In case anyone else is experiencing this issue, where an instance of svchost.exe is using up all of your CPU, there is a fix

I installed it and all is good

My Desktop was useless for a couple days until I found the time to research it

Apparently the problem is coming from WinUpdate, but it's fixed with an IE patch ...

I know, it makes no sense to install an IE patch for this, but that's MicroShaft for ya

Here's the writeup (http://www.infoworld.com/t/microsoft-windows/windows-xp-update-locks-machines-svchost-redlined-100-fix-it-kb-2879017-230733) I got the links from
Apparently this issue dates back to 2002 :twised:
Sure glad I bought this Virus

Download the linked file appropriate for you
Close all your programs etc

MicroSmurf recommends you backup all your stuff first ... up to you
I have everything on another drive, so in my case, 'Just Do It'
Nothing melted

Run the download
Reboot just for giggles

For IE6 (http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=40612)

For IE7 (http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=40519)

For IE8 (http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=40390)

I think we can do without you Mac users flooding this thread

It's not IE causing the issue
It's WinUpdate

Well, as it's soon to be unsupported, that's probably not the best way to go.

We're even phasing out Vista, replacing with Win 7 and currently building images for Win 8. Always changing, keeps me employed :)

Ya, but that means I have to buy or build a new desktop

I can't even use some stuff now 'cause I'm not running IE9

My Desktop can't play vids from my iPhone as it's too slow, yet it was good enough for all the games 'back then'

Guess it's time to build another

Sigh, another expense

But for now, screw it, it's good enough for banking and surfing

Yeah, if you don't play games, xp is good enough!
I'll switch when I'm forced

City of Van still using XP... that doesn't surprise me, since they passed the door handle stuff they are too busy to update computers instead they are trying to ban the sale and use of pedal bikes because they don't cater to those without legs while they put more bike lanes in at the same time...

svchost.exe is just a wrapper for any Windows Service running on a computer or XBox. It really could be anything.

And that is why it was hard to nail down. I wasn't about to start installing a bunch more programs to find it

As I stated, in my case the IE patch did the trick
