Hello Everyone!

After a bunch of planning and research, I have finally began a build I have had in mind for a while now. I've always been a fan of tanks that are located in main areas of a home, becoming the center of attention while having drinks and hanging out. I purchased the townhouse I am currently living in just over a year ago in beautiful Calgary, Alberta! It is my first home purchase and has been a lot of fun over the past year.

I first got into the salt-game in 2011 with a 29-gallon tank. This was quickly upgraded to a 125-gallon reef, which was a real learning experience for me. A little over a year after the 125 had been running, I decided to make a few life changes and part of this process included my reef. I sold everything and moved, focusing my time on climbing - ice, rock, and alpine in the beautiful Canadian Rockies!

Luckily my job includes the operation, maintenance, and design of large commercial filtration systems. This would keep me entertained until the reef bug bit again . . .

Fast-forward a couple years. Last Christmas, I decided to purchase a small, 10-gallon AIO tank for my girlfriends apartment. I would maintain it, she could enjoy it. It started very simple. Annnd of course that didn’t last long. She moved in with me a couple months later and with her came the tank. The first vision of the “Oceanfront Bar” came to life!

I have been enjoying the challenges of maintaining a nano reef! I swear I spend more time on maintenance now then I used to with my automated 125! Which brings me to one of the major reasons for this upgrade – Stability. I enjoy the nano game and plan on sticking with it. But 10 gallons is SMALL. I’m looking for Small. If that makes any sense.

I decided to go with a custom built tank that I could fit to the dimensions of the bar/stand that currently houses the 10-gallon. This stand was actually purchased from IKEA. It fits the space perfectly and the price was right. The doors are both soft-closing which is a nice feature. I did frost the glass myself using a spray on the backside, which actually worked very well. Time will tell how it holds up.

Concept Aquariums here in Calgary are building the display and sump for me. I have worked with them in the past and they are great at what they do along with having very reasonable prices.

After a bunch of back and fourth I decided to go with Walt Smith Premium Fiji Pukani. I ordered it from ReefSupplies.ca and am very happy with it! There are some seriously awesome pieces in the mix and it came for a great price. I ended up getting 40 lbs and I think I will have a bit left over. I had a bin mixed up and ready for it to hang out in until the tank is ready for it. Check it out!

While I was waiting for the tank, I spent a bit of time reinforcing my IKEA stand. I secured a piece of 1/2" plywood across the back, using screws and wood glue. I also added four pieces of 2x4 on the bottom of the stand to spread out the weight. Here are a couple pics of the work:

Before:

After:

I ended up adding another hole on viewers left of that photo into the back of the 2nd cabinet. This will allow for the reactor plumbing. The back was painted white with Kilz Primer before being put back into place.

Well, after what felt like a lifetime, I finally picked up the tank, sump, and protein skimmer! Pics pics pics!

I am very happy with how everything is turning out! The one-piece euro brace looks as good as I was hoping. I ordered a couple of the self-leveling mats from Innovative Marine to place on the bottom of the tank and sump. I cut them to fit and they look great! You should be able to spot them in the photos.

Alright time for a plumbing update. Lets start with my bean animal overflow and returns. I wanted everything along the back of the tank to be black, drain pipes into the cabinet to be red, and the returns to be white. To accomplish this I ordered colored pvc from BRS. I looked around for a local supplier but had a really hard time finding anything. Maybe only the reefing community cares about stylish plumbing. As for black fittings, that was another story. I decided to go with krylon fusion for plastic paint and use white fittings. I sanded each fitting well before applying the paint. I also had to make a few modifications to some of the fittings in order to keep them from being visible when viewing the tank. This, and of course tapping the 1/4" threads into the top of the open channel cap. I used low profile strainers on each of the drains as well. Check it out!

You'll notice the two lines running to the cabinet opposite the sump. They are feeding my reactor. I had originally planned to keep the reactor in the same cabinet as the sump, but due to size constraints, it was banished to the far cabinet. I do have exciting plans for that side of things in the future!

On to the sump! Things came together pretty nicely for such a small space. The reactor outlet enters back into the sump as a silicone line. I did this strictly so its easy to pull the line out and place it in a bucket while rinsing carbon/gfo. Enjoy!

Time to finally get my rocks up into the tank! While researching aquascaping ideas, I came across one photo that I thought would fit my tank perfectly. I couldn't get the image out of my head so I decided to try and mimic it as best I could.

Inspiration:

http://i1234.photobucket.com/albums/ff418/NastayNatron/Aquascape_zpsjbkxafry.jpg (http://s1234.photobucket.com/user/NastayNatron/media/Aquascape_zpsjbkxafry.jpg.html)

Off to work! I used a hammer drill bit in a standard cordless drill to create holes where I needed them in the rock. Following that I inserted 3/8" acrylic rod into the holes. Some of the rock was epoxied, but a large amount was not. This way, if needed, I can easily lift a rock out of the tank off the acrylic rod.

Might as well keep the posts rolling! Time for sand. I used CaribSea Aragonite Special Grade Reef Sand. It's the sand I have used in past tanks and I've always liked it, so why not.

RO Rinse! I did 5 rounds of rinsing and that cleaned it up nicely.

Looks great! Can't wait to see how this one turns out!

Make sure there's enough room between your rocks and glass for your algae magnet. One on the right looks like it could be too close.

And finally I hung my Radion XR-15pro G3 over the tank and transferred my fish and coral! I didn't have much of an ammonia cycle because I've had the live rock curing downstairs for so long. I also mounted my Vortech MP-10 on the back wall of the tank and it fit perfectly. My coral are all looking a lot smaller as I had byprosis in my small tank and did not plan on introducing it immediately in the new tank, therefore they were cut back a lot to prevent any carryover. The switch over went great and everyone is happy in their new home! My pistol shrimp and goby have claimed the underside of the large rock and are very active digging away as always! Check it out!

Check out my sump! I decided to go with the Kessil H-150 Purple for my fuge light. I hung it with air craft cable and it looks pretty slick. It grows macro like crazy! Ill post a few shots of it lite up in the future.

All of the electrical runs behind the small drawer in the center of the stand across to the right hand cabinet. The electrical cabinet is about to get a big facelift once I get my dosers, new ATO reservoir, and a few other things, but its good enough for now.

Looks great! Can't wait to see how this one turns out!

Make sure there's enough room between your rocks and glass for your algae magnet. One on the right looks like it could be too close.

Thanks! I left enough room for the time being. I'm sure its going to be a battle once coral start to fill in to keep them away from the glass but that's a good thing haha.

Sorry about the massive pic drop! I felt like it was time to finally get a build thread on Canreef again!

Thanks! I picked up the Cerebra from Bulk Reef Supply while it was on the 50% off sale. I have a PH probe and another power bar being shipped right now so they will be added sometime next week along with the rest of the stuff for the right side cabinet.

Thanks! Concept did a great job. I requested the teeth be cut that way and they made it look awesome. The red pvc is from Bulk Reef Supply. I looked around a bunch trying to find it in Canada but had no luck. It was fairly expensive when you factor in the exchange rate and shipping but it adds a lot of character to the tank!

Now that's a pimped out nano! A brand new nano is not a good place for a starfish or urchin, you may have to find someone to babysit them. I really like your sump, and that's awesome that you have space for a Chaeto chamber in the sump.

BRS had a 50% off sale?? Damn, that makes it worth buying in US dollars! When was that? It sucks that Proline Aquatics moved to the US - I don't think we'll see so much Vertex up here anymore, at least not until the dollar gets better. Vertex just got 36% more expensive for us. :(

Thanks for the advice! I've had the starfish and urchin for just over 5 months now, moving them from my old setup into this tank. Currently they are spot feeding often with a mix of frozen food and seaweed sheets (urchin loves them). I am hoping this along with the live rock will help kick start my system fast enough to sustain them. I have a friend with a large tank who I could give them too in the mean time but I enjoy the spot feeding - so its tough to give them up

haha the BRS 50% off was only for Vertex Cerebra packages for the purposes of the beta testing. I believe they sold 400ish units? They also have discounts on all other cerebra related equipment which is still going on, but I'm guessing that will end once the beta is finished. Vertex being in the states has definitely hurt on this build. In case ya didn't notice, I happen to be a fan of them!

Time for an update! I have completed the equipment side of my reef . I ordered dosing pumps from BRS and programmed them with my Cerebra. Its been nice to be done with daily manual dosing! I completed my "electrical cabinet" on the upper side of the right cabinet with the addition of a Vortech Battery Backup.

http://i1234.photobucket.com/albums/ff418/NastayNatron/IMG_6662_zpsi4pkrnlm.jpg (http://s1234.photobucket.com/user/NastayNatron/media/IMG_6662_zpsi4pkrnlm.jpg.html)

I created a cover utilizing a left over shelf from the cabinet and white trim. I mounted a small brushed nickel knob on the left for easy removal. The cover clicks easily into place using cabinet magnets which I mounted in the corners. It makes it look pretty clean.

http://i1234.photobucket.com/albums/ff418/NastayNatron/IMG_6714_zpsaw7bxj7a.jpg (http://s1234.photobucket.com/user/NastayNatron/media/IMG_6714_zpsaw7bxj7a.jpg.html)

I also added a second power bar for my Cerebra. 6 outlets was not enough with the first one. I did not have a lot of options for mounting the power bar due to size constraints. I removed the liquor from the middle of the stand along with the middle shelf. I used the same method for mounting the first power bar as you can see below. I then notched a section out of the shelf before putting it back in place. It looks great and actually did not take up a lot of room in the back. It is totally invisible once the bottles are back in place!

Alright I've had my Vertex Cerebra Controller up and running on my tank for a little while now so I think its time I post a review. This won't be super in-depth, but for anyone considering eventually buying this controller, it could be helpful.

What I have:

Vertex Cerebra Controller
6 outlet multi bar
6 outlet power bar
Temperature Probe
Dual Junction PH Probe (Neptune not Vertex)

First impressions: As with all Vertex products, the Cerebra came packaged very well and looked great. You could probably drop the box off a building and I'm sure everything would still be in tact! As for initial setup, it wasn't too bad. Mounting the multi-bar was a bit of a pain. In order to get the mounting hardware installed, you must remove the end cap off of the bar. This isn't a big deal, but being instructions for this are not included, it took me a few minutes to figure it out. One thing that was a hurdle for me was the size of the power bars. The multi bar includes 6 outlets along with a good selection of other inputs for probes, floats, etc. The power bar contains just 6 outlets. I am using one of each. These power bars are 20" long. Having a nano, it was tricky to fit two of them in. I would hope that eventually Vertex will release a small 3-6 outlet power bar for nano setups.

Initial programming was fairly straightforward. I just used the touch screen with the stylist provided and that worked well enough for me. You can plug a mouse and keyboard directly into the display to speed things up. You can also remote into the screen if you use the VNC server option. I found it a little simpler to set up than my Apex I had last, although that was about 5 years ago. The Apex functionality is probably a lot different now. The controller has "rules" built into its programming. They are pre-built programs and make things easy to setup. I won't go into detail on them - if you are interested, BRS did a full review on the controller and it contains all of this info.

The Wifi has worked seamlessly for me. I have been doing roughly bi-weekly updates as they come out with no real issues. Vertex is quick to act on any issues that come up. My temperature probe did not work when it arrived and they were quick to help me out. I had it shipped back to vertex with shipping labels they provided and received it back in working order within good time.

The one complaint I do have is the speed at which Vertex is developing the Cloud functionality. The cloud currently is just a preview for everyone to see the layout, but that's about it. Even e-mail and text notifications haven't gone live yet. I am hoping they are up and running by my Christmas holiday, but more than likely it will be sometime in the new year. Once the cloud comes out in full swing, I'll post a review on that side of things.

All in all, so far I am happy I went with this controller. The large, customizable screen is awesome for checking things over at a glance and commanding things on and off is quick and easy. I am not overly bothered not having notifications and the cloud functionality available yet, although with vacations coming up it is starting to bother me more. Hopefully by the summer everything will be 100%! If anyone is considering this controller and wants to know anything specific, ill try and answer as best I can!
