View Full Version : Open Water (The movie)
Did anyone else have the urge to rent this movie about a couple that gets left out in ocean by a scuba tour group? It's suposedly based on a true story.
I rented it on the weekend!
This movie sucked IMO!
I want the 1-1/2 hours of my life back that I wasted on this bomb!

Well I will be the first here to say I really enjoyed it
I was left out 25miles at sea about three years ago off the coast of Cuba so I can relate I guess.
I can also see why most would say it sucked, but until your in a situation like this, it's just not the avarage day in the water.
I was told by my diving instructor that we would have to swim and I said there's no way I could swim 25miles, his reply "we wouldn't make it all the way but we would have a better chance of being picked up by a passing boat". From that moment on I thought I was done-fish food, also from that point on everything runs through one's mind and that's what they tried and did portray in the movie. While I was swimming in deep cool water every thought crossed my mind like: who's gonna feed my fish, who's gonna pay my car payments, who's fault was this, how could I be so stupid, etc.... That's why I liked this movie, not because of it's lack of crazy stunts, spectacular special effects, or years of dramatic writting more for the fact that it told a story that is truly frightening when you put yourelf in "there fins". This is also a very low budget indie movie, not some big block buster from Warner Bros that cost millions to make.
If anyone is interested in reading about my event, let me know and I can paste it on here, it may help some of you realize that life is pretty precious.

i thought the movie was alright.
i thought it was pretty well done for what it was.
has definitely got me thinking twice about going scuba on my next tropical vacation.
Catwoman, now there's a guaranteed waste of time. trust me.
I was kind of into the movie even after realizing that it was a super low budget cheesey production (I noticed this in the opening moments) because it was after all based on a true story.
So after watching 1-1/2 hours and then seeing them both dead at the end I felt ripped off. :bad-word:
After all, how could it be a true story if they both end up as fish food?
Who told this true story? The sharks and gulls?
Sorry, but I'd like to boot the producer in the nad's!
And I'll never get my 1-1/2 hours back!
I'd love to read about your event Rich.

heh, well they did find that camera in the shark...
perhaps they had taken photos of them standed in open water with nothing else to be seen in the horizon... shots of them wading with shark fins circling them, or even underwater photo of them being surrounded by sharks?
anyhoo... based on fact or not, it is not a documentary, it is still just a movie.
for having a vague idea of what the movie was about, it was still OK for how it was done. (over a long period of time on a limited budget).
but yeah, dont watch this movie if youre looking for excitement or a blockbuster type movie.
hey, go watch "Napolean Dynamite". vote for PEDRO!! hahhahah. Gosh!

ND was genius - quite funny, with no swearing, sex, tired bodily function jokes or clichés all around. So many times during the movie they could have gone for a standard punch line but didn't... that's why it was good. Maybe not the most accessible - but that's what crap like White Chicks is for.

Ok, here's my little event that took place off the coast of Cuba three years ago, and why I can relate and enoy this movie.
A short entry about a day of snorkeling and diving while on vacation in Cuba that will change my life forever. Alan and I took off one sunny morning for a great day of diving and snorkeling, little did I know what this day would turn out to be. As we were heading out to open water a dive instructor/spear fishermen named Alex asked me if I would be interested in going spear fishing with him while part of the group did there first dive, he added that the first dive site would not be anything too special as it was a shallow wreck dFve. Alex also asked me how long I could stay self afloat in the water. I told him that I had no problem with staying in the water for at least 3-4 hours as Alan and I spent this much time in the water last year while snorkeling in Playa Del Carmen. After some lengthy heated discussions with his boss, Alex came to me and said that his boss had agreed to a short fishing trip for us, as this was not a normal tourist excursion. When I asked Alex my one concern as to how the boat would find us, he assured me that the GPS was onboard. I went back upstairs to the top deck of the boat to tell Alan and our two friends that I would be going spear fishing and he said go for it, because this is not something that you can do every day. About five minutes later I was enjoying some laughs when Alex came running up, he said “Rich quickly grab your gear because were hear and the captain say’s now or never”. I barley had time to grab my snorkel, mask, fins, and camera as I jumped off the back of the 28ft charter boat. By the time I had my fins and mask on, the boat was gone and I looked around to see nothing but water in three directions, and a tiny strip of land in the fourth view. This was when it hit really sank in, that I was nuts or that I really love the ocean. I wasn’t nervous about being dropped twenty five miles offshore, as the captain was very keen on being back to pick us up in just a short hour and a half. I was more worried that I might spear my foot or some other body part. The water was warm and clear to say that we were twenty five miles off shore, but we were also on a shelf that was about a mile in diameter and was only about fifteen to twenty feet depth. We began our fishing journey, Alex spearing giant lobsters twenty feet below, while I remained at the surface to watch and learn. After he had caught about half a dozen or so he came to me and said o.k. Rich it’s your turn now. Alex gave me some instruction on how to use the gun and also some tips for spearing lobsters. For my first few attempts I came up empty handed then on my third plunge I managed to land one, although it wasn’t easy trying to surface for air while dragging up a squealing lobster. I managed to catch four on this day (which I don’t mind boasting) was a good day for my first time out. Alex told me a short time later that we should stop fishing for lobster as the boat should be heading back for us and we still had to catch a few fish also. One hour and forty five minutes(15min late) had gone by in a very short time I said to Alex, trying to hint that a boat should be in sight soon. After he had caught a few fish Alex too had a concern about the boat being late. The captain said he would pick us up after one hour and thirty minutes, it was now two hours(30min late) that we were afloat and the boat was still not in sight. After another fifteen minutes or so(45min late) Alex told me something that I really did not want to hear. He said that we should start swimming for land as the boat or one of the divers may have run into some trouble. I then asked him how we were going to swim twenty five miles to shore. Alex said that even though we were that far out that we wouldn’t be able to swim that far, but instead swim ten miles or so towards land where we would have a better chance of being picked up by a passing boat. At this point I could not help the fact that my worst fears were becoming a reality and that I was also getting nervous as I could see an uncertain look in Alex’s face.
Alex then dove down to untie the buoy that had been used to keep our catch from floating away. He then came to me and said let’s take our time and make a slow but steady paddle towards land. He was very cool and calm and he did his best to keep me calm too. After about another fifteen minutes(1hr late) of steady swimming across what seemed to be a colder section of water we stopped and Alex told me to take a breather. I took these few minutes to un strap my cheap plastic disposable camera and take a few pictures of myself. I had this crazy thought that if I was to end up dead that at least I could do is provide my family and friends a few images of myself having a wonderful time before I was to parish. I took a few self portraits of myself trying to look like I was having “the time of my life”. After I finished the last of the film I took the camera and put the elastic star over my head and onto my neck as I thought just incase I loose a limb to a shark or something. Meanwhile Alex had dove underwater to strip the lobsters and simply keep the tails and the few fish attached to the buoy with chicken wire as he said the extra drag of the shellfish was slowing himself down. At this point I couldn’t help but think that he was crazy, not for being worried so much about the catch of the day but more so for keeping the bait. I suggested that he should just drop the seafood and cut our loses. Alex replied to say that if the boat picked us up that the captain would be ****ed if we didn’t have lunch for the group. Now as we began to swim again all I could think about was how crazy he was to be pulling fresh appetizers off the back of his leg for some shark who would just skip the finger food and go for the main course. We had covered about half a mile since we started to head for shore(1 ½hrs late) and Alex new this as we had left the shelf and we were now swimming in a deeper blue water that had a steady stream of cool current along with it. As I was swimming I started to have some pretty crazy thoughts like: who’s gonna pay my car payments, who’s gonna feed my fish, and how much trouble it would be for my family to move all my things out of my rented basement suite. Suddenly Alex stopped and yelled at me to start fanning the top of the water. So with my feet treading water and my arms cutting into the water it was quite the workout. Alex stopped fanning and then he told me to stop and as we looked around in three of four directions, we saw nothing- just deep blue water(1 3/4hrs late). I asked him why did we do that and he said he thought that he heard the boat but instead that it must have been a plane. As we continued swimming again I began to get more and more nervous as I saw through my mask under water that Alex would look at his watch every five minutes or so. The cool current wasn’t helping the slight shock that was starting to set in(2hrs late). As we were swimming he suddenly stopped and began to splash again, this time he was splashing very fast. As I joined in I thought to myself that there better be a damn boat this time because all this splashing was starting to take a toll on me. Alex then stopped and came over to me and said no worry’s Rich I hear the boat, I looked again out at the sea and saw nothing. Thinking that it might have been another f***ing plane I was now not only exhausted, tired, and scared, I was also a little angry at not seeing a damn boat(2 1/4hrs late). Then Alex pointed to something far off, he said there it is, that’s our beautiful boat. At this moment I have never felt so much relief and happiness in all my life. Alex and I then turned to each other and started to splash each other with happiness. When the boat pulled up to us, everyone was standing on the top deck looking down at us with a fearful smile. The last 15min while treading water and hoping that it was our boat was the longest 15min of my life. The second I climbed up the ladder the first thing I remember doing is kissing the hot plastic deck. Shortly after the boat had picked us up we were told that the boat ran into trouble and that’s why they were two and a half hours late. When they dropped us off to go to the first dive site there GPS went down, so in order to find the first shallow wreck the captain decided to drag another instructor by the back of the boat with a snorkel and mask in order to find the site. After 15-20min of searching and getting unsuited and then re-suited again the divers finally were able to drop. Then after the 45min dive the captain had troubles remembering which shallow shelf he had dropped myself and Alex onto. After he checked the wrong shelf first he then headed towards our general area. My friend Alan also told me that everyone was then ordered up to the top deck to help keep an eye out for us. He said that we were spotted about five miles away, and that our splashing created a bunch of reflections hitting the water. Later Alex told me that this splashing was the old school method of “drop and find” before GPS came into action. Even though I truly thought that I was in serious trouble I did continue to go snorkeling and diving an hour later at our second site, which amazed not only the rest of the group but also myself. Later Alan, Alex and myself ate a feast of lobster and were able to laugh a little and drink a lot. I learned a lot out in that sea that day, I also realized that old saying that life really is too short and that we must try to live it to it’s fullest.
Rich, I had to edit some of the language. -Tony
That's an amazing story Rich! I did get more out of your story than that movie.(Realy)
The movie probably has a good storyline, but it dragged out too long and the end result made the veiwer almost feel stupid for belliving that it might be a true story.
Thanks for sharing Rich!

Great story!
IMO I loved the movie. Specially the DTS track, pretty good sounds, makes it feel like you were in the ocean with them ;)
I made the mistake however of leaving the dvd out, and my mom watched it. I'm leaving for fiji in about 3 weeks time, and I'm primarly going for scuba diving, and now she doesn't want me to go. Sigh... mothers....

hey, where in fiji are you going?
Lol, honestly, i'm still not 100% sure which island yet. My mom works for a travel company (works from home now, does only group sales) and she got 2 free tickets. So my dad and her are going, and asked if I wanted to tag along. At first I didn't want to, but then I looked into diving, and changed my mind. We're actually going to N.Zealand for 1 week, then another week in Fiji. I'm gonna be taking a Padi course (http://www.subsurfancefiji.com) while i'm there (always wanted to, and figured it would be cool to take it in a different country). That way at least I'll be outa my parents hair, which will be cool since I work for my dad, and its hard to get away from the parents sometimes. They'll be going on a cruise for 3-4 days, which will leave me to do my own thing. Never really been off by myself, however I think I'll have a blast. All I know is whichever island I goto (hoping for Malolo) I'm gonna take a boat over to Beachcomber and party one night ;)

I thought open water was an excellent movie, it was made for under 200hundredthousand,must movies even low budget movies cost more than a million. Titanic cost 211 million to make! Oh well thats movies for you. As for napolean dynamite... lets not go there too painful to think about... god I can hear that organ music now.

Well just saw it tonight and I was a little dissapointed. They could have atleast had the bed/hotel scene a bit more extended
I did not like the poor picture quality one bit.
The story was a bit......non eventful....tough to make two people in the middle of the ocean exciting when sharks keep comming.......and comming.......and comming........and comming......Oh did I mention the sharks.
Not the worst movie I have seen latley but I would have felt ripped off if I was to see it in theater.
