I clean the powerheads every second waterchange by scrubbing them with a vegetable brush which keeps them pretty clean. A couple times per year they get a vinegar soak overnight to remove calcium build up on the impeller and any coralline on the outside that the brush didn't remove.

Agreed. Vinegar works wonders on power heads, etc. I buy a 4 litre jug and soak them overnight in an old margarine tub. Everything comes off easily with an old toothbrush and then really rinse everything well before returning to service.

The Hydor cleaning powder also works really well. I have had issues with vinegar damaging rubber on some equipment (not sure if it was from using warm water or too much vinegar). The powder works wonders and is quite a bit faster for me anyway.

Some vinegar will bring the shine back ounce a year and every now and then I use a plastic bristle brush and gently brush the walls of the power head.
