Me and my big mouth  Yes, over the summer I promised an open house meeting and in another thread boB reminded me of this promise. Thanks, boB :agrue:

Looking at the calendar, I'm thinking of either October 17 or 24 (both are Sundays) in the afternoon, say between 2:30 pm and 5:30 pm. How does that sound?

Bob I
09-14-2004, 04:18 PM
That certainly sounds fine with me. That gives me enough time to make some pictures of my currently available zoos so that people can tell me what to bring up.

Quinn

I move you hold it a week earlier if possible, over the Thanksgiving weekend.

Then I can come!

Beverly
09-14-2004, 04:43 PM
Okay, to accommodate Quinn, I'd be willing to look at Sunday the 10th as well  It'll be up to everyone to decide which Sunday is the best for everyone.

OOOooo! I'm itching to come! Never been to a meet (didn't really have much of tank the last time one was held!) I am down for any time, anywhere, I will do my best to be there. Just to meet the whole 'gang' face-to-face would be fantastic!

Count me in!~

To make things a little more interesting, how about November 7 or 21, both Sundays? That way Jim can make it, exams will be over, Beth can probably come, though, Quinn may not be able to make it :frown: In November, we might have our Christmas tree up

Quinn

Yeah would have to be Thanksgiving or Christmas for me. But don't put yourselves out.

I've never been to a meet so I might have to come to this one! I have no life so any day works for me, although November would be better, I might actually have a tank that I can call a reef by then...

Quinn
09-15-2004, 02:39 AM
Having a reef is not a requirement. At this point in time all I have is a bucket of dead sand and a lot of equipment I no longer need.

Beverly
09-15-2004, 03:07 PM
Okay, let's start again because I am getting confused

The following are dates that are possible for us to host. Let me know all possible dates, in order of preference, that are best for each of you. I'll tally them up and the date that has the most people who can come will be the day we meet  All are Sundays between 2:30 pm and 5:30 pm:

Oct 10
Oct 17
Oct 24
Nov 7
Nov 21
Nov 28

And Quinn is correct that you don't have to have a reef to attend

Oct 17 & Nov 28 - no preference.

Bob I
09-15-2004, 03:52 PM
No real preference for me except that earlier is probably better due to the possibility of snow. The early dates may not be good as I have to get pictures up of the zoos I can bring. I expect to do that this weekend.

Oct 10...

shotzee
09-16-2004, 11:47 PM
It really doesn't matter that much because the meeting won't take the entire day, so would be able to at least stop in any of those dates. It just seems like everyone can't pick the same date, so I don't want to put up another order of dates in another preference to confuse things.

Skimmerking

Bev it's going to depend on your job and job title. Where i'm in the Artillery and there is no place for the Artillery in Edmonton.!

But I'm looking at the side of DP detention Barracks for the Army is in Edmonton. There I can go to work and get transfrd there to the City of champions..

Well the car is heated, so the zoos won't be the problem. I am concerned about possible road conditions that time of year.

And Jim, I am not sure if I can fake being ill so STARS could take me to Beverly's place. Especially with a big box of zoos that need to be kept warm. :BIG:

Beverly
09-19-2004, 10:24 PM
boB,

The weather in both Oct and Nov in this part of the country can lousy, so there is no way to predict which Sunday will have good road conditions. I'm just hoping for the best for that day

Correct me if I am wrong, but I think Al flies a military chopper? Geez, can I go for a ride

Anyway, who can make it for Sunday, November 28, 2:30 to 5:30? Everyone can bring husbands, wives, girlfriends, boyfriends, so please let me know if you are bringing someone. I need a body count so I can talk to the caterer across the hall to see what he can whip up for us

Bob I

I plan on making the plugs this weekend, and will still bring them down to Calgary with me on the 8th of Nov. I would like to see the tanks again.

I may have throw a spanner into the works as the English say. I am becoming seriously worried about the lateness of the meeting, and the demands placed on my stock. I am now wondering if I could come up to Edmonton well before the scheduled meeting to drop off the zoos
There would have to be someone who would be willing to hold the zoos so that other Edmontonians could pick them up at their leisure. Or find some other work around.

Yeah, it's like over two months away, so I understand your position. I'll bring up the subject again late in October so folks can decide then. With the meeting being so late in November, we'll probably have our Christmas tree up by then and have some Christmas cake on hand

Also, parking is at a premium downtown, so bring all your friends in one car so you can find a parking space

Now you have me worried. I am expected tp try and find a parking space possibly blocks away, and then try to lug a big box of zoos to your place, which I have never been to. Maybe now while it is still a long time awy, we could find me a place to go to, and park there, and hitch a ride  . Preferably close to where I enter the city.

I'd be happy to give you a ride... and you could park on the sidewalk near my house (there's a huge stretch of fence and its a safe neighbourhood). Its a 10 minute drive from Gateway blvd to my house and the route is quite direct... so you won't even spend that much time driving around a different city... though going to Bev's place from my place takes about 30 minutes.

Hi, I would like to attend as well.

I have some frags that I could bring:

1. Blue tip Stag - fast grower $15:00 for frags. I have lots of this one!
2. Violet tipped fuzzy mushroom (flourecent green with actinics) with some purple tip digitata growing on the same rock $20.00
3. Purple tip Digitata $10.00 (needs 10K lighting or better)
4. Green Digitata $10.00

All of these grew OK under PC lighting but took off with MH.
Will trade for other acros. PM me with what you have.

PM me if you want anything and I will put your name on the bag. All unmounted except the mushroom.

There now is a real possibility of my coming up. I have relatively few zoos available. There are some pictures in the Calgary forum in the thread "someone sell me some zoos" or something like that. The only problem now is that I have to be at the Hardisty Center in the late afternoon on the 27th. Then I will treat myself to a hotel. (maybe someone can find a reasonable one in the area, and make a reservation for me) Then on the 28th I could come to the meet, and return to Calgary in the evening.
If I bring some zoos the buyer will have to meet me on Saturday to pick up.

Quoted from a post I made in the DIY section a while ago...

You can also go to Bartle&Gibson 13475-Fort rd 472-2850.They sell
M57 ballast for 62.70(175wt)
M58 74.25(250wt)
M59 75.00(400wt)
They also carry the mogule sockets.I did my own lighting with the m58 and I didn't burn anything down in the process  Keep in mind some of the magnetic ballasts come with a light coat of oil, which when heated up stinks like hell.It goes away in a couple of days.

I got two sockets and a 36" reflector from J&L.

If I can wire this thing up without frying myself, I'm sure anyone can. If you have any questions about wiring up the ballast, just ask. There are quite a few people here who have wired up MH ballasts.

Just a reminder......

If you are picking up frags, please bring your own containers and/or bags as we don't have any on hand. We do have elastics and frag glue, though, if any are needed

Also, sorry to the latecomers who have asked to come. Our apartment condo is going to be packed with those already on the list and we cannot accomodate more bodies  Hopefully someone with larger digs will host another meeting in the near future :smilecol:

What works for conatiners?? small cooler, zip lock, tupperware??

If anyone has big salt buckets they no longer need I could use some for mixin water if you could bring them and I'll pick them up after the meeting so we don't fill Bev's house

Plastic bags (non-leaking of course), rubber bands, plastic tubs with lids, etc. will work. Coolers are convient but not really needed.

I am afraid a couple of things conspired to keep me from coming to the meeting.
#1 - I had to make a couple of frags last night to satisfy the Edmonton people. Since I want to give frags time to settle down before I sell them there is obviously no time.

#2 - This is the biggie. I was unable to motivate myself, and started to see large obstacles, ie. having to drive for four hours in the dark.

If someone had been coming along for the drive, it might have happened. Someone beating on the door at eight AM saying "let's go" would have done the trick.

So I am sorry it did not happen. Perhaps in the future when conditions are better it will happen.

I'm sorry I couldn't make it Bev. Our daughter ended up needing to be picked up in red deer so she had our vehicle. I thought this was ok because Bob was supposed to meet at my place. I was wondering where he was and low and behold when I look here I see where he is. Stuff happens I guess. I hope to meet you guys soon!

Thanks from me too, Bev and Chris. The Tanks looked great. I still like sand on the bottom, but I reallly liked the look in your tanks, especially some of the nice open rockwork in the big tank.

Also, I want to thank Al again for the Cat's Paw frag. It looks great in my tank.

Bev

Thanx for your gracious hospitality! That was a great afternoon.

The BB tanks looked awesome. They are very different from what I'm used to and despite the very simple set up (contrary to the many
high tech "heart lung machine" set ups I've seen)the corals/fish
were vibrant and healthy. Seems to me this method may have some
advantages when it comes to maintenance and nutrient control.

I hope my suggestion to "formalize" the Edmonton Reef Club will eventually be acted on by members of the club. It may even be possible to do so within the existing Edmonton Aquarium Club to reduce the amount of effort needed to get it off the ground. Regular face to face meetings/workshops would go a long way to help grow the hobby and would be extremely useful to newbies and "old salts" alike. The increased exchange in information would reduce costly mistakes and reduce the pressures on wild stocks paying with their lives for those mistakes! The exchange of frags and equipment will also reduce costs for everyone. In the end the hobby will grow and EVERYONE, including retailers win! In addition card carrying club members makes it easier for retailers to offer discounts, as there is power in numbers!

Thanx again!

cheers!
T

P.S. The food was delicious!

Too bad you weren't here, Quinn. You could have packed away SEVERAL sandwiches as well as the delicious shortbread and fruitcake, not that there's anything WRONG with eating fruitcake    (Oh, oh..... too much Seinfeld  )
