Wow, Nick, great job on that new tank, and so quickly! Looks like you put a lot of thought and work into it. Going to be a real showcase in the not too distant future.

Thanks walter i appreciate that. Its a work in progress forsure. Once all my sps takes off it will really start to look cool. It sucks though, all of the sps that had started encrusting on the rock had to be broken off and re glued. So time to start from square one.

What brand name of black sand ! I'm looking to do my tank in black sand .
But I heard of some sands having metal in them and to do my research before buy.

It is caribsea black sand. I asked the people at J&L about it and they didn't seem to know to much. The bag said on it reef safe, and good for salt water. Im just taking a chance, and am hoping it works good. Is it bad if it has metal in it? Im just hoping because its a reputable company that i should be ok.

I heard put a magnet on it if it picks up anything get it out ASAP .
But I didn't do much research on it yet. Denny from the LFS just warned me about some black sands . That tank is awesome !

Thanks I appreciate that, however now I'm slightly worried as it is a lil bit magnetic. But why is that bad? it did say reef safe, and everything seems to be doing just fine. If anybody knows anything about this please let me know because if there is an issue i will be removing this weekend.

Iron is magnetic . And I'm pretty sure that's bad. But I would look into it before going crazy . But you don't want to leech anything and have a crash .

I have done some reading online and other forums, and it appears lots of people do use the same sand I have and it is ok. The only flaws I can find about it are that is is hard to keep looking clean and black after longer periods of time, and it has less filtering ability over regular sand. Both arnt huge concerns for me. I do lots of WC anyways, and ill just make the bed deeper to make up for lack of filtration. Any other suggestions?

Here's my FTS for 2014. 180G Mixed Reef that has been running for 1 1/2 years now. Just ignore the fish trap. lol. Trying to catch all my Blue Streak Cardinals so I can replace them with some Flame Wrasses.

So stayed up all night again, but this time to redo my aquascaping on my main tank, a 165g full reef with 90g wide sump. I also added a couple of large media reactors into the sump with Hydroton so I can sell off some of my spare Live Rock to create more space for a bigger skimmer and the media reactors.

Thanks for the nice comments. The current coral placements involved getting rid of a bunch of corals and rock to allow room for the different shapes of corals to grow. Sometimes when you get a frag, you have no idea what shape it's going to take. My tabling acro surprised me, it was a 1/2" frag I got on a trade and I was told it was a purple mili. The clam I had to move around as it grew way too big. It is 13" wide. I have no idea how long it is....maybe 14 or 15"? I got it at about 4-5".

Im running 60" ATI SUNPOWER 8X80W and added few months ago 2 48" Reefbright Leds
I run 6xATI Blue Plus, 1xCoral Light Superblue and 1x ATI Coral Plus.

Far?? Its 20 minutes away lol. All you people from that side of the bridge always complain its to far. When I buy coral I have to drive out there to pick it up. When I sell coral I have to drive out there to deliver it because you are all afraid to drive out of the city more than 10 minutes. Pretty silly if you ask me. Might have to raise coral prices to cover gas and toll bridge. But thanks for the compliment :biggrin:

Yes it is the go pro Hero 4..the quality I get is amazing when downloaded on my computer but when it's uploaded to you tube it really goes downhill although I still need to play with it to figure things out.

First....please don't laugh, this tank has only been running for 2 months now. This project started about a year and a half ago with the realization a 55 just ain't gonna do...... And the subsequent acquisition of a free 12 foot long tank. It was only 10" deep though so I says "how hard could it be to build a tank? That's it. I'm building me a man cave". With a tank this big, I had to build the tank first, then I built my mancave around it. This tank has become the bane of my awesome, ever so patient wife's existence. But thru it all she may not embrace the hobby, but she at least tolerates it. Which is all I can ask.
I made 1 crtical aesthetic error that drives me over the bend. Obviously missed a bit of dust on final wipe down of primer/sealer coat and finish color coat is paint flaking in a few spots. But a guy with a beauty system, Slyguy made the pill a little easier to swallow. "Load up the tank and make sure stuff grows to cover it". There is a bit of algae on back wall but most of my fish like to graze so no harm no foul. U ROCK NICK...LMMFAO. Now the "evil reefer" bug has taken over. Gonna start moving this from pathetic mixed reef to SPS dominant....that should take a while and keep me busy.

Thanks. I apreciate that. First FTS I've ever posted (or had someone post....thanks Nick again and again). It will be cool to look back this time next year and see if I've had any success. Still a pretty wet behind the ears and can't even think of being allowed in the same room as many reefers and their stunning works of art

2 gallons, 8x6x8. There is a couple of lbs of rock, bare bottom, a par 30 led, half a teaspoon of gfo and a teaspoon of carbon in a mini hob filter along with some floss. 50-100% water changes every 1-2 weeks. This is how things are now but the tank has undergone some changes. To be honest this is the only tank I've ever had that I'm almost 100% happy with. This pico was setup June 2010.
