Finally my tank is close to being done.

A few weeks ago my exams finished and i had a exam break(3 weeks) so i decided it would be a good time to do an upgrade. I currently am running a Biocube 29 with T5Ho lights, media basket, and skimmer. I am only 15 years old so its always been my dream to get a saltwater aquarium(started when i started diving when i was 8). But my dad never gave in until september, my mom has always been all for a saltwater tank. I pay for almost everything my self as i have a summer job working at a marina in manitoba where my cottage is.(i was born in manitoba and still have most family out there) I also shovel our neighbours driveways. I am also parent sponsored for a few things.

any ways on to the tank:
150 Gallons
52x28x24h
Full starfire with start fire euro brace
Back Left corner overflow as it will be in the corner of our basement
36" stand height
ATI power module hybrid lights 8 bulb 48" fixture
sump(Unsure of size as dave@concept designed it for easy water changes and a frag tank section)
Vertex Omega 150 skimmer
2 TLF reactors Carbon and GFO
2 WP40s
1 MP10 from existing Biocube
Mag 12 return pump
Also a APEX which my parents are paying for as we travel quite often:lol::biggrin::surprise:
All ordered from Concept in Calgary

Here is what i am thinking for fish

Yellow Tang
Purple or Sailfin Tang not sure which one
Flame Angel
Anthias not sure how many probably 3-5
Copperband Butterfly
Lawnmower Blennie
Longnose Hawkfish
Candy hogfish
Pipefish
Royal Gramma
Fairy Wrasse
Leopard Wrasse

And also the fish being transfered from my biocube

2 Clownfish
3 Blue Green Reef Chromis
1 Purple Firefish
Target Mandarin

I am also transfering lots of corals.

Here are some pictures of where it is going and the fish room

where the tank is going behind that wall is a fish room

Check out untamed's 400g build (Link (http://www.canreef.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=28436)). He used wood as a "bar" surround around the tank that goes with your bar top theme.

Looks like a great start! Side note, what's your dads platinum record for?!

No it's fully planned out but he's never really took much interest unless it's watching the tank as it progresses. My grandpa came over little while ago for a party we were having(we won esso minor hockey week) and he kept telling my dad what a fantastic hobby it was. My dad then was all for the new tank and even installed a laundry sink in the basement for me. But I just don't think he knows how big it is.

Sounds like you have a plan and the list of the equipment you using rocks.
Just sharing my experience I would think about twice about the flame angel with hit guys is a hit or miss I have one that nips on my sps and I hate him but he is so beautiful...
Anyways good luck with the build and great place you chose to put the tank.

I also was wondering what kind of light would be good for the frag section of my sump?
I was thinking maybe a par 38 or one of those celestial lights. Would those be good enough to grow corals.

hi there, sounds like you are on the right track, to match the basement, how about the stand is built with the stonework that is similar to the bar, that bar and basement is beautiful, I would like to spend time down there looking at the fish tank. By the way, sounds like you are a young hobbyist. cheers ken

I was also thinking about that but I think it would be to expensive and heavy if I ever needed to take it off I was hoping to just use magnets to hold it up:neutral:

So while I am sick in bed with the flu, my awesome mom went to Concept to pick up some stuff we needed. She was able to snap a few photos of the tank build in progress. Here are some photos (thanks Matt!):

Here is a photo of the whole tank in progress:

Sump and all is being built tomorrow. I am playing in a hockey tournament in Vegas and will be gone for a week. I am hoping I can get my tank cycling before we leave.

Still haven't decided on how to finish the stand - will maybe wait and see once it's up and running. There won't be a rush for that.

It's not very much of a wave box as it is a dry box for my mp10 other wise would've had no where else to put it. So I'll call it a Dry Box.

Oh, OK
You're just going to put your Vortech anywhere you like on the inside/outside of the box

So it's not a wavebox, but rather a Vortech dry box

I will make sure to notify you all if he gets evicted. I still don't know how we are going to handle this tank when we are gone all summer (leave June 20 back September 1). Wish someone could invent autopilot :) As for him being 15, he's a great kid. And this hobby is way better than the drugs and alcohol his class mates use to keep themselves busy.

But his dad may still have a stroke once he sees the actual size of this tank with his own two eyes. Pictures don't really give him the clear picture (and us saying it's slightly larger than the biocube isn't quite preparing him, haha)

Yes the one on the left is the top off with a float switch that runs to my RODI in another room, and the one on the right is my salt water mixing tank. they are both gravity fed so when i do a water change i just pump water out then open the valve and the tank fills it self back up.

So i transfered all my fish and some of my coral to the new tank. They are all doing well and eating, on top of transferring fish i also went and picked up 2 back and white clowns at Golds. I put them in with my old clowns and everyone is still Happy:biggrin:. I also ordered my tangs but i think i want a Blonde Naso Tang in stead of a normal Naso Tang. O i also ordered my Royal Gramma. And i chose a Purple Tang over the Sailfin.

Thanks Hayden

P.S i will post some pictures later as I have hockey and wont be able to take the pictures and post them before I have to leave.

Fish, Fish, and more fish
My clownfish normal and Black and White are all happy as well as my Purple Firefish Chromis and hogfish.

My Hogfish have i think started mating as they swim touching eachother and one will spin doing 360s around the other one as he also goes around the other one. They sleep side by side(very cute:smile:). Will they lay eggs? i cant seem to find anything online about it.

And yes no fighting is going on but seems as the two bigger clowns have paired up and the two small ones have paired up. maybe the 2 small ones were to immature for the bigger ones.

So I went and picked some more fish. A yellow tang a regal tang and a royal gramma. My yellow tang isn't eating the nori I feed him though I am using a elastic to elastic it to a rock where he normally picks off the rock but he won't even look at it. Does anyone have any ideas? For the rest of the fish I'm still waiting for a purple tang a naso tang a blue throat trigger a flame angel a law mower Bennie a leopard wrasse. Maybe a few more I'm probably missing some.
I will post some more pictures soon

Did you quarantine your new fish? And if so, how was the YT eating before you put him into the display tank?

Lovin' your build
I'm still following along, regardless of what has happened in other threads :boink:
I think peeps got out of control and hope you didn't take it too personally
Thoughts/feelings are hard to decifer in a forum when all you see are words

So, what steps are you taking while you're adding all these new fish to your 'new' system ?
I hope you're using some kind of bacterial boost stuff to help you over ammonia humps/get you through cycles
I'm thinking something such as Seachem Stability, although there are others out there that I haven't used

From what I can decifer, it looks like you're not quarantining your critters, or are you ?

As for your tang not eating the Nori, have you tried a clip on the glass, such as a Veggie Mag ?
If 'any' of your other fish will eat from it, I'd almost guarantee your tang will be right in there like a fat kid on a smartie

Another thing to try is to soak some Nori in a dish with some tank water, then drop in small pieces and see if the tang goes after them, or sees other fish do so

Good luck dude !

I am using prodibio products for the ammonia . No I'm not quarantining but I left it at the fish store for 2 weeks to make sure all fish were healthy and eating well. No I have not tried using a veggie clip but I will try the dropping nori in in small pieces. Thanks for the advice.

Oh, OK,... but tangs don't always start eating nori right away. But he should once he gets comfortable, and is more hungry.

Re quarantine. You should consider that. Otherwise you are playing Russian Roulette with your fish, and sooner or later you will have an ich outbreak and lose a bunch of fish. You can learn the lesson the hard way,... or try to do it properly from the start.

Depends on size of fish. Should be OK for most new fish in the 2 or 3 inch size.

A little update on my tank.

Currently i have been in Grand Cayman i get back on sunday and i hope to add some more fish. I just don't know which ones to add next.

Here is currently what i have in my tank

2 normal clownfish
2 black and white clownfish
2 candy hogfish
3 blue green chromis
Purple firefish
Yellow tang
Regal tang
Royal Gramma
Carpenters flasher wrasse
target mandarin

Here is what i am still wanting to get. I had to get the yellow tang because my hogfish were picking on my wrasse and he wouldn't come out.

Purple tang
Naso Tang
Blue Throated Trigger
Flame Angel
Anthias not sure how many probably 3-5
Copperband Butterfly
Longnose HAwkfish
Lawnmower Blennie
Mystery wrasse
3 more chromis
and maybe 2 Bangai Cardinals as there is someone on can reef selling babies :)

These are the fish i still want to get i just don't know which ones to get next i hope to get 5 or 6 more i will be quarantining most of them depending on where i get them from. I have a 20 gallon for quarantine and I'm worried its not big enough. Any input on this will help

Got my QT all set up(learned my lesson) and i was like ok maybe this time around ill only pick the awesome fish that i want and go for more of a Quality over quantity

So not very much has changed since i left on vacation. I had a small problem with my regal tang but he's doing well now. I didn't loose anything while i was gone and all corals and fish are happy. Right now in my tank i have

Yellow Tang
3 blue green chromes
Purple Firefish
2 normal clownfish
2 black and white clownfish
Carpenters flasher wrasse
Regal tang
Royal Gramma
Target Mandarin
6 neon gobies
Coral banded shrimp
4 Peppermint shrimp
2 Cleaner shrimp
And 2 Candy hogfish that i am trying to catch.( what a pita)

And in quarantine i have a sand sifting goby and a very small and cute blue throat trigger

as for Corals I got a Bonsai SPS and I also picked up a Small Ultra A maxima clam it is about 1 and half inches wide.

This was my first time trying with some top down shots so don't judge lol.

This is my Euphylia rock I still have one coral I'm waiting for to fill a spot.

Ok so heres an update.

lately I've been cleaning up stuff and starting to get into the Set and forget category. I hooked up my dosing pumps. Im dosing calcium and alkalinity. I also ran my RODI line through my roof today and straight into my ATO and water change tank. Im starting to absolutely LOVE this water change procedure it takes me all of 5 minutes to do a 30 gallon water change. I just pump water to the drain. Then open my valve on my water changing tank and Voila. Water change is done. no more hauling annoying buckets around. I also got my Frag Tank running with a shelf i built with egg crate. Instead of the Par 38s i decided to go with 2 kessil A150's one us super blue and one is tuna blue. I love the look of these lights together. I installed a UV on my system and I've noticed a massive difference in the health of my fish.

As for live stock I've added a couple more fish and a Tiger Pistol Shrimp who is living with my lazy watchman goby. I also added a BTA that won't stop walking around :( and a purple and green blasto which is one of my new favorites.

Here are some pictures i took with my uncles(jackabby) olympus E520. I personally don't real like this camera but its better then my EPL1 so, whatever.

My tank is coming along Im looking to add some more SPS now as my tank is full of LPS and softies. Im looking for small colonies or big frags lol. Anything colourful is a consideration.

A blue anchor is like a hammer but as the tips blow up like a hammer they also bend into a anchor shape i will take a close up between the two tomorrow

The frag section makes life so much easier especially because my mom hates seeing the frag plug i just use it to grow my corals over top of the plugs so you cant see it then my mom is happy :)

Ok so a little update

Everything is going pretty good. I only lost one coral because it got stung by my torch. The coral i lost was my prized Blue Anchor that finished off my Euphylia rock. I woke up one morning to find it getting stung by my torch within 2 hours it was partly covered in brown slime algae. I was sucking it off every ten minutes but i just couldn't seem to save it. Im now looking for another one but with such a rare piece its not very easy to find them.

On a good note everything else is happy.

Because of me using H2O ocean salt i have had to start dosing Magnesium but buying kent magnesium is just way to expensive i need to find something else to dose with.

These pictures were taken with my iPhone. I have a life proof case with is water proof so i stuck my phone under the water and i got some really good shots. Who knew an iPhone could take good pictures of a fish tank?

Here are some pictures of everything

Here you go denny your little hem is growing up :)

I am having some small algae issues but it's getting better slowly. I'm having some small problems balancing grade 11 and the fish tank but everyone slips on the tank at least once:redface:

Instead of making a large list of everything I have I made a small video of my tank with a iPhone 6 Plus. I am finding the camera on this phone to be unbelievable even with the LED's.

Those are pilot fish they are schooling and ussually live with sharks. They get to be close to 2 feet long so you have to have a tank lined up for them. Before you buy them make sure you have somewhere to take them when they get big. Golds awuariums in calgary has 2 small ones right now. I have zero complaints about them and they are easily the most tame fish in my tank. I can pick them up in my hands whish is pretty cool.

Hey man/woman, I don't appreciate you saying or typing things about me like that. I do not know what is going on in your life and frankly it doesn't really matter. But sometimes you have to take in consideration that there may be things in this world that come up and may be more important. Im in grade 11 and its exam time, Its very stressful dealing with people, taking care of a saltwater fish tank, and trying to study for exams. My life does not revolve around canreef and maybe i can't get back to someone instantly. So before you go assuming think about what your saying.

I finally had some time to write an update on my tank. This year has been a big learning time for me with the tank. I ended up with a really bad algae outbreak and had to make some tough decisions about my tank. I initially decided to sell my set up, because I couldn't keep up with school and other things going on with our family. I was working on selling off my corals first, then the fish, and then the set up...after I got through selling most of my corals I was not ready to sell off my fish. This told me that it wasn't time to get rid of the whole thing.

So I have started leaning towards only doing a fish only...still with a few corals left though...It's not easy selling stuff from your tank piece by piece, there was a 3 week period where I had people coming here to get corals...one or two at a time...Then I decided to keep the tank going.

Through the winter I realized my Blonde Naso Tang "MO" was getting too big for my tank, so I gave him to someone. He now lives with another Naso Tang in a much bigger tank. I also had to get rid of my squirrel fish because I think they ate some of my anthias and cardinal fish. They also are in a new tank now, and apparently are not eating anything in their tank...

I ran into a problem this winter with aiptasia. It was starting to grow everywhere. So I got a Copperband Butterfly "Winston". Winston was an awesome fish. He would eat from our hands, follow us around the tank, and was a fantastic fat fish. And he ate all the aiptasia!!! Eventually he started picking on my clams, so I sold them with my corals.

A couple weeks ago, Winston got stung by my rose bubble tip Anemone pretty badly. Sadly, he didn't make it though the night. It was awful, we still miss him lots. It's strange because all of the fish stay away from the anemone... RIP Winston. :(

When I sold off most of my corals I decided to get a juvenile emperor angel. I always wanted one but with all my corals I couldn't get one. I still have the long tentacle plate coral and bubble coral and so far, he hasn't touched them.

At the same time I also got a cowfish. He is a pretty cool fish, but within a day he had ich. He seems to be handling it OK, but my yellow tang seems to have it now. He has never had it before. I am hoping that since all my fish are fat and healthy they will manage to fight it off. I am using garlic guard in their food...also feeding some of the medicated food, but have to be careful that my anemones don't get it...

That's about it for now. I am finding it a challenge to manage school, the tank, travel, family time etc etc. Now that my algae outbreak is under control it is much easier to manage the tank though.

The pilot fish are the black and yellow striped ones. They are super cool, but are quickly outgrowing my tank. I have a larger tank lined up for them already, but they have to be a certain size before they can go into that tank also.

never said anything about you personally , just saying what happened . Maybe take in to consideration other peoples time before posting a thread you never really intended on replying to. Could care less if you are in grade 11 and dont have time to care for your reef. You dont like what I said to bad welcome to life. Next

If your worrying about time why are you posting totally unnecessary things that create nothing but problems. Why would you even start something like this? it doesn't make sense.

And.. above everything I said please text or phone me, i responded to everyone who did that, hence why I have no corals left.

Also you never even sent me an PM so why does this have anything to do with you?

first off if you read my first post it was a ? , and I sent a text and never got a reply as well as another friend I have on here told me not to bother as he got no response either. You seem to be offended over nothing I was just pointing out the obvious if you are not selling the stuff why make a post to waste peoples time in the first place. I could honesty care less . Drop it and move on .
