Haha tell me why am I not surprised :P I don't know why but metallica seems to aim for very specific listeners and not all of their songs are great. I love some of their songs, my most fev including the unforgiven (all 3) and nothing else matters.

On the other hand, if I were to say for the "absolute" best metal album ever, I would pick any album of black sabbath or ozzy (blizzard of ozz came to my mind before anything). All the songs are listenable even for non-metal listeners (excluding justin bieber listeners!).

I was never able to get into Ozzy, not sure why. I won't change the channel if its on the radio but I won't play it at the gym either....well except for Paranoid.

Pantera cowboys from hell!

Was never able to get into Pantera as well. Maybe I should give it another shot...must great gym motivation!

Haha. That's understandable. Ozzy's songs are more like "opening the door for metals", only few are pumped enough for headbanging.

BTW since you are a big fan of metallica, you should give trivium a try.

The album Overcome by All That Remains is one of my favorites of all time. Cover to cover all the songs do it for me.
They have put out a few other good ones as well. This one is just tops for me.

And I do agree that Metallica has put out some of the best albums of all time, just not that metal anymore.

megadeth all the way baby , metallica came mainstream

Metallica set the stage for what was to become mainsteam, Megadeth tried to become mainstream but never gained enough popularity.

My top favorites are Metallica, Slayer, White/Rob Zombie, Danzig, Disturbed, Rammstein, Linkin Park, Sepultra

For a mixture or metal/classical/Christmas the Trans Siberian Orchestra is great and if you ever get to see them in concert you will be amazed. Extremely talented musicians.

I listen to bit symphonic metal such as Therion and Celtic Frost as well.

There is lots of others but I only listen to few of their songs.

without dave there probably wouldnt have been a metallica no?

safe to say dave wrote most of the songs with hettfield and burton in fact all the first album and most of ride the lightning.

megadeth had no choice but to try and go mainstream , remember the late 80's and early 90's?? brutal for metal with all that grunge etc. lol

hettfield , great guitarist and musician , in fact ive seen them in concert over a dozen times and met kirk(wasnt great either lol) and i give full credit to james , hes whats kept metallica going year after year to influence every great metal muscian today:)

fact is , kirks no bethoven lol

My all time fav has to be the TRUE metal GODS Judas Priest or anything from Rob Halford. His other 2 bands, FIGHT & Halford and kick ass, he also had a 3rd band called TWO.

Big Ozzy, Metalica, Megadeath, Maiden, Coheed & Cambria, Striker, Zombie, Hell Ya & Penny Wise fan but you can never forget the pioneers like Sabbath, Dio, Moterhead & naturally Priest.

There are so many versions of metal out there but Im really not a big fan of the "scream like your nuts are in a vise" form of metal like Lamb of God.

They all had a hand in the bands development but Lars actually started it. I agree that not everyone is a Kirk fan but I will give him credit that his solos actually fit the songs they are in and when people hear a part of the solo they know what song it came from. Most metal song solos just sound like they were made up on the spot and are quite forgettable.

As far as Dave goes, who else could get kicked out of a band on the way to stardom and still end up a major star with his own band. Megadeth put out some of the most influential metal albums of the 80's. I think its a true testament to his talent. As for Metallica, Dave & Cliff were the real talent, I'm sure Cliff starting rolling over in his grave in the 90's with the **** Metallica was putting out.
And how come nobody mentions Overkill??? Most underrated American Thrash Metal Band ever. Going since 1980 and still staying true to the music with both studio albums and live shows. Even through the 90's they still did what they always did weather it was mainstream or not.

I don't think I could ever pick one as I have many favorites for different reasons and it all depends on what I feel like listening to at the moment. If people are guitar fans Stratovarious and Symphony X are pretty good as well.

I am LMFAO, Bill!

Love me some metal all the way from Maiden and Deep Purple to cookie monster death metal like Devil Drivers' Before the Hangmans' Noose .

Metallica, Priest and AC/DC were the ONLY bands worth listening to through the 80s farking hair bands.

Lately, its been Godsmack, TOAD, BFMV, Korn.....a bit nostalgic I guess.

If you like long hairs 80's steel panther is hilarous . And well known in Vancouver . :p
I use to like korn .. then they went rap , dubstep , witch sucked there always looking for that sell out album ... So you never know what's next with them .

Children of bodom and chimaria inspire me .
I love all inflames and testament shows here in Calgary

Last time testament played with lamb of god.

I'm with you, JP is at the top of my list along with anything ozzy was involved with, Sabbath mainly, the true pioneers.
Metallica was just another speed metal band starting out when real music was around.

I'll add a few other bands to the list, Max Webster, Rush, Triumph, AC DC, ect..
