Anyone have any recommendations for places to have a custom door built? I'm putting the finishing touches on my fishroom and need a proper door. It's a smaller then standard space and I need staining/sealing done as well.

I've bought door and jam kits from HD and just trimmed to size

Do you know what style? We get a lot of our materials and cabinet doors from Multiwood. They do a good job and they also make passage doors, they have some samples in their showroom.

Most of our passage doors come from LoGulo, but I think they're a bit more expensive.

Pm me if have some more questions.

How small? Standard doors start from 18" but usually anything under 24" is special order. If it's a custom wood/cabinet style door then I'd second multiwood but they won't stain it.

The height is the issue, 77". So far all my quotes are $650+.

Perhaps I'm missing something but you can buy standard doors at 78" high (80" is more common but 78" is typically an option for most interior door styles), then trim 1/2" off top and bottom.

Seems everyone only stocks 80" and anything smaller is custom. Also I want an unprimed door which isn't helping me in the price department.

I did the circuit this weekend of the big box home improvement stores. Lowes doesn't custom make, Rona and HD are the same. Windsor Plywood had the some of the same suppliers but also more custom options.

I have two more places to check tomorrow. Sometimes older homes are such a pain in the butt.

Noodles,
The style I want is a shaker style - 5 inset panels. I also need the door to be solid wood and would like to stain it.

Pretty much any door you can find at 80" is available by special order in 78" height (standard is 80" but optional is 78, 84 & 96), I know for a fact HD can order them since I've done it before. It will however be next to impossible to find one unprimed because that typically means a higher grade of wood which will all be custom made or order, just like cabinet doors, if that's the case $650+ sounds about right. That said you can stain primed doors depending on the color and product. A lot of exterior doors are primed fiberglass and I've seen those stained before with good results.

Have you checked at home improvement warehouse?

Keep in mind that depending on the color and skill(not very hard) you can stain an MDF door as well.

you cant trim too much off of those unless you brace the inside

Good to know my price isn't completely out to lunch. You're the first person to mention such a WIDE gap between primed unprimed. I knew it would be a difference, just didn't realize it would be that much. Maybe I'll just suck it up on the cost? I just can't seem to wrap my mind around $650 for a door.

I am not somebody you want anywhere near paint or stain. I am a disaster. I am forbidden touch it as I can't be near the stuff without becoming a disaster.

Does it have to be stained?

I went with white for a door under my stairs with a pretty severe truncated height to work with (possibly even less than 70"). I just went with a flat white door so it wouldn't matter if I trimmed the top and and bottom off.

If you trim a hollow door, just be sure to reblock the new end (I just took the block that came off and reglued it in in place).

Just checked at Windsor here in Cranbrook. A knotty pine door is $119. They will take a regular height door and cut it down to size, and will machine the hinge spaces and door knob holes for another $35. A lot of new homes have knotty pine that is stained and then clear coated.

The new wiping stains they have nowadays are a lot easier to use. Find the colour you like, apply and wipe, just watch that you don't overlap the sides when you do the front and back.

Not sure the width you need......that might make a difference in price....but not a lot.

Try out Tims reusables.
They sell reclaimed housing supplies.
So lots of old doors.

Not too far from Concept.

Did you try united wood products? They are just south of the city by Aldersyde.
