My sump room is separate from my display tank room and it's developed a really bad mold problem when the ceiling fan died and it took me a couple weeks to replace it. I've gotta go into the sump room and use a paint roller with bleach to kill it and then paint the drywall with a mold resistant paint like I should have originally. I have two 80G tanks (fuge and frag tank) and a 130G sump in there all with open tops. My question is, with good ventilation, should I be able to bleach the ceiling and walls without effecting the health of the tank? I have 600G of total water volume including the display tank and I'll make sure the skimmers are turned off so there's no air being mixed into the water either.

Thoughts?

Bleach may not do it, and won't keep it from coming back. I have some stuff at home from a while back when I had a bit of mold (not tank related). It worked great! When I get home I will check out the name for you. It was more like lemon pine-sol in smell. And left behind natural oils that prevented the growth of mold in the future. I don't think the smell of bleach alone would be damaging but I don't know that for sure!

Also if it's in the drywall you may as well rip that out and replace it with new moisture resistant stuff.

Theres no need to use bleach on mold. Just warm soapy water will remove it. Apparently there is evidence that using bleach on mold is bad. Causes it to release spores or something. At least that's if you listen to Mike Holmes haha.

Clean it off let it dry then paint with mold resistant paint.

Ya I've been doing some more reading and apparently tea tree oil is the best all natural mold killer, especially for porous material like drywall. I wonder what tea tree oil would do to a reef tank if it got in the water? It's an antibacterial solution.

Well they sell Melafix and Pimafix for aquarium use so I doubt it would do to much harm. Same genus of tree.
