View Full Version : Mixed Feelings With Bad Experience

Just wanted to write about a bad experience I had on here recently. Ended up buying 4 Ecotech Radion G3 Pros from a member here. The person was very genuine, helpful, and excellent to deal with the whole way through. After receiving the lights I realized that they weren't G3 Pros though, they were just G3's. I realize the difference is minimal but I have a 30" deep SPS tank and that's not what I thought I was buying. On top of that though, 3 of them were actually G2's that had been upgraded to G3's. So a lot older than what I was expecting too.

When I contacted the seller they didn't realize they weren't Pros or that they used to be G2's either. I do believe the person because they've always had a good reputation here but I still can't help but feel a little ripped off still to a certain degree. They were also mad that they purchased these lights as G3 pros from a friend of theirs, and they apologized for not realizing it before they sold them to me. I appreciate the apology, and I appreciate the fact they purchased the lights under false pretenses as well but that still doesn't do anything for me in my situation and when I asked if they'd be willing to do anything, they just said sorry but they couldn't.

Now I understand that it's always buyer beware when buying anything used but this isn't the kind of behavior I would expect from someone that's always had a good name on this board. Am I being a bit too sensitive or would this make you nuts too? Just had to talk it out rather than stew on it like I have been. Thanks.

I think you are 100% right in what you said, and kudos for not going on a rampage naming names and so forth.

I think there seller should either give you a partial refund, or take them back (your expense for shipping) and try to re-sell them (labelled correctly)

Just my opinions on the 'right" thing to do. Good luck :)

I agree with Jordan completely, way to be the bigger man and not calling people out publicly especially when reeling is a pretty small community
I don't think you are out of line to ask for a partial refund or he just buys them back from you. It's not your fault his friend did whatever to them. You paid for something and didn't get it.

that is shady as hell, that's all I can say... at least give something in return... grrrr!

This is the main reason I to avoid used products. You never really get what you expect. Whether the seller is honest or dishonest. But I can say one thing. KARMA is a bitch.

G2's and G3's look different. The seller knew they had different models.

I upgraded one of my G2's to a G3 and when repgramming them, the G2 always lags and I have to redo the programming sometimes.

I'd ask for your money back and they can resell them for what they really are. If they refuse again, make their name public to warn others. Maybe they have a good reputation because others are worried about going public as well.

I wouldn't be happy either. The seller should take the back and re-sell them as what they actually are.

If you do want to keep them then perhaps a bit of a break on the price should be a possibility.

Part of me is hoping he sees this and uses some of the money from the other stuff he's selling to refund me some of the money. That's the right thing to do in my opinion.

Starting to question if he did know they were G2's upgraded to G3's and not Pros all along too. One of them was sent away for repair to Reef Wholesale while it was in his possession. You'd think the company that repaired the unit would notify him if it was a G3 or G3 Pro. The 4th Radion I got from him too, he said he got it off a friend of his. This unit was a G3 at least but I find it hard to believe his friend didn't know it was a G3 Pro either. Way too much inconsistency here for my liking.

Jason,
Please feel to message me at tparsons@reefwholesale.com to discuss any concerns you may have or the warranty/repair work that was completed by Reef Wholesale on units in your possession.

I will need the serial numbers as well as the person you purchased them from to look up the history.

Thanks Trina. Just want you to know that this post is in no way directed at you guys at all. That's just the information I got from the individual. I will send you the details though and thank you for your assistance.

Something smells fishy.
Hope this gets resolved to your satisfaction.

You bought 4 lights based on what the seller said they were and not a single one of them turned out to be what was promised. You should be mad because you got ripped off! An honest seller would take them back if it was an actual mistake or refund you an appropriate amount in you want to keep them. Refusing to do so shows the person knew what he was selling you all along.

Claims he's using the money just to pay his mortgage and that he can't do anything because he has no money. I'm not an insensitive guy but does that make it ok to steal from my family to help yours?

No, not at all.

Notify a mod on this site so they can remove this seller from canreef so that more people aren't disceived by this seller.

The seller has contacted me since posting this and we've worked out a compromise. If he follows through then I'm going to leave it be since I'm a reasonable person. Stay tuned...

Been following this thread all day and I'm glad it appears to have been resolved equitably. Will continue to look for updates so that we will see if things work out and promises made are followed through.

Good for you to maintain your cool over what could be an expensive and nasty situation. PROPs my friend (does anyone even still say this?)

Canreef staff want to remind everyone that it is your responsibility to do your homework when buying items listed here in the buy and sell. Now I don't know any of the circumstances in this case (because none of the parties seemed to have PM'ed any staff) but if you are planning on purchasing a couple thousand dollars of equipment from out of province, it might be a good idea to get photos, serial numbers, etc, before any commitments are made. Both parties in this case are outstanding members and no action will be taken. I am glad to hear that this is trying to be resolved... privately.

I had a situation somewhat similar to yours recently. Wasn't sold something under the impression that the equipment was something else, but I received a faulty unit. The seller and I actually resolved the issue just earlier today and I ended up with a very nice coral that I've always wanted. The seller was very generous with the whole situation. I hope it will be a happy ending for you as well.

Well, I am pretty sure who you got them from and I bought them from him. Told him that I had the cash, agreed on a price if I took them all and would pick them up next day for sure. He said sold. Then the next day he sent a msg and said too bad, he sold them for more than what we agreed upon.
So not to sure I agree that this guy has such good intentions.

A mans word is his bond, in my world.

You were going to drive to Alberta to pick them up?

Why would I have to drive to Alberta if I was already there?

I guess people are not allowed to travel in this country.

So to your point...If it is not the same guy then I will Apologize and reword my experience to clarify that I had a bad experience when buying the same "type" and amount of lights from a person in a Province other than BC

In fact I have had another person on here say it was sold to me and then sell it out from under me for an extra 50 bucks or so and that person is from BC.

and in fact, I had bought something else from here, that was shipped to me from another province. When it arrived it was basically useless, as vital parts were missing and it would have costed the same amount of money to buy replacement parts as I paid for the item. Although I was quite upset, it was resolved between the two of us and I threw the item away.

So....buyer beware...That is my point

Couldn't agree more.

Travel is highly restricted, didn't you get the memo in the newsletter?

I just wanted to update everyone that the seller did come through and we were able to settle up. I'm very sorry it came to this. I do believe the seller is a good guy and has just got caught up in a bad situation. I hold nothing against him and wish him the best in the future. Thanks everyone for your suggestions and support throughout the ordeal :)
