Every year, at the summer solstice, thousands of dogs are tortured and eaten at the dog meat festival in Yulin, China. It started in 2010 and has no religious or ceremonial value. The dogs are beaten and then, boiled, burned amputated, skinned alive — crying out in agony as people cheer on the butchers. Then the poor creatures are fed to people all over the city.

Help end the dog meat trade.

I ask that the donation be made to SOI dog (https://www.soidog.org/en/sponsor-a-dog-or-cat/) instead of a handful of other charites because they are a not for profit, and have a Canadian Charity #. If you would pefer to make a donation a different charity thats fine as well but please make sure you know the money is going toward this cause

There are some online petitions if you'd like to show your support for the animals

It's mostly a request by some famous people asking for the torture to stop with a few graphic glimpses into the atrocities these dogs face. It's a tame video compared to some of the others and photos.

Thank you for the bid Scyathanith

Another thank you from the dogs

This is a stray dog. Someone went up to it and started petting it. Tears started to swell up in the dogs eyes. Probably hadn't seen any affection in a while...

Yulin isn't the only place this happens, and the festival isn't the only time they eat dog. There are a TONNE of stray dogs in Asia due to lack of spay/neutering, they run wild, breed, have nothing to eat, parasites, diseases and frankly there are many just by looking at them that I would have a hard time petting without some serious gloves and sanitizer close by. Putting some of these animals out of their misery and consuming them insteading of wasting/ burying them isn't the worst thing that a human could do, there's a level of compassion to doing so for the sake of quality of life. However, what some of these people believe is that by torturing them, the meat tastes better and is better for you. The methods I listed in blue above aren't the only methods of turture they use, and if you wanna sleep at night I would recommend if doing any research keep your eyes mostly closed. Please don't forget about these poor animals humans bred to be our pets, hunting partners, herders, seeing eye assistants, loving comapanions etc.... They're too smart, loyal, caring, playful, to be treated this way.

Thank you from the all the strays that benefit from people who care and organizations like Soi Dog. To date Soi Dog alone has sterilized over 142,000 dogs and cats, this takes money, time and volunteers, and is likely the most effective way to take care of the problem. Aside from raising funds and awareness towards the cause one of the greatest gifts these dogs can receive from a human is to be ADOPTED. Soi dog is the only organization I'm aware of that will allow you to adopt a dog and arrange transport to you in Canada, so please consider sponsoring/adopting one of these furry friends.

Heading home now to see my little Heisenberg the yorkie, he'll be the most excited little guy in the world to see his daddy home from work. Just wish I could do more to show ALL these dogs someone cares. Wipes a few tears away. Thanks again for the bids :thumb:

On a brighter note

"On Tuesday, the Legislative Yuan approved a landmark amendment to Taiwan's Animal Protection Act, banning the selling, purchasing, consumption or possession of dog or cat meat with offenders facing fines of between NT$50,000 (US$1600) to NT$250,000 (US$8100) and having photos of themselves publicized, according to Focus Taiwan News."

"The amendments also stiffen punishment for those who intentionally harm animals to a maximum two years' imprisonment and fines of NT$200,000 to NT$2 million.

Repeat offenders can be jailed for one to five years and fined NT$500,000 to NT$5 million."

They are the first country in Asia to do so. Thanks Taiwan 🇹🇼

Thanks for the kind bid

Meet Ken, a 9-year-old boy from the Philippines. Earlier this year, his dad wondered what he was getting up to all day and found out that Ken was feeding neighborhood dogs. “My son kept coming across these dogs while taking his own dog for a walk. My son says at first the dogs would only eat the food he left for them when he was 50 feet away,” he continued. “Gradually they got used to him. But even now, only the white puppy will come within petting distance.”

Some very kind people who saw these pictures donated money to help me care for the dogs,” Ken explains. “We got enough money to get the dogs I was feeding off the street, feed them high quality canned food, and provide them with veterinary care. They gained a LOT of weight, their open wounds healed, and their fur grew back.
What a difference Ken’s love and some charitable strangers made in these dogs’ lives. Look at the transformation these dogs—the same dogs, named Brownie (the brown one), Blackie (the black one), and White Puppy (the white puppy)—made in just a few months. Most importantly, “They also learned not to be scared of humans,” Ken says.

Now, they’re also the first residents of a non-profit, no-kill animal shelter that Ken started. With all the money he raised, Ken was able to lease 10,000 square feet of land and start the Happy Animals Club.
“My dad told me it would take a lot of money and 20 years for me to get an animal shelter. He said only grown ups can raise enough money to start an animal shelter,” Ken says on his site.
His goal? “I want to save as many [dogs] as I can from being killed for no reason.”

Thanks Ken and keep up the caring work!

Update

Not sure if this is a 100% success story YET but it appears as though there will be a ban in place by the time this years Yulin dog meat festival begins on the summer solstice. The ban is only temporary but likely halt the festival from taking place this year and due to global pressure will hopefully never happen again. Thanks to any and all Canreef members who took the time to sign online petitions, thanks to Mr. Mo Gong Ming, Yulin’s new party secretary, and thanks again to Amber for the donation!

This is like Foie Gras....putting a huge amount of stress on an animal just to make it more tasty.

If this is a legitimate food source, it needs to be regulated.

As much as it disgusts me personally, I can't fault people who like to (by necessity or preference) eat animals that aren't typical for Western based cultures.

We raise and slaughter a significant number of animals and not every one is raised and killed in a humane way.

I would feel safe in assuming that slaughter houses in China, whether you are a pig, chicken, lamb, goat or cow are not ideal places to be.

Cats and Dogs are abundant and breed easily. I can understand how they can become a food source.

But my god...

This festival is human hubris at it's worst.

I sure hope that this is the beginning of the end for it.

The type of animal doesn't bother me either - it's the torture that bothers me. Be it in China or Canada.
