Well I have taken the plunged and order a Redsea REEFER 450, that is a 90 gal rimless display tank with a 25 Gal sump. It only comes with DT, sump and stand so now to find all the equipment needed.

My goal here is to keep if very quiet, and looking good (even on the outside) so that it fits into my living room.

I am trying to keep the cost lower by finding some used pieces of equipment. I have started my research and trying to find some deals. I have been out of the hobby for 12 years and a lot has changed. Used to run a 50 Gal reef tank, with a homemade skimmer, homemade overflow and homemade lighting too! I think this time I will let the professionals do the building!

Enjoy your build, I'll be following along. I almost decided on the same tank before changing my mind to custom.

What do you plan on keeping in it?

Besides water? LOL I am thinking of a mixed reef, nothing too far outside the box. I love corals but only have experience with soft coral in the past so going to try to up that a notch. As soon as I saw the redsea reefer, I knew that it was the tank for me, such clean lines!

The waiting is killing me...but lots of fun putting together the equipment...so far I have nothing!...but getting close on a few deals.

PM me if you need any particular equipment starting up, I may have stuff for you. :)

I had considered it but right when I was ready to order they jacked up the price because of the USD/loonie exchange rate. Blessing in disguise though, as I was able to custom order something that I would truly be happy with from Denny at Concept, for a fraction of the price. Feel free to check out my build thread if you have time

That's going to be a nice tank. Red sea quality is awesome.

I just setup a RSM S500 for an office and I'm still shocked at the quality of their work (although I don't agree with their c skimmer)

Made some good progress today and picked up some equipment from 3 different Canreef people. I now have a vertex illumine 260 with wireless control (there is lightning in my kitchen now!) a phosban reactor with a small pump, and a RO/DI system.

The best thing about today was the people in the hobby that I met, great people willing to spend some time to educate me and help me out!

It is a start, the hunt is on for a good quiet skimmer, and a return pump. OH and an Apex and gyre pump.

I bought a new sicce 5 for a return pump. Not sure if I going to keep it as I ran it in the bath tub for a few minutes and thought it was a bit loud. Does anybody have any experience with this?

Got a line on an Apex system now. So most of the main components are covered. Still would like to find a gyre.

Picked up the Apex. Just have to learn how to use it! Seems like it will help make my tank a little easier to manage. I am thinking of getting the Apex automatic feeder, as I am away a lot.

So I broke down and call J & L aquatics yesterday to see if they have a ship date on my tank....They said they are still hoping for the end of April. A little more patience is needed it seems.

Don't worry about it. Waiting is all part of the process. You wait for the tank. You wait for the cycle and then to finish the cycle. You wait for your fish. You wait for your coral. Your tank is full. Now you wait for it to grow or something bad happens and the waiting starts again. Lots of waiting in this hobby. Relax. Have a drink. Enjoy the wait.

True, I have been waiting 12 years already....so what is a few more weeks? Besides I don't really have an alternative!

Picked up a Gyre 150 that I have been looking for off of a fellow Canreef member. Very happy about that. Thought that I was done on equipment but just remembered that I need an Apex automatic feeder!

Okay skip ahead a full year! Yes I have had water in my tank for a year now. I have had a great time adding things, and a bad time killing things. I have met a lot of people in the hobby and made friends here at Canreef. My tank never seems static, as I am always changing something! No regrets one year ing

Get a photobucket or flikr account and upload your pics there. Copy the img link and paste here, using the 'mountain on the postcard' icon. Easy peasy.

In an attempt to move from "The worst tank update ever" into second worst spot, I have now dug up some pictures from the last year, created a photobucket account and will attempt to make it all work...not my strong point (I don't have any strong points) well I am good at sarcasm.

Thanks. I have now added a 1/2 HP Arctica chiller into the return pump line. That way there will always be water circulating through it. Last summer the tank temp hit 84/85 some days as I don't have central air conditioning (like most West coasters). At that time there was very little in the tank but now with a pretty good load of mixed reef I want to ensure temperature stability. It may only run a dozen days a year but I don't want to cook the tank.
