View Full Version : SQWD, how does it work?

Alright, mine stopped working so I thought to myself, "Hey, I should rip this thing open, dismantle it and see why it stopped."

No such luck. I can't get into it. I don't know what kind of plastic they are using, but it is proving rather difficult, resisting all my attempts at cutting, smashing, heating and cracking.

I'll update as I make progress, that or if someone else just happens to know how this thing works and can save me some time and effort, that would be cool also.

Have you tried soaking it in Vinegar for a few days? I've never seen one open, but from what I've read it's just an impeller, rotating a piece of plastic that opens one valve and closes the other

Actually, the impeller was busted. It fell out of the unit, that's why I didn't bother with the soaking -- just went straight for the trashing.

I still haven't gotten into it. It started burning and making all sorts of stink when I took it to the craft saw. Blast you SQWD!! Defeated by a piece of plastic... Again.

I think how they work is water pressure from the pump causes a gear to turn which in turns moves flappers to open or close on either of the outputs....just guessing though.

I think reefs.org has a thread with pics on it. If I was to perform surgery on it I would use a dremel. Being that a part fell out I'd say your hooped, they're cheap so you can get a year or two out of them and cha-ching get a new one.

Dremel is a good idea. If that isn't available a hacksaw and lots of elbow grease should do the trick.

Get on it! I'm curious to see the guts as well. Any chance you could post pics?

Hmm, the pics aren't showing for me on either IE or Firefox.

The Dremmel isn't up to the job as I can't find any table clamps. Blast! My mom gave me hell when I got home. All this hoorah about wasting money. Psssh, I'll show her once I figure out the inner mechanics of this thing and make my acrylic knockoff.

Here's to the impending success of my future million dollar venture!

You have to register as a memeber on RDO before the pictures will load.

Alright, I give up. This thing just doesn't want to be opened. I took my Dremmel to it today and it shot a piece of molten plastic against my desk and onto the tip of my nose. I now have this pinhead red spot on my nose. I think it's a sign.

The dremel was too fast, try the hacksaw.
