Pictures and deeds speak volumes. Some members may follow and know of large scale private aquarium in the Toronto area that has been actively followed on various different sites. I wanted to share with you a recent sad/tragic (for now) event.

It all begins on Post#838

http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2096730&page=34

You may want to start at the very beginning of the adventure from Page 1. The pictures at any point of the thread are astounding.

Apologies to the admins if this is an inappropriate post.

I can't imagine....
I've talked to Peter several times in the past couple years, he was always willing to give advice, even opened his home to others. He has done what most of us can only dream of.

unbelievably terrible. I could only imagine that much water being let go never mind to loss of aquatic life...

Peter has graciously opened his home for visits and viewing in the past. Mr. Wilson has always welcomed questions. Videos from the past are enclosed:

I have read Peters thread almost since its inception. Can't believe that it's gone, and in a matter of minutes.

Good on him to make the decision (at least right now) to start again. Looking forward to the new build thread!

oh dear lord.. that's brutal ! I can't even imagine that kind of pain. Although, I'm not sure which is more painful, the tank exploding or the $100,000 per year maintenance cost :surprise:

This is seriously heartbreaking I feel his pain. I got added insurance for my tanks to cover any situation like this. Hopefully never have to use it.

We got a little taste of what it must have been like today.

Our 300G deep dimensions tank decided to let go today. Good thing it happened during business hours for the employees to notice.

Thankfully nothing was lost!

OMG, I had to stop and read that twice in that thread. Crazy money. Seriously tho, so incredibly sad. And a 10% survival rate on the fish. Wow.

Aww, man. Sorry to hear, but glad you didn't lose anything (and hopefully your floors are ok). Its stories like these that keep me up at night (and get me out of bed damned quick when I hear weird noises at night).

Thanks.

Our recent experience does not even hold a candle to Peters.

Only about 100G ended up leaking out. We were able to drain the tank before it completely drained itself.

We have floating wood floors so they will need to be replaced. I already have a new tank scheduled to be delivered.

The truth of the matter is any tank from any builder can break, defects in the seams or material can easily be missed and as far as I know no builder has a proper testing procedure. I've always thought someone should develop a design code/standard for larger aquariums, making it a requirement for commercial and optional for residential. The standard would include a hydrotest procedure for pressure testing aquariums to a given amount beyond the design pressure, thus substantially reducing the chances of defects like this being missed.

^ Absolulty. Its just ironic that the point where it initially failed was right under that logo sticker of the builder

How was it leaking? From one of the seams or ?

If you couldn't read the whole read what Peter had wrote on the failure there was no leakage nor any indication of an impending failure it was a sudden failure no warning at all.

If Peter or his crew had noticed any defect at all they would of done something about it.

The tank ran for 5 years and cleaned and inspected every 2 days in that five year period without fail as he was willing to show his tank at almost any time during the day so it was kept in pristine condition

Only happened to me once. Jumped out of bed, landed in water. Tank was on other side of house. That was a long night :)

Mind boggling loss of life. The financial hit is another thing. All that water exited his home rather quickly thanks to forward thinking when the support systems were first put in place. His insurance only covers damage to the home. The tank and its contents are all on his dime.It appears that he had just settled in approximately 100 fish from another system that was shut down.Absolutely crushing news.
