How to catch any fish in the reef tank.

Do you ever get bored with that blue damsel or a chromis that you bought to start the tank? Or you got a fish that got so big and its time to move that fish to a larger tank but you never able to catch that fish because your reef is packed with live rock and corals?

Here is the trick that you will only appreciate when you really want “that fish” out of your tank badly, but can’t catch it.

Using this method I got a large Frecnh Angel out of my tank, and even a dart fast Foxface. It will work on any fish that is not overly huge.

Get a (yes you guessed it right) pop bottle or a juice bottle.
Cut the bottom off
Cut the top off
Get any clip to hold it to the rim inside of the tank. Leave about 1 inch above water surface where a clip holds it to the rim of your tank and aprox. 4-5 inches submerged.
Trap is ready!

Here is the “science” behind it.
Use this as a feeding station for a week or so. This will help to keep floating flakes and pellets on the surface and fish will have to “enter” the feeding station and swim up to the surface. In a week or so time the fish will get use to going in the “feeding station” but most importantly the clear bottle will start getting lees clear, after coralline or other algae will start growing on the walls. My trap is square from the juice bottle and is slightly larger.
So after a week or so, or when you are ready to sell that fish or move it to a larger tank:
• Get the fish net ready.
• Wear dark (black is best) clothing. Reflective, and or fluorescent bright colored things will scare the fish.
• Turn the lights behind you OFF (moving shadows will scare the fish)
• Get the bag or bucket ready.
• Fish must be hungry so don’t feed before this time.
• Keep fish net in one hand and at the tank rim level ready to scoop.
• Hold the fishnet so that there is no net hanging and net is NOT touching the water.
• With other hand drop that fish’s favorite food in to the feeding station. Food must float and not sink.
• Fish goes in to the feeding station and because the sides are no longer clear, its line of site and all peripheral vision is blocked by the walls of the feeding station. Also the fish has to swim up a little to get the food from the surface.
• Now is your time to scoop it quickly.
• Gotcha!

This method works like a clock every time !. Look here at my tank full of SPS there is no way I could catch that French Angel with out the above described method.

I also got the Hippo Tang using the same method.
