I am trying to reseal an old tank. I am looking for GE Silicone 1 black but cannot find it in Rona. They said they only carry "Clear" not Black.

Does anyone know where can I get that in Vancouver area?

If not, then I will have to settle with Clear.

Thanks

GE I does not come in black, well at least AFAIK. Also there have been some reported issues with using GE I or II silicone lately so probably best to avoid them. GE SCS1200 is what you want to use.

You probably won't find it at any hardware stores, I get mine from oceanic corals

From what I read in different forums, GE Silicone 1 (for windows and doors) is good but 2 (for bathrooms and kitchens) is not good because Silicone 2 has mold resistance chemicals.

One very important thing nobody has mentioned yet, is that there is a big difference between the GE I silicone and the SCS1200 silicone. The GE stuff is a silicone SEALANT. The SCS1200 is a silicone ADHESIVE. 2 very different products. If you are just sealing an already built aquarium, then yes, you can use the GE I stuff if you find it in the colour you want. BUT, the sealant has very poor strength properties. The SCS1200 adhesive is what's used for building and sealing aquariums because it has excellent strength properties. The guys that are experiencing failures are the ones using a sealant to build an aquarium. Put the high water pressure on the glass and it will come apart.

Go to auto parts store. They sell pure silicon in black. 6 bux a tube verses 11-13 a tube for "aquarium silicon" which is.......pure silicone sealant. Off the shelf stuff at hardware stores 99% of the time only carries silicon with algicides.....bad for coral.

Btw, I have 3 tanks, 90 gal plus, all either built or re sealed with pure silicon form auto parts store........no failures. Just make sure u remove ALL old silicon u can get to, clean VERY WELL with pure alcohol, and dont allow silicon beads to from "skin" or ur screwed and will not get good bond bead to bead, and "tool" bead to make sure good contact with glass. (I use my finger).Mask area ur sealing to minimize mess but dont worry too much. Once silicon cures messes are easily cut and cleaned off wiith razor scraper.

Will the SCS1200 bond polycarbonate to glass is it's an adhesive?

I've heard polycarbonate will leach stuff in saltwater, I use scs1200 for acrylic overflow boxes all the time, just scuff up the glued surface

Like stated, use acrylic, and it will hold it in position, but personally I wouldn't trust it to have the proper structural integrity as it would when bonding glass.

With my old 120g setup, I built a media tower out of polycarbonate for my sump without negative issues.

What leaches out of the polycarbonate?

Thank you!
