So I took the plunge... selling all my freshwater stuffs, bought a new house and a beautiful custom 92" x 21" x 22" 3-sided starphire peninsula tank from concept! here it is near end of construction.

Also had them make me a custom U-Flow Sump to accomodate the drain and return on the same side of the sump. I am plumbing the sump into the furnace room about 6ft away.

I bought a reef octopus hy-10000w, with 1" output... they didnt have it in stock so i got a deal on the hy-12500w. Great i thought, totally spaced on output... now 1.25" return output, thus the quickly rigged plumbing coming out of the pump.

The basement is all finished and the bar is the new stand! Just need to reinforce it...

wow that was a fast cycle, about 6 minutes... no im kidding i have wanted to make a tank journal for a while and now i have time, the tank is now cycled and i have set up some lights. Yes, some lights.. i wanted to go with radions as the didplay colours are fantastic (even if i have to have a bit of my tank unlit for a while). So at the moment i only have 1 radion g3 pro running and plans to have 4 in the end, but will slowly upgrade. I plan on keeping softies and LPS for at least a year so im not too worried.

Added 2 clownfish, and a golden rabbit fish with some soft corals

i got another radion xr15 pro which came with 120 degree lenses, and i already have them on the 30. im trying to squeeze as much light out of these as possible.

i came home today to find the spots of brown algae had turned into covering a bunch of the rocks... reduced light by an hour and some intensity, mad big water change and some more snails should do..

ok algae/diatom bloom is over, parameters are good, tank looks awesome.... exept one of my radions (xr15pro) seems to be dimmer than the others... probably need to calibrate it, anybody know how to calibrate from apex?

How was it moving that tank, maneuvering it through doorways etc? How many people to carry it?

It wasnt so bad with the help i had, we had 4 guys: 2 large, 1 old and me (not large). Used a flat dolly for across mainfloor, then slid it down the stairs on the plywood base. I was lucky to have a tall enough staircase to stand it on end and no tight turns.

Well i thought i was going to hold off on sps for a while, but i think ive got my flow dialed in to accomodate high flow areas and low flow areas aswell as low light areas. Im using gyres to have a vertical top to bottom flow around the outside and a jebao 15 to break it up in the middle on one end. So the end of the peninsula is a bit calmer, less light but still nothing settling on the bottom.

wow i love your rainbow monti. they always seem to do their rainbowing on the growth edges from what i've observed. yours is rainbow in the interior as well.

I was worried about the depth and aquascaping but it is plenty of space... height is great too, I can reach the bottom! The hardest/best part is having it look good from both sides.

Im going to add a radion freshwater tomorrow.... i looked into the difference, and without the green or red on either, the FW is about 70% of the xr15pro in terms of wattage. instead of cool white, there is neutral white. Should work out.

ok, added a freshwater radion... what a pain in the ass. At first reeflink couldnt distinguish the saltwater lights from the FW in terms of programming...bunch of restarts later it now knows there is a new light.Next it wouldnt let me add a FW light to my aquarium with XR pros.. pfft.. lame. Had to make a separate aquarium and copy the schedule. To Match XR pros at 35% the best i could, i set the FW radion to 30% of the neutral and full of everything besides red and green, overall power 65%... looks similar... well see.

Right now they are about 9 and bit inches from the water, also with 120 degree lenses. On the right theres actually 2 together, 1 xr15 pro and a xr15Freshwater lol, softies seem to like it. I need one more on the left and i should be good for all corals in some spots..

your tank plan looks awesome, an idea for a bright coral (there are some red ones) instead of having to hand feed each sun coral every day, you could try a Cynarina.. this is mine after hand feeding, (maybe twice a week).

Not too much, the emperor likes to nip at the edges of the zoa pieces and some other soft polyps, nothing nice so far! (knock on wood). The others ignore them completely. I made sure i only bought fish i saw eating suppliments and were doing well. The emperor loves pellets.

ok now he is a problem lol, what a jerk fish.. started to eat anything fleshy, aswell as kick up sand and scare all the smaller fish. I swear he almost got a chromis..he was returned.

Lesson learned, sort of, decided to try a less destructive fish and still play with fire. I exchanged for a Tomini Tang, a Powder Brown Tang, a bi color blenny and the fire - a coris wrasse...I know he might eat my clean up crew and move stuff at the worst, i can glue and replace crew. i have heard some dont bother anything, we will see how badly i get burnt.

Ouch! That's too bad, an emperor is such a beauty...at least it's returned to a place where it won't get your corals.

From what I've read (I have no experience with this) PBTs are very ich-prone. Hope yours is a nice and healthy fish! :biggrin:

acheived a long milestone, decided to celebrate with a doser for 2 part. I went with another dos because down the road i want to dose the main zeovit stuff, so with the .1ml accuracy and easy scheduling through apex i feel it will be worth it...mainly apex scheduing as i want to be able to leave for a week at a time in the future.

My calcium is high, could be the tester (Hanna) so 500-600, still high. Tonight i will dose only alk when ph drops at about 10 or so to bring calcium down slightly, then i will be able to dose calc and alk and figure out what my tank is using on a daily bases. is this correct?

Adding Alk won't bring your calcium down by anything noticeable , it will only raise Alk. if you want to bring your calcium down then just don't dose anything and let it fall , as consumption happens in line with alkalinity your calcium with be use up in Ratio.

Once your calcium is where you want it then start dosing it again , dont dose on calcium numbers dose on alkalinity numbers if dosing 2 part.

What I mean is when your calcium drops don't chase calcium numbers but allow calcium to be dosed fairly equally with Alk.

Most 2 part products have the dry weight of the products already measured out for you , for examplpe your part a and your part b both have the same amount of liquid and same size bottle, but the dry weights would have been different , the idea is to replace and dose both equal amounts at the same time.

Alk and calcium are used up in a fixed ratio meaning that if you were to use up 1 dkh of Alk it would be impossible from a consumption point of view to use 50ppm of calcium , the ratio for calcium consumption is about 10% of Alk or for every 1.4 dkh drop its 20ppm of calcium and about 1-2 ppm of mg.

Yes, you are correct. Calcium will not drop a lot, but it will a little. You should raise alkalinity to get closer to balanced calcium and alkalinity ratio. It should always be balanced, but calcium at 550 ppm is off the chart, and I wouldn't raise alkalinity more than about 10 or 11 dKH with that many SPS in the tank, and I wouldn't increase more than 1 dKH per 24 hours. Then dose neither until they fall together down to where you want them. You will need to make sure you magnesium is at least 1300-1400 ppm to have elevated calcium and alkalinity. If magnesium is low then you risk calcium carbonate precipitation (aka snow in your tank).

Although I agree with you that it could be the Hanna Calcium Checker. I find it very easy to get a false high reading on that device.

Alkalinity dropped slightly, seems legit. The calcium, If the Hanna is off by up to 150 ppm should be balanced and was before, 350-500 today and 550 - 400 yesterday. Im going to say im near the bottom of the suggested range for reefkeeping and pretty close to natural seawater as far as calc and alk are concerned.

Tonight i will dose 50ml of each, as per starting recommended dose for 200 gal, alk when ph begins to drop and calc before lights come on.

calcium 570 -hanna, up from 374 , this is not accurate at all, i dont think i will test calcium regularly until i get a better tester, any suggestions??

Alkalinity - 134 ppm - 2.68 meq/l - 7.5 dkh, up from 7.22 dkh

I like where these are now, i will change the dose to 21.8 ml based on Alkalinity consumption of 3.5 ppm without dose, then a 8ppm total rise including daily usage with 50ml dose, thus 21.8 to cover the 3.5ppm use daily. I think this should be a good first adjustment.

That was the hope, but i decided to use the bar as a tank stand... the bar top came in at 21.5 wide and 92 long. So close...

We are thinking of another tank upstairs in the dining room at 73"x24"x30", build thread to come soonish as this one will probably take a year or so just to set up as i havent even finished this one...

New plans to automate new saltwater top off:

have a float switch at top and bottom of NSW container hooked up to apex breakout box, also a solenoid plugged into apex to turn on and off depending on water level. so bottom float switches off, solenoid opens and fills up until top float switch closes, also mechanical float switch on top just in case. All i have to do is add salt once a week. I just have figure out how to attach the float switches to the container of NSW (currently 25g garbage can) without spending money on magnectic probe holders or something. I might just wait and get a 50gal cube with spots built in for floats.... any ideas?

update, ick and some dead fish...... all from the same store..im sure of it... actually now that i think of it every coral i got from this shop also died within a month. I wont say which one, but i will give credit to the shops which i have bought the rest of the tanks inhabitants and corals from (which are all alive and well, even with some ich in the tank now and i suspect possibly flatworm).The fish i got from concept is strong, healthy and eating well, as well as everything from wai's ive had no trouble, all healthy and happy fish and corals.

Now what to do about the situation, obviusly wont be buying anything from that shop, i have ich....maybe flatworm....*&^$. I have been using polyplabs medic for 3 days now, another 7 to go. Its a water conditioner as well as a reef safe ich medicine. You cannot run UV or carbon when medicating so i suspect any of the sick fish perished when i dropped the uv. All others have recovered now but i want to do the 10 days to rid it of ich. has anyone tried this before?

you added all this within 1 month of starting up a new tank. with a tank that large its extremely hard to get your parameters to balance out. Even if you did get this sorted out it takes a long time for this body of water to level its self out. Having said that once you started adding all the fish the bio in the tnak is climbing and climbing the ammonia , nitrites and then to nitrates would build fast unless you are changing the water super fast. What about the sand bed new sand I don't see it taking 1 month to completely alive and working taking away the NO3. But with a tank are you not running a QT tank. you have a lot of nice stuff on there. but however have a UV light. its great and all but you need to source the ick from the start with a QT tank and then run UV light. nice tank BTW. but have the ick and the flat worms its a lot to deal with.
If you can get some flatworm EXIT I would use that.
as for the ick well lots of garlic if you cant take the fish that are infected out. if not I know a few people of tried draining the tank down to nothing hardly and taking the fish out that way Aquattro has done this and it worked .

Yes i moved fast. like really fast....guilty, The cycle took about 12 days, as I cured dry rock in DT, then 100% Water change, added all live sand, live rock and a ton of cured pukani, plus Start Up and zeovit system. I know a few others who have setup tanks this way in this short amount of time. I beleive adding fish earlier on, with a bio digest/bioptim regiment has helped. My parameters have never been bad exept for during the initial cycle when i added live sand, rock and dry rock. Im pretty sure the ich came from the PB Tang, now long gone his legacy remains...

update - upon further reading on polyp labs medic, it seems in most cases the fish will either perish during treatment and succomb to ich or they will be ich free long term. I beleive this is what has happened so far, the weak immune system fish have died, all others seem to be ich free. Im going to be using medic for at least 10 days to be sure. As for flatworm i only suspect because my Clown Tang has had increasing black spots since i turned off the UV for medic treatment and 2 of my smaller acros have perished. I used the UV for a few hours yesterday and will for a few this week till done the treatment, the clown already seems happier..

it sure is.. depends if i see any more ich on any fish, all that remain have no ich at all. If any get it again, straight to the QT. Im going to continue this medic treatment of my DT for 20 days total to be sure. All new fish and corals will live in there for a while too , prob 6 weeks... getting rid of the sand, too much challenge for its value.

all i can say is, never buy sand with small shells in it.... takes forever to syphon out witout using a 1" hose and sucking up everything.

Looks like we are fated to go through the same things. I'm setting it up to be fallow for the 72 days. Saddest thing ever, getting a new 8 footer then seeing no fish for 2+ months. :lol:

Well, do it once, do it right. I want my fish, current and future, to be all healthy and happy. No point tossing them in now and seeing them succumb to sickness.

My corals and inverts will get a LOT of attention. :wink:

Don't forget to account for the rock in the QT absorbing some of the medication when dosing, so if you are using Cupramine for instance to combat ick, you should test the copper level to make sure you have the right dose in there.

Thanks, ya looking back i overlooked the sand and zeovit... acutally the sand all together has been a pain. As far as i know, and from seeing some others tanks all running zeo and uv, you can run uv and zeo as long as they are placed stratigically. The free floating bacteria from zeo when pumped/agitated (the mulm produced on the zeolites in reactor) is the food for the corals and also what UV will kill. I figure As long as the output from Zeo is after UV in sump, the tank will still receive the nutrients/bacteria. Now this is my opinon and what im trying based on what others are doing and seeing their tanks.

Yeah the QT needs much more attention than a large DT for sure..

Ive got about a tenth of the sand out and everything seems to be happier..in the process of rescaping everything, i didnt plan out enough of each height.

I used tropic eden reef flakes in my tank which is running with zeo and used the same sand in the RSM s500 I'm building at my friends office

Best sand ever and its really difficult to blow around, worth looking into that if you want sand and premium aquatics sells it if you're interested

spent 4+ hours moving coral and rock, siphoning sand and rescaping rock... its levelish for now.. i kind of like it, i figure theres room to change this way. Plus there is way more room for corals and better flow. About half the sand is out! F yes.

Finally lit from end to end, added a xr30 last night. Having issues programming again, no surprise... It seems the easiest and least frustrating way to add a radion to a group of radions is to start from scratch and create a new group on ecosmartlive and do them all overone at a time. Lame but saves frustration ad doing it ths way in the end.

the more sand that leaves, the cleaner and happier everything is, almost all types of algae are dissapearing, small brown/green patches on rock and sand, and the glass is finally not needing a clean everyday..

I would keep an eye on that Red Coris Wrasse. He may be fine now, but they do tend to to get quite destructive as they age. They naturally love invertebrates :sad:

Curious, do your two mandarins eat prepared foods are have you determined that you have a large enough pod population for them?

the madarins were doing fine, lots of pods after feeding dt's phyto and getting lots of pieces of rock and coral from tanks with fat mandarins.. until i had dosed with polyp lab for some ich releif, but after a few days of treatment i would see dead pods floating around. a few weeks later and only one mandarin remains, i think food was limited and the fought it out, they fought anyway anytime they saw each other..should have had only one.

as for the wrasse, hes angry about the sand leaving.. hope he doesnt take it out on the crabs.

Im convinced the routine zeo dosing, daily water changes and good lighting has made it possible in 2 months...loving every minute.Although my wallet is thin for some reason...

Just a word of advise - I would be careful where you put the rainbow monti as it can quickly out grow & over grow many of your other corals and be a pain so I recommend giving it it's own area away from the other sps if possible. the carnation does well with medium flow, as long as the anenome doesnt cover is with more slime.. so i have just been letting it catch its own food. i have tons of pods again and i never miss a dose. I just got the christmas tree, its pretty cool although tempermental so far. if you even bump it, it retracts for a day or so.. well see what happens with what im dosing.

here is my dosing schedule for reference:

daily-
10ml coral snow at night
2 oz dt's phyto, worked up from 1 oz
5ml zeo coral booster
5ml k balance
2 ml zeostart3
8 drops kaliumiodid-fluor (potassium lodide flouride concentrate)

So far, this stuff is my go to..


Careful with that salt and zeovit... That salt is not something to use in a ULNS environment, its really high on most parameters, most importantly the alk which should be around 7 with zeo; also mg and calcium is a little high for zeo.

Best salt to.use with zeo are Red Sea Blue Bucket and the KZ salt

Good to know, I was doing daily water changes with this salt and i was wondering why my tank was only consuming 6 ml or so of calc and alk. I had switched the daily waterchange to my smaller tank and my large tank was dropping alk quick, like .5 DKH per day:( and i didnt notice till i was at 5.9 DKH. Ive been sowly bringing it up with more dosing, now at 30ml/day and raising .25 DKH or so each day.

Water change today, from 6.16 to 6.6 with 10G change. As long as i adjust my dosing and make sure i change similar amounts of water and check alk before water change i should be able to keep it steady for the rest of this salt. Although it may be more cost effective to dose more salt than chemicals or maybe steadier water parameters using the salt as a measured dose?...

tank is doing much better, low alk and mag was stunting growth. this stag has took off, not getting much taller but lots of branches.

last check:
Alk - 7 dkh
mag - 1310
calc - 480 ( hanna, pfft..)

havent checked phosphate or ammonia in a month, havent ever had a high reading since first cycle, not sure if i will anytime soon...

Looking good, glad to have helped with the salt selection :)

You should periodically test for po3 no3 as you want some in there as you don't want to starve the coral in a ULNS system
I think target po4 is 0.05 and no3@ .2

I'm a bit stuck.with my zeo as my nitrates are 0 and phosphates are .08 and in order to.drop po I have to raise nitrates a bit, so always good to check.

Picked up some really nice colonies today from fellow canreefer globaldesigns, awsome guy, superb deal on his tank shutdown. These are now the largest pieces in my tank and also the largest pieces i have transported...about 5 or so gallons of water for the monster monti colony and acro colony topper......

Well despite the passenger seat getting totally soaked on the way home all went well. Until i got rear ended...... funny Rick and I were just talking about how ill be fine as long as I dont rear end anyone. About 5 blocks from my house some guy wasnt paying attention and bumps me at the stop sign, no damage, just a fender bender, old truck who cares...But..the Colony rolled ( like 12x 10x 12 size ) in the 20 gal tub and a few of the nice monti shelves broke off...super bummed...The guy felt bad for my truck, lol i was checking the coral while he was checking the vehicles. Priorities... oh well it'll grow back. Anyway finally got home and got them in the tank...more pics tomorrow..

switched up my gyres, I turned one horizontal.. so one is vertical and the other horozontal both on the same end running in opposite directions.. i want to post a video of the coral snow to show the flow of water i think this change was well needed! sps seems a little happier. Anyone else running 2 gyres on one end? the flow is kind of like a 3d figure 8..

I didnt realize you had 2 aswell, Im running the vertical one on forward at 20% and the horozontal one at 50% in reverse.. Flow is pretty goodould say no dead areas but it does slow down in the opposite end as the gyres, which works as i put all the lps and soft corals at that end.

Interesting. Maybe I'll give that a shot.

Currently have both horizontal, one at overflow end at about 40% short pulses, and the other end at 60% constant. Some lesser flow area still, but my tank doesn't have SPS at the moment.

new treasures, has been a fruitfull weekend(mon/tues) found a huge tube anenome, a leopard wrasse and super thin pavona coral (similar to ORA's mint pavona) i think its a pavona frondifera or potato chip coral. hope it colours nicely..

awsome find today at oceans, a 5" Australian harlequin tusk wrasse, this guy is awsome. He ate about an hour after he was in the new tank, and was cruzing around all night... I was anticipating him to be relatively calm, timid and hide for a while..Athough he is the biggest fish.

update, ick and some dead fish...... all from the same store..im sure of it... actually now that i think of it every coral i got from this shop also died within a month. I wont say which one, but i will give credit to the shops which i have bought the rest of the tanks inhabitants and corals from (which are all alive and well, even with some ich in the tank now and i suspect possibly flatworm).The fish i got from concept is strong, healthy and eating well, as well as everything from wai's ive had no trouble, all healthy and happy fish and corals.

Now what to do about the situation, obviusly wont be buying anything from that shop, i have ich....maybe flatworm....*&^$. I have been using polyplabs medic for 3 days now, another 7 to go. Its a water conditioner as well as a reef safe ich medicine. You cannot run UV or carbon when medicating so i suspect any of the sick fish perished when i dropped the uv. All others have recovered now but i want to do the 10 days to rid it of ich. has anyone tried this before?

Pm me the place hell I don't want the ick either

does not matter where you buy your fish , there is always a chance of getting it . its up to you to look for the healthiest fish and if you are not qt'ing at least to observe you are running a risk of adding something to your system. I have bought stuff from ocean's , gold's, wai's , concepts , and reef wonderland had good success at all of them also have had a few things not make it just the way things go .

Fully agree, sure i was angry at that shop but in the end it was my responsibility to qt and make sure the fish was healthy, nobody put the fish in for me..

thanks everyone, im surprised at some of the shots that come out of my phone.. here are some more... Im so happy with the placement of my tank, i really had no choice but the sun in the evening makes for sweet photo moments. Added more fish, more chromis, at 30 now. I think. no casualties but hard to count lol i dont thinki will add anymore. might look crowded.

I have been thinking lately and watching my tank, and it dawned on me, i have only ever had a max of 20 snails and 15 crabs. not much of a clean up crew...plus i dont expect many to be around with 4 large wrasse.. So ive decided that i will go without a crew all together. The remaining crabs and snails will be food and i will be the clean up crew, vacuum more often and dose bio mate and zeozym on a regular. I also added my absolute favourite fish that will most definetly eat snails and crabs..

plumbing done, made water and cut eggcrate.. then i came to how i was going to hold up the eggcrate.. i had some branch in my nsw bucket so i put a few pieces in the bottom with a few snails. i really like how it turned out.

besides the algae issues, the tank has some good growth on some colonies i thought were never going to grow...I found some tiny clams that im positive werent there before growing on some sps colonies, and 1" long sponges in my overflow.

found the culprit for my algae outbreak... i had changed some apex outlets and based out on the doser...it was only on when the heaters were on :redface: so my doser wasnt dosing my zeostart consistently, and with the heat wave no heaters meant no doser. dosing zeostart for certin now... cyano gone, gha almost gone, diatoms gone, bubble ....rampant...

tank is doing great, lots of growth, healthy fish. Some new tangs, a chocolate tang with white fins and white on his face, sold as a chocolate hybrid. My Maori wrasse ate some new additions, ate an allens chromis as i ploped him in the tank :( took a chunk out of another...so i moved them to the 30G quickly...called the injured one chunky...

yeah the wrasse is the only ive ever seen, its a tripletail maori wrasse. so far pretty calm until he saw an allens chromis - seriously shocked i have 15 or so chromis and he doesnt bother them, the shiny reflective blue must have been a favourite for him, he went beserk when i put 2 in..

Did you add the new Chromis after lights off when all the fish were sleeping? You may have a different reaction if you do it that way. Fish tend to think that action at the water surface will involve feeding, and will gulp down new fish when they might not if they weren't already in feed-mode.

for the most part I use my nikon d5500 with a cheap macro lens and use the sports setting because im to lazy to turn off the pumps everytime i see a good shot. I take lots of pictures, less than half turn out.

Ok so i got new bulbs for this mh fixture.... one already blew and cracked...im wondering ive done something wrong or faulty bulb. Its a maristar 2x250w mh with old huge ballast(rated for 2x250w) and 2x39w t5ho, all good for 3 days and now this afternoon only one is on, and other has big crack on bulb (hamilton 20k de 250w).

So i went to get some new tires for the gfs jeep this morning, and after i checked in and was waiting, apex fusion decided to connect again ( been a month of on and off all day, ****ty wireless and cant update unless i pull it out and bring to modem).

at about 5 am apex simply turned everything on, regardless of what the settings were, even when i got home the apex unit itself said lights off and they were all on...

co2 to my calcium reactor was just flowing away, brought ph in reactor down an extra .1 and the heaters were roaring and brought temp up..

My Apex has been doing the same thing, not quite that extent though. My ato wouldnt turn off even though all settings were right (luckily my sump holds more than my ato for just that reason), when lights off it says on, and when I try and turn them on manually it doesnt even work. Not even with the controller. It has been a little bit better since the update, but it still has issues. kinda scary to think what could happen if the apex did fail and went undetected for to long.

ill probably issue a service ticket and see what neptune says, but im reluctant to use it at all, if they cant provide a reliable product for 1000+ dollars im gonna be ****ed, my livestock is worth too much to have a premium product kill everything...not sure what to at this point with winter coming. do i trust the temp switch on the heaters themselves, or do i trust apex. sigh..co2 feels alot more dangerous now, have to dial in the bubble count alot closer now.

They are supposd to have a high chance of being reef safe, i dont have any more crabs because of some wrasse, so in that aspect of reef safe not sure.

yeah ive been insisting that i only have pumps on one end.. and adding some pretty demanding sps i need pretty heavy flow on one end while the "slow" end is better for gonis and some lps i want to keep still. I dont need 4, but i dont vacuum much dietrus off the bottom anymore lol. 3 are vertical running contant and one horozontal making waves at the top, gives a nice shimmer and the sps on top are happy. Tangs love it and the caves are clean.

built a floating canopy today to try and organize lighting and reflect more back into the tank as opposed to all over the room. While were at it might as well add some halides, a 250W for the sps end and a 150w for the Lps end. It turned out pretty good, still need to put the t5s back up.

I think I see a red coris wrasse in there. How has he been? My last one was fairly large. He was destructive as heck. Would flip rocks and corals, ate tonnes of hermits. I would love to get another one.
