View Full Version : Lighting a new 90

Hey all! Starting up after a brief break of about four years. My tank is going to be a nice little 90. At least it will feel little after the 180, but room in the new house dictates it must be so. Anyways, although I have a pretty good handle on the hobby, the biggest change in the past four years has been the explosion of LED lighting, and I definitely want to go this route. I'd like a single unit, or perhaps two, that I can suspend from the ceiling as opposed to a canopy or tank mounted lights. As always, I like to save money where I can, but I've never been one to ask for the cheapest product on the market, I want what works! Can someone throw me some info? Of course I'm reading and learning, but if anyone wants to throw in their two cents, I'd love to hear! Thanks!

I'm new to LED lighting too and have done a fair bit of research on the units available.

As far as I'm aware the two units with the largest spread are the GHL Mitras and the AI Hydra 52, both offering around a 36" spread.

If you have a 90 cube then one of these fixtures will cut it. However, of you have a 48" tank then I don't know that you will get away with a single fixture.

I don't have much experience in many of the other fixtures available which are bigger units but hopefully someone else can chime in there.

Standard 90, 48" long. I'm doing a ton of reading as we speak! lol

From what I read one fixture may be ambitious. But like I said, I don't know much about the maxspect fixtures or some others. There's also the DIY route of course too.

I'm definitely not opposed to two units, as long as they can both be hung and look decent.

Kessil's are good.they can be hung or you can purchase the goosenecks for a much cleaner look.my tank is 36" long and I have two Radion gen 1s that I upgraded to G3 pro.i think it all comes down to your budget and brand preference.good luck with the purchase and will be tagging along.

I just purchased a 48" programble Evergro led and am very happy. Comes with a remote and your hanging equipment. $500 shipped to your door.
Radions and Hydra 52's are nice but would cost me 3x the amount an Evergro does in similar size.

Cheers!!

my vote is AI hydra - I have had mine for two months ( dyi hanging kit) love the control you get with the director. Great customer service and very powerful.
very good price IMO for what you get - best bang for the buck
