Currently I have a piece of eggcrate sitting on top of my overflow. I notched the eggcrate so that it would partially sit inside the overflow. Apparently, the holes in the eggcrate aren't small enough, as I found one of my clowns getting chucked around in there just a few minutes ago. Is there anything else I could try?

try doubling up the egg crate so they interlap to create smaller holes, then zap strap them together. it doubles the thickness of the egg crate but if it works for you, great.

It has been suggested before that plastic "gutter guard" ( cheap too) works well. It has smaller holes than egg crate and is flexible . I plan to use it over my new overflow. I made a shallow tray the size of the OF and gooped the corners, flipped it over, it friction fits quite nice....goood luck.

Egg Crate wrapped in some sort of mesh (like bridal veil material).

I think that would get gunked up really fast...
Window screen might be a little better, although you may find that gets gunked up fast too.

I put a white plastic grid ontop of my egg crate, it comes in a rool and can be found in the evetrough section of home depot. gives you 1/4 x 1/4 " holes.
