Time to start a new thread. I will keep a link to my 50g sps tank. I somehow went from adding a small sump to my 50g to a 75g to a 90g.

New tank is an All Glass standard size 90g. Not drilled yet.
Salt Water Connection 180 cone skimmer.
2 Evergrow 2040 led fixtures & 1 SWC Extreme led fixture
20g sump w/Eheim 1260 return pump.
2 Vortech MP 40, two Jebao RW 10s
Apex controller monitoring all values & warnings.
Tunze Osmolator top off

And more to come. Have to condition another 60# of Pukani rock. Drill tank &'build overflows. And so on :D

Did they redesign it? It fit under my 90, and my stand was super short. It's under my 50 right now, and that stand is super short too.

It fits under there. Im thinking of using my 50g as the sump, which won't. That would also give more room for the skimmer.

Overflows done & drying. Some idiot forgot to tape the front right one.
Oh well, won't be seen once covered. As the stones sand, "paint it black", as on my back glass.

The 6 in. where overflows are will be hidden. And piping will go through visible hole to my office/fishroom.

Doug
06-06-2015, 01:58 AM
Did you know the tape is to be pulled while silicone is still wet. I never. DOH!!!!!!
Should have watched the u tube video first. Guess a partial redo tomm. I picked up an older 40g cube style tank for a sump. 3/8th glass. All braced. Going to redo all the seams. Guess I will know how this time.

I cut it completely out this morning.

Doug

Completely removed front overflow yesterday. Never liked the layout. Spent couple hours removing silicone. Drilled another hole & put new overflow beside the other. Looks better & once acrylic cover is added, even better. Right now they are even in height. May have to put a horizontal divider between the two to keep Duraso,s working correct.

My good friend went to Concepts after me and grabbed this sump out back. Brought it back and cleaned it all up and then gave it to me for my new tank. A bit large at 88g for a 90g tank. But who could resist such a nice looking sump and a very nice gesture. Besides just run it about 9in.deep and it has a 10g fresh water storage, plus converting old sock area to a quarantine and half the huge return pump side for a refugium.

http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/ii86/Flatlander_photos/IMG_0180_zpsnzbncoyj.jpg (http://s262.photobucket.com/user/Flatlander_photos/media/IMG_0180_zpsnzbncoyj.jpg.html)

Fresh water and sock compartment. Will raise the left side and a nice quarantine..

http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/ii86/Flatlander_photos/IMG_0182_zpsxupka0gc.jpg (http://s262.photobucket.com/user/Flatlander_photos/media/IMG_0182_zpsxupka0gc.jpg.html)

Right side will be skimmer place and overflow lines in. No socks.

http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/ii86/Flatlander_photos/IMG_0184_zps5e6dl41h.jpg (http://s262.photobucket.com/user/Flatlander_photos/media/IMG_0184_zps5e6dl41h.jpg.html)

I just sit here looking at it, as its so nice. :D. Sure glad for good friends. Thanks Mike. When I do the new tank, its going bare with a starboard type bottom. So my many sand critters, yellow coris, leopard wrasse, and whatever else will go to Mikes 90g & 35g Red Sea.

Sorry those pics are so large. Photo bucked editor on the fritz.

Doug
06-08-2015, 03:38 PM
Thanks Mindy. Figured it would be a good way to use all that space for a good purpose.

I also removed the glass overflows. Friend bringing me some heavy duty starboard type material for both the bottom in white, {thinner} and black, {thick} for the overflows, instead of trying to cover the glass.

Myka

You can't silicone Starboard. Starboard is the same material as plastic cutting boards...it's less gluable than acrylic.

Hmmm. So no way to attach it. An acrylic cement. ? How do they attach acrylic overflows ?

Doug
06-09-2015, 04:04 AM
So the overflow stuff is half inch acrylic. We using weld on for the acrylic to acrylic joint and silicone for acrylic to glass.

That's how. :) Personally, I'd rather use a glass overflow and silicone 1/4" acrylic onto it. I wouldn't trust the acrylic to glass seal long-term. Make sure you have standpipes in the overflows in case they leak so they don't drain your whole tank. If you want to have a sweet overflow, use black glass. Acrylic attracts coralline algae like nobody's business and you can't scrub it off because you will scratch the acrylic. That's the reason I got the whole back of my new tank done in black glass.

Doug
06-09-2015, 05:23 PM
Tanks for the great info Mindy. The black glass only comes in 6m so going with acrylic covered glass in 3/8th plus the acrylic. And yes I have stand pipes. I usually use plumbing tape on them so they don't leak.

You're welcome. Assuming you mean 6 mm...that's not true. The black glass on my tank is 10 mm IIRC. I also have a kitchen table with really thick black glass - never measured it.

Could just be my supplier. They do have 10mm in smoked grey but thats not as dark. Perhaps I will order the 6mm and cover the clear glass with it..

Why not have the overflow built out of reg glass and silicone a veneer of the black glass over it?

New plan is to use the half inch acrylic thats ready. Already slotted also. Going to use glass braces on the inside. Going to paint the acrylic with Krylon Fusion black, which it seems many use in their tanks.

Now to work on the overflow walls itself. Using two pieces of 10mm glass cover by 6mm black acrylic..

Not allowed to ask why my front acrylic is cut like that. The glass patch on the right is for the hole drilled when I was going to do two end overflows. I valved it for future use, but as it was sticking out I was sure as clumsy as I am, it would not be long before I hit it and cracked the glass.

Tanks 3/4 full of water with the new Pukani in already and pretty well cycled.

Well back to square one. C,mon Mindy, catch up time.....:D
Tanks drained, rocks removed. Tomorrow is cutting and ,UG, scraping day. I already removed the piping into the other room, as I may as well raise it to the appropriate height so there is no vertical to the sump.
Anyone use anything special to remove that last film of silicone? Thanks

They make a "window scraper" that holds the old style razor blades that cleans glass of anything.

Took a couple pieces of rock from my sump and put them on the tank. Mandarin & copperband are all over them.

30 plus years of plumbing aquariums, never a plumbing leak. NOW however!!!!!!! Small leak in return line...shut off pump, close drain valves, tank runs over because I unplugged skimmer instead of return pump.
Fix and clean up mess. Turn back on next day. ..New return line leak. How is that possible. Cut all drains and returns off near sump and redid them all. Still drying.
This is last time before a Red Sea Max 250. I know where theres one with my name on it.:D

Well I redid it and turned it back on yesterday. Another dribble. I can't speak. Must have a bad plc glue or something. Even Im not that stupid.
Then looking at my fish and my scopas who's been back in my tank for over a week, has ick. How the &^%# does he go from perfect health in a healthy tank to ick. Good thing I have bad luck as otherwise I would have none at all.
Im feeding Garlic infused frozen & flakes. Hopefully it clears up.

Oh ya and I redid the plumbing yet again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Nice tank doug

Thanks Mike but had big problems. No answers or ideas. Never before such problems. Lost corals, and fishes. My clowns are sick but in quarantine being treated.

I have a 35g RSM with my stuff moved in. Pretty nice tank as you know. Not the large one but thats fine.

Tanks DONE. Wrapped up waiting for sale. Can only take so much. Lost several hundred $$$$$$ in frags. Scoops gets ick out of the blue?????? Lost several fish. Never in all my years have I had problems like that.
Now I have my prized pair of percs in quarantine trying to save their life, with momma looking out of the glass at me for help. SAD.
I have moved my remaining corals and frags plus the surviving fish to my 35g RSM I got from a good friend. Will start a thread on it at a later date after this passes.
Anywho its the end of this one. Shows you should be happy with what you have. My 50g Fluvial was doing great, fish happy and great coral growth & colour. But oh no, have to upgrade. BLAH !!!!!!

Sorry to hear about the bumpy road this build took. Forgive me if I am misunderstanding, but your scopas got ick (and died?) and you have the clowns in QT, but you moved other fish and coral to the 35g RSM? Wouldn't that guarantee the the RSM has ick now? It's also very late, so I may be missing something obvious.

In any event, you must have the patience of Job to continue after this roller coaster of a tank build. I'd feel like throwing in the towel if I had to go through this! I hope things settle down with your next one.

The three in the RSM did not show sick signs. My copperband, {of all fish}. bangaii & leopard wrasse seem to be all fine. The 35 was not running before. Contents are form the larger reef. I had to save what corals I could, especially the rack full I just brought back from Calgary.

I lost the male clown this morning. The female was giving him little pushes to get him moving. Mind you she always did that. Was a terrible morning for me. I sure hope the female makes it.

All my remaining rock is outside in a large tub with a couple of large powerhead. Will have yo go fishless for a couple months before use is another tank. Not mine, its for sale $200 for about 150lbs.

Thanks for the post.

Doug

I really have no idea Mindy. It started downhill for who knows why. The scopas developed ick. My water looked like crap. Checked every parameter. Either something got in there or problem with the rock.
Corals started to recede. Nothing stopped it. Water changes, etc. Ick spread. Moved my clowns to quarantine to try save them. Took stuff out t see if it could be saved. Ended up being the whole tank. All the corals that survived went into my 35g. Lost half of them over the next few weeks.
Clowns put up a good fight but lost in the end. I sat there and cried as they suffered. My copperband of all fish never missed a beat. Bangaii, fire fish, leopard wrasse and all inverts fine. Who knows. I tried using all my 35 yrs experience to turn it around or figure it out. BLAH. Just excepted it for what it was. DOH !!!!!!!!!

Don't be. I have done a ton of tank transfers including interprovincial with no losses. This one is a complete mystery. Obvious it was not just a rtn type event, as whatever the cause was, hurt the fish also.

Doug that it terrible! I'm so sorry for the losses. :(

Thanks Mindy. I could handle most all the loss, except for the clowns. Not sure why them and not the others I mentioned, like the copperband.

That sucks Doug, sorry to hear about your losses

Thanks Greg. I still have many of the frags I picked up. Including the special one. Good excuse for another visit.

As I posted in the marine fish forum, I think after further research its velvet and not ick. How it got into my tank is another question, unless its from stress. Whatever caused my tanks downfall could've stressed them so much they developed it?

Anyone know if food grade cutting board could have something in it? Thats one of the causes that has me head scratching.

Did you add any corals? If so, did you dip and/or QT them? Ick can be transferred on rocks or plugs when it is in the tomont stage.

Lots of new frags yes. They had a coral rx bath at the end of their prep. FWTW

Not sure if dipping is enough to kill all the tomonts. Have you ever had ick before in that tank? It can last a long time without severely affecting your fish if they are strong and healthy. But if stressed, that could prompt an outbreak.

Here is a good link that might give you some clues.
http://reefsanctuary.com/forum/index.php?threads/marine-ich-myths-and-facts.23132/

I have had ick problems in the past, but not since after QTing all fish and corals.

Doug
08-28-2015, 05:38 PM
Nothing before. Been 20 yrs. since one of my fish had ick.

Then it must have come in with the corals if you didn't add any fish either. It can't just appear on its own if your tank was ich free before.
