View Full Version : Splitting a nem

I bought a teeny tiny RBTA a few months ago, and it has gotten super big really fast. It hasn't split yet, and where it has set up shop, I pretty much can't use half of my tank. I would estimate it is about 7" across and its tentacles stretch 3-4" high.

Has anyone had any luck with forcing their nem to split? (over feeding as some sites suggest) If all else fails, I know there is the option to manually split it, but I can see that turning into a disaster if I do it myself... if there is anyone in the city that would wanna do it for me

Tried it myself, both lived...

Worse thing I can see happening is making the wrong cut on thru the nem.

Make sure its a sharp blade...or sharp scissors for perfect alignment. Make sure the surface you're cutting on is flat as possible.

don't do it :( poor nem. Mine just split right after i reworked my rock to catch a fish. I had six now i have eight. Maybe the stress of impending doom makes them split. i also had one split twice in a year i think because i was overfeeding it.

Yeah, I would rather force it to split by food/light/environment manipulation than cutting it.

For some reason, in my mind cutting it with a blade is like cutting a puppy in half.

Bulk reef supply did a YouTube video on cutting nems recently. Have a look

Feeding split mine. I was feeding diced shrimp from T&T, next day one split, one turned to slim and others okay.
