View Full Version : Why is my BTA so stretched?

It has been in my tank for around 2 months now, moved twice until now (initially settled within few hours, remained there for over a month and decided to change the spot about 2" away, didn't like it and went to the new spot and have been there for a week or so; knock on the wood). It started like this:

Stayed like that for a week or so and once acclimated, it looks like this:

Seems to be eating fine, starts the day with bubbles (bluer spectrum) and looses them over the day and then becomes smaller during the night. Don't have any experience with the different "state" of a BTA so any expert advise on this would be appreciated :) Tank water or tank does not need any troubleshooting.

Thanks in advance :)

My BTA hasn't had bubble tips for years, many years. They are mysterious critters.

They sure are. Initially I was getting artificial heart attacks from different states it was going through but the stretched part looks very weird and haven't been able to find anything online. I have two separate pumps alternating flow at 30mins and even when it is not getting blasted with flow, it stays in this deformed way. Weird creature! As long as it is not in trouble, I am not concerned.

They are terribly weird. Mine have always been like that. I have 2 that split into 4. 3 remained like that. The 4th I put under a par38 LED in my frag tank and the bubbles blew up like crazy. So odd.

Ive got 2 types of RBTA in my tank. One type bubbles and the other doesnt. Who knows..... they are both very happy - great color and eat whatever I give them.

One type is a standard RBTA like FishyFish has in the pic & it bubbles.
The other is more like mrhasan's and it doesnt buble.

Same water - same lighting.....

Thanks for your inputs; appreciate it :) Seems like BTAs are known for weird behavior. But I am yet to see one with the coral disk stretched like the one I have; did any of your BTA ever do something like that?

Reduce the flow over it. After a few weeks it'll bubble back up

I have a about 3 or 4 bubble tips and the ones getting the most flow have the biggest bubbles and the ones below are stringy. I have found when I add more flow the bubbles come back.

Ive found the exact opposite of this with mine. Too much flow and they get stringy. No flow and they bubble up.
