I was told the other day that Banded Coral shrimp have been known to kill fish when the shrimp reach larger sizes, say a 3 inch body. Can anyone else confirm this. I put a pair of fire fish in my tank a couple of nights ago and something killed them. I'm trying to figure out if it was my copper band butterfly (doubtful as he has been sick and lathargic for a couple days) or my clowns or the shrimp? Tank parameters are good.

Maybe the firefish killed each other  I tried two purple Firefish once, and found they did not last long. I then got a single one that does just fine.

All I know is that my RBTA ended up with a nice snack.

You might try frozen krill for the RBTA, it is a lot less expensive. :BIG:

I was just reading up on fire fish. They do like to be in groups which is why I bought 2.
The banded coral shrimp are supposed to be cleaners. I've never seen mine try to clean anything though.

I'm stumped.

Agreed, two is not a group. Two is a couple. It is not even several. a group in fish circles means six or more.

Well, I'll get rid of it when I move. I won't take anymore chances.

Curious has anyone had these banded coral shrimp with any other shrimp like a peppermint or a cleaner shrimp O.K? Or will they kill all other shrimps?

I was told not to mix banded coral shrimps with others by a number of LFS. I haven't tried it personally brcause I believe that they would kill othe types of shrimp.

I believe guysmiley has a coral banded with a couple cleaners, a couple peppermints and maybe even a blood shrimp as well. I haven't heard of any problems. I would ask him his take on it though.

Yeah I was also told by most fish stores that Coral banded shrimp are bad to add with other shrimps.

Although I have read that you can house with other shrimps if it is a larger tank & has alot of live rock. So I was wondering if any one has tried this theory and what the outcome was or is?

I will ask Guysmiley...thanks

It probably helps if the coral banded is smaller than the other shrimp as well.

My CBS seems to behave.
He lives with a skunk cleaner.
I think CBS are actually a cleaner shrimp and I caught him cleaning my sailfin tang once.

He does do a lot of posturing when my hand is near him, or if a fish gets in close.

I don't think he has killed any fish, but I am sure he had snacked on some dead/dying ones.
