It will be mine (evil laugh and lightning in background).. Myka where do you keep it, as for flow and light?

So have their ever been reported knock offs of this coral?

I know this one is the real deal, is there anything even close out there otherwise?

I know they were alluded to in the auction...

I keep it in a low flow area of my tank (I have 75x turnover in there though) and low light. ..about 200 PAR.

Yeah, there are wild imported ones with the same color combo but the brightness isn't even comparable.

Even half as bright would still be a pretty nice piece.

I still think it would be nicer if I could see it in person in my tank. That's just my opinion though.

Yes I can get as many maricultured ones as you want. Green and yellow but not nearly as bright. I have the real deal as well and it is totally worth the extra money!

They are maricultured? I thought they were wild.

The ones I have seen were Maricultured. I have never seen a wild one with similar colors.

I was just wondering if there were lesser versions available.

I've never seen one like it in any lfs in any case.

half as bright or the real deal.

Though I don't peruse online vendors very much for livestock.

The real deal is very different from anything we have seen imported. That is why we snapped up a piece of the Original Tyree Space Invaders Pectinia when it was available to us couple of years ago here in Ontario.

More frags of it will be posted soon.

still feel some fear of missing/regret when I log on and see this pic.

Keeping my eyes out for the KO's at JL.

Paying closer attention now.

if it's a KO, PM me, I am definitely interested.

if it's the real deal, I have an upgrade in my near future and don't want to worry about a high end coral during the switch.

Either way, thanks for the offer.

So what is a knock off?

Myka
04-22-2016, 12:49 AM
So what is a knock off?

A coral that looks similar, but isn't the same quality such as same species, similar color morph, but not as bright.

gobytron

If often has do with lineage as well, which is basically the same thing.

So a reason why, besides the insane colors, that a piece like Mykas can and should go for a premium is because it is a well known coral by a breeder or propagator that has already created some awareness in the hobby.

Like name brand corals.

Once established, you'll see a lot of other breeders/propagators put similar looking corals out there and pass them off as the real thing.

It's easy to convince someone that something looks a little off because of the lighting or water parameters...especially if the price is right.

Interesting, so do you think Tyree or Fox or whoever should get compensation for downstream frags?

We are getting off topic sorry to thread-jack Myka maybe we should start another topic elsewhere? Maybe not though, this topic could go up in flames.

As with any material goods, it's all supply and demand based.

So as soon as there are more frags out there than buyers, the price will come down.

Remember when Purple Death Palys were 40 bucks a polyp?

You see it all the time with corals...Rastas are a good recent example.

So you can pay now and have something virtually no one else does or you can wait a while, years maybe, and get it for cheaper when it's not so special anymore.

The evidence of this coral becoming more common is already in this thread.

There is no patent on nature...if anyone should be getting kick backs, it's the environment.

Tyree or whoever didn't make or invent these corals, they just found them and marketed them.

They deserve nothing other than the early premium they get, IMO.

Early buyers will benefit the most, I would bet the price for the first ever recorded frag of this was astronomical but so would be the frags coming from it downstream with diminishing returns from there.
