View Full Version : The Why Oh Why...38 stairs, 290 Tank Build

Why did I do this to myself..Ugh I could not just leave well enough alone. I saw Dusty16s 290 gal for sale on here and the twofootitis disease hit me...For those wondering what twofootitis is, it is a term boaters use when seeing/wanting a larger boat, as boat 2 ft longer makes a huge difference to the size inside etc. I actually, for good reasons, talked myself out of buying this tank twice, before succumbing to the the price and twofootitis.

So three of us hauled into the back of the truck yesterday. That was the easy work...

Hmmm, how the hell am I going to get this up to the house, was the burning question that I had been asking myself since seeing it for sale on Canreef....Not only that, but who would even consider helping me...Friends and family would picture the front of my house and think to themselves, "Not a chance in hell", but politely tell me they had prior commitments or else they would certainly be there for me! Uh-huh...sure...

Yep, that is the front of my house...38 stairs, and 3 landings from the street to my front door...Now you know why I talked myself out of this twice!

Now you know why the title states "why oh why"!!

Plywood sled and winch maybe? That looks seriously dangerous for anyone involved good luck!

Edit: it's already on a sled! Sled looks too wide tho :(

lol, Yes, just what I imagined my friends and family said when I begged for help Mr reeferfulton :).
But that is why I lend my son and his friends money. I never expect the money repaid in cash, but they know they will have to pay and pay dearly they will this time (says with a sinister tone). Oh son.... remember when I lent you and your buddy a few hundred to pay rent?
Huh? When was that Dad? he replies.
Oh about 6 months ago...:) Time to pay up son..I have a simple way for you guys to repay me. :) hehe

So the three of us get to Dustys house in Surrey and haul it into the back of the truck and up the stairs. Not so bad, but an all day job it was...Finished in time to see the Seahawks kick the Panthers butts...

Have you heard the old saying "big and dumb"? well the three of us probably thought that as we carried the tank up by hand. No winch, no sled. Just brawn and a great fear of dying... It was rather enlightening....lol

Here it is in the front entrance..

The brace was broken before I bought it, I swear...

Anyways, the tank got up the stairs and it only took 30 mins to take the broken brace off and silicone the new one back on with scs1200 silicone.

Tank is fixed

Now to get my 180 DT taken apart and sold with the stand. Which I do have advertised on here. Now of course, if you listen to my wife, I do not do anything in life the easy way. I never thought I would be dumb enough to want a bigger tank! I learned my lessen with boats...or so I thought. Anyways, since I thought nothing of the future when building my first ever saltwater tank last year, I used the the stand for my 180 bowfront DT, to set the 90 gal refugium on. Of course it was a wise idea to use up the extra space on the stand to set half the 75 gallon sump on as well. I would never think that one day, i may need that stand back..UGH!! So now I have to break down these tanks to get stand....

Pay attentions kids, you may learn alot of what not to do from me...:)

I think the tank only weighs about 85 lbs , but it has to be raised about 5 ft to get it up there...;)

Haha, Yesssss. My lil package came today.
I can not believe it got here so quick. I have ordered from some of the more well known online stores in the USA and every time it has taken a minimum of 10 days to get to Sumas WA, where I go and pick it up. One time I tried having it delivered to my door and it took over three weeks to arrive and it was only an impeller for my Red Dragon skimmer pump.

This stuff was shipped from Hong Kong Last Monday and it was at my local post office yesterday!!! WOW! Pretty impressive

So these are the goods and the prices..

Jebao Twins Linkage Controller
Select Controller: Package RW-20 (+ $140.00) $140.00 This is 2 WP20s and the twin controller for 140 bucks!

Jebao RW/ FS/ wp20 Replacement Kits
Extension Cord (100cm) $10.00

Boyu Water Level Alarm $4.00

Liquid Box 3Room(4.5Litres) $22.50

Apex / GHL to Jebao RW DC WP Pump $34.99

So that was 254.63 all in. Shipping, US dollar exchange etc.

Not sure of the quality, but they seem well built and quality items. Time will tell.

Not sure if anyone wnts to chime in and offer an opinion, but I am not sure if this is the way to go or not.

This is how I want to set up my return pumps...

I have pan world 250 PS running for my 180 gal that will be coming down.
I have a spare Panworld 150Ps

The 250 is good for 1900 GPH and the 150 is rated at 1100 GPH.
I figure with head pressure etc etc. I should be good for 2400GPH

I figure I can have them hooked up to the Apex, which will allow me to have one or both pumps running at the same time. My thinking is that there will be a built in spare, so if one dies, the other is there

I was also thinking that I could just run the smaller one at night and the larger during the day, or even both during the day. I think it gives me options and I can not see a downfall.

Anyone want to offer up some advice or concerns?

Three sides are bearing walls that go down to the concrete floor downstairs. 16" O/C 2x4 studs. The front, which you see in the pic is framed with 2x6 and the opening has a 6x6 header sitting on triple 2x6.

I do not think it will sag, but I will probably put a post in the center, as I want to put doors on it anyways.

It was actually only a 2x4 full height wall, till the GF thought a saltwater tank would be nice...

I cut out the wall, widened it to 27" wide etc etc. Ended up hacking it up a bit to install all the gear downstairs, as I had no idea the gear etc needed for this hobby.

Sounds like a good plan with the return pumps. I wouldn't turn any return pumps off at night. It's the powerheads (if anything) that should slow down for the night.

Sounds like the wall will be good too. It doesn't look like you've modified it at all (which is good haha).

Thanks Myka,

I was just thinking of turning off the 250 and leaving the 150 on.
You do not think that is enough?
I have only been reefing for less than a year now, so still learning.

My idea was to run a 3/4" pipe from one end of the tank to the other under the canopy. I would then install 6 or so 1/2" or 3/4" loc lines with different nozzles on them for returns. I think I will put shut off valves on each one to control flow. Not sure if they should all point in one direction or random...

I was a carpenter for 20 years, so I am hoping I learned a few things..Alot of weight on it.

It is actually really well built. In all honesty I was expecting crap for 23 bucks. It is good and solid with John Guest tube connectors.
I am going to use it to dose Phyto etc.

I would give it a 9 out of 10

Even the high low water alarm seems great. Paid 4 bucks. Figure I can find some use for it at that cheap of price.

if you run 2 different return pumps for various times of day then..

You wound run into problems with your drain system depending on how its designed.

for example if you have a herbie design and its set perfectly for the pan250. when you switch to the smaller pump at night your drain will lose full siphon and your sump level will raise.

Usually herbie or doso drain designs are matched to 1 return pump by setting the gate valve on the main drain. So with this idea i think you may have issues , thats unless i am missing something ?

I never thought about the Herbie....I was thinking sump level might change and cause issues with the skimmer ..

I have not used the Herbie, but plan on it for this tank build.

I correct my self. I will be using the Bean Animal. I went to is own site to see what issues I might have with two pumps running differently and it seems that it will compensate for variations is the GPH of a pump. Not sure if it will compensate a large amount or just a little variance in amounts of GPH.

Anyone know the tolerances of what it will compensate for?

You are correct my friend.
The WP is the old model I have been reading about everywhere and forgot I have the new RW model, as they did not send any fricken instructions in the boxes explaining how the presets worked and I had to search youtube etc.

As a side note to anyone. I ordered the apex controller, for the RW-20s from them too and they did not send the power supply with it. They now say it does not come with one and that it states that on the website. I can not see that it says that anywhere....

Not a biggie, but who wants to order something without the power supply. I can not even find anything on the website as to what power supply is required except that it requires 24 volt....
