OK so where is a good place for Chinese or Japanese food relatively close to surrey

If you like good, inexpensive sushi, I like Kojima Sushi in New West for their bento boxes, California Sushi in Burnaby/Coquitlam for huge portions at low prices, Oyama Sushi in Burnaby for great food at great prices with great ambiance. Oyama is the only "date night" place of the three though.

Sorry, don't eat out in Surrey, which is far better known for its East Indian restaurants than sushi or Chinese.

If you have not gone yet, Green Lettuce in Surrey, 72 Ave and 120th st. SE corner.
Chinese with a little east Indian flavour of course.

It's been ages since I've been to Surrey. However; "Lee Yuen" or "Lee Yuen Seafood Restaurant" has very good traditional 'comfort' Chinese food. Service and decor aren't mind blowing but the restaurant is clean and food is good.
