View Full Version : why all the pm/text me for photos posts?
Am I missing something, is it more difficult to post pictures?
I'm not guilty of the "text me for pictures" posts, but for me to post pics on the computer used to require me to get my pictures off of my phone/camera onto the computer, then upload to photo bucket, then put the pictures in via html codes… so it was a hassle for me until I paid $ for the tapatalk app on my phone which uploads it directly.
So maybe many don't have the app.

A "hassle" perhaps but as a seller do you not want the greatest chance of success for your sale? Even if it takes 5 - 10 minutes out of your day?
Lots of people are just lazy, and to be honest, I generally bypass all adds which don't have pictures up front. We are buying/selling items which need to be seen to be appreciated, post some damn pictures! aha.

It takes all of 2 minutes to upload photots and make a post. I use photobucket on my phone. Very simple and free. It should be a requirement to have pics in the for sale section

I don't understand either so easy to do straight from phone I have no intrest in anything with no pics.
And even for those who don't want to create an external account for storage, Canreef members have 4 MB of free storage. :) Not much, but I can fit about 40 med-res compressed JPG photos on it.

That's still more work than doing nothing, though!
I've ran a forum before. It's a lot of work, without having to watch over a busy b/s/t.

Every post I ever delete results in a PM. Why? You didn't post pic. I don't want to post pic. You have to. Why. It's a rule. That's a dumb rule, I don't have a camera.
This goes on until poster tells me to F off, then I have to ban someone who was trying to sell his Apex to you for $40. I'm frustrated, my kid is now doing something she shouldn't be, you didn't get a deal and we lost a member. All over a pic??
No thanks :)

Dunno why people cry about a free site. First it was people who were blind and couldn't see the top right of all posts stating where people lived and now about pics. If people don't like the site that people volunteer to operate than go away or keep quiet.

It has nothing to do with the site. The site is great.
The thing about pictures is that people want to know exactly what coral/fish/tank/product that people are trying to sell. If you want to sell your item, take the 2 minutes to post the picture of it. As a buyer, I couldn't give a flying fart about what google says the item looks like, when I am browsing posts, I want to know what your item looks like, and I don't want to mess around for half a day while I wait for someone to text me back and send me tiny photos that I can't see on my phone, or go to someone's house (and most sellers live quite far from me) to see something that wasn't what I was looking for. I can easily go to another post selling a similar item, with a picture and buy it.
I think part of being a decent seller is to provide certain information to convenience buyers. I'm not saying the site has to regulate it and make it mandatory that buyers post photos, but those people just have to expect that they may not get as much interest.

Kinda depends on what the item is if pics are needed or even helpful. I bought a bag of rox carbon awhile back from someone. I didn't need to see a picture of him spreading it all over his kitchen counter to verify that it is a bunch of small, black particles. Individuals have commented that this is just the seller being lazy while at the same time being too lazy themselves to inquire on the item.
I don't buy the "too lazy" reasoning. It takes all of 2 minutes to upload a pic which you can refer to in the ad.
Let's say on a site like this that there are 10 people interested in some SPS frags that one is selling. Now the OP needs to respond to 10 people.
To send a pic to someone by PM means you need to have the pic hosted somewhere and PM them the link. So now, it is about 2 minutes to upload a pic somewhere and then 1 minute x 10 PM replies = 10 minutes for a total of 12 minutes.
Or if texting 10 people your pics, it probably takes 1 minute each to read the PM and text the pic for a total of 10 minutes.
So it actually takes longer to PM or text 10 people the pictures than it is to just post the link in the first place. :)

I've been on other forums where you can't list an item unless you post a picture of the item with your name and the name of the forum on it, to make sure you're the one in possession of the goods, and the goods are to be sold on that forum. FS threads without photos get deleted by the mods.
The "lazy" argument is lame. I don't even look at "for sale" posts with no pictures...

I still don't understand why people want to regulate how other people do stuff. If someone wants to sell something but not post a pic, that's their prerogative. If they want to ask 2X what their item is worth, that's also their prerogative. If they want to sell it and not ship.... also their prerogative.
If you don't want to buy something that a pic isn't shown for, that's your prerogative. Don't want to pay what their asking? Fine, don't. And if you don't like how an add is worded, formatted, shipped etc? MOVE ON!
You be you, and let the other person be them. Geeze, 4 pages of this?????

The "lazy" argument goes both ways. Some people don't like to browse back to view past pics on a longer FS thread, and expect fresh pics with every new post. But that is their loss, too, as they could be missing out on some great deals.

The assumption one's own time is more valuable than someone else's is borderline discrimination but to make it public knowledge is ignorant and immature. While I'd agree taking pictures and posting them is a fairly simple and quick process, provided you're setup to do so, it still takes significantly less time and effort to send a pm, text or email to request said pictures. If you're not willing to do that then chances are you weren't really that interested in the first place.

I agreee with your argument, in general. People can post whatever they want and people are free to read it, or not.
But we're talking about selling here. We're talking about benefitting financially from the network effect this site offers. This site, like many others, can concoct its own rules when it comes to members banefitting financially from it. Or not...
Personally, I feel I have wasted a few seconds I'll never get back every time someone posts a for sale thread with no picture. I don't like seeing pictures on a puny phone screen, so I don't even bother with texted pics.
Just my $0.02...
it still takes significantly less time and effort to send a pm, text or email to request said pictures. .
For sending pics in a PM, is there a way to attach pics in a PM? If not, then sending a link to the photo in a PM requires me to upload the pic externally. So it does not take less time but more time. If I need to PM to multiple people, then it is even more time regardless.
For Texting or Emailing, that would be true if I am sending to 1 or 2 people. If I am sending to more than that, then I wouldn't say it takes significantly less time. If the pic was uploaded, then it's one and done. If I have to reply to everyone with a Text message, then it is more work for me. Some items will sell after 1 Text but many will not so I will constantly be sending Text messages.
I agree though that for people who don't know how to upload pics to external storage or not setup, there is an initial learning curve and might not be worth doing for selling a small item or items that all look the same (like an Emerald Crab. :) ) . As an aside, setting up external storage in my option is a good investment in time since external storage is useful for not just selling stuff on Canreef.

By that logic the same can be said about the seller. If they don’t want to post pictures, chances are they are not really interested in selling it. Either that or there is something wrong with it.
Not posting pictures adds an unnecessary step for both parties. The buyer must send a text/e-mail requesting pictures and the seller must reply.
The debate is not really about whose time is more valuable than whose but about what tends to work for a sale.

Everyone will do what they want regardless.
Personally if I don't see a picture, I just close the ad and move on. I'm sure I've passed by TONS of corals I would have loved just because they didn't post a picture, but who cares, I purchased something else from somebody else instead. And I most likely didn't really NEED the item...
And why should I waste my data to get a picture texted to me then have the item/coral be ****tyer then expected. Not only did that waste my time and the sellers time but now we've both wasted date on a sale that's going nowhere.
If I want to sell my items then I will put in the effort to post pictures, way easier then answering a ton of "pics please" pm's from people who would never buy the item in the first place.
Will admit I do find it a little frustrating not seeing a picture in a FS post and having to jump through hoops to get it but if something does interest me enough, I will send a PM will my email address, it just seems a lot more frequent recently.
Don't believe it should be moderated or mandatory and even think lots of FS posts waste bandwidth as I really don't need a picture of a pump or a skimmer or even a common fish as I'll usually do a search anyway (links are nice though). Just thinking if someone is saying they have something unique or some silly named zoa a picture in the post would be great and speed up the process.
