The crap people are willing to pay for Acanthastrea... To me, it's just overglorified Blastamusa.

I'd want one, but only if someone other then me is buying!

Whats so hot about this anyways? I looks like a painted snail shell that has been embedded in rock!

It because it is the "it" coral for now and is relatively rare in collection I believe.

Is it the "it" coral now like Micheal Jackson was in the 80s/90s? Is it some fad that will just fad away later?

Well, just like many other things in life there are fads that come and go. When I was first starting the hobby everyone wanted RBTA's and paid hundreds and hundreds of dollars for them. Then there were the SPS like Efflos and Torts that everyone wanted and paid hundred and hundreds of dollars for. Now its these Ancastreas. Now, I'm not saying that I don't want a piece of each of those, but I do think that prices will go down eventually once people start fragging them and having more success with them, etc.

There's actually a very funny article in this months Reef Keeping Magazine by Anthony Calfo about fads in aquaria.

Must go read this article.

So do you think that most people want them for the sake of being able to say they have them, or do you think they actually truely want them in that unselfish way that seems to make men happily empty out their wallets?

I think that many reef keepers continually keep their eye open for that one coral that is truly unique and rare. Something that noone else (or hardly anyone else) has. I think it is partially the bragging rights but also a sense of satisfaction that you have acquired a coral that everyone seems to want. Gotta be the first on their block...

Then again some people may just have more money than brains and just really like the colour of it...

Eheheh!

I mean as in the own personal "I like this just because I like this not because someone told me to like it".

They are just like cars. Expensive at first but over the years they come down. There is some people on another forum that has a tank with only those corals. 10 different colours and he fraggs them for us the hobbist. Sure they are still expensive but his frags aint 12 hundred dollars.
