral in a direct blasting path of the water, it should be ok.

16 jets!!
I hope you aren't planning on making the bottom of your tank into swiss cheese..!?

I think he'll most like have only 2 or 3 holes in the bottom with spraybars or locline or something like that and the rest over the edge of the tank? Anyway, when drilling through the bottom for returns, be careful where you drill or else this might happen:

after friction loss in your plumbing, a MAG 18 won't even feel like it's moving water out of 16 jets. I run mine out of 2 outlets, and they're almost nothing. Unless you're jets are 1/4" or smaller, you won't see much flow at all.
And in a 120, you could easily double the flow.

in my 140 i run a dolphin 3000 that gives 3600 gph for closed loop and my return the flows around 400gph. I think you might be undercutting if anything by deviding the mag 18 up 16 times. I could be wrong tho.

I have a 90g setup right now...

I have a 3000 gph pump on a closed loop. A 1200 gph mak4 sump return. Two Tunze 6110 kits pushing between 600gph - 3000gph each (they pulse).

I feel the need for more flow. I still have a corner that has a dead spot...

My fish love it. Acro's too :)

My 90 has a Mag 12 return (split so a bit goes to the refugium), Mag 18 on a closed loop (spraybar on the bottom), two 802 powerheads (behind the rock) and two Tunze 6100's (one at at each end)...lots of flow but the fish seem to like it, purposely swimming in front of the Tunzes and going for a ride...

my 90 has a seio 1500 and a t4 (dialed down to 700 gph) return and the sand dosent like it but my kole tang sure does. i think if anything by the time you plumb everything you might be coming up short.

As an example of flow, my new 75 will have a MAK 4 returned via 1" sea-swirl, a Tunze stream 6100 and a stream 6080. And maybe a MAG 12 if I can figure out where to run it.
Now this may be too much for some softies and LPS, but the fish will love it.

well the way i want to have it set up is to have the mag suck from the overflow and pump into the bottom of the tank through 4 holes. each hole will be tee'd off and there will be 4 lock lines per hole. i was thinking that this would be a massive ammount of flow, but from what you guys are saying i think i may drill a spare bulkhead in the overflow compartment and make my plumbing flexible to the option of another mag.

Richard

thanks for the speedy replys

You might just want to try going with a bigger pump.

In my 100g, I have a Tunze Stream 6060 (1600 gph), an Eheim Pro II (200 gph), a Rio 1400 (400 gph), a AC 300 (300 gph), and a Mag 5 (250 gph after head loss). That should be a rated 2700 gph and my fish love surfing in front of the new tunze. Of course, I only have a few hardy softies in there & nothing that's in direct flow of a PH or filter outflow.

Compared to the ocean currents & tides, what we provide in our tanks is nothing.

Hey Richard, what ever you decide to do as far as the pump is concerned I don't think you should drill into the bottom of the tank. Better to have a couple of unsightly hoses over top then to end up like the picture above.

i cant go with a bigger pump now its already in route from mops.ca

i dont see why i would have to worry about my tank cracking if i build the stand properly level and have a peice of half inch foam under the tank. im not doing the drilling myself the guys at the glass guild convinced me of that, so im probably going to have them just do it for me.

if you could provide a good reason not to drill the tank i would deffinately go another route, but i think its safe (until otherwise convinced) and looks better.
