I have a 62gal tank 40" x 18" x 20".

The tank is Euro braced the entire inside perimeter, width pieces inside the lengthwise ones. I would like to remove one of the width braces as it is a PITA to do any work in the overflow. Removing the brace would allow me more room (as well as enabling me to use a hang on filter to run some ocasional mechanical filtration/carbon).

IA built the tank and I know they tend to overkill in the construction. Am I safe in removing the one width brace.

TIA

Scott

on that size tank I'd say your more than safe to remove just that side brace.

You might not want to be so quick to say that. What if it's 1/4" glass? Then what????

So that leads to the obvious. What is the thickness of your glass?

even at 1/4'' your fine. any store bought 65g tank has just a plastic trim with plastic cross brace. a 65g gallon with euro bracing is way over built so removing a side brace is just fine.

Thanks guys,

The glass for the tank is 10mm or 3/8".

Hello,

FYI, I am building 3 tanks (2 of 14"Hx42"Wx21"D of 53 gallons and 1 of 20"Hx25"Wx21"D of 45 gallons) of roughly the same size of various dimensions. I use 3/8" material throughout. The top for all 3 have eurobrace and the 42" wide ones have 2 front to back catwalks. Anything less than this I won't be comfortable to be with as this is the minimum requirement.

I will not even consider eliminating the catwalks. However, if it is the overflow side you may get away with a small cutout on the border brace. It really depends on the way it is done (ie where and how it is attached and stuff). You also have to watch for the cutting of the radius.

If you took that 65g and just had a cross brace that would be more than enough, so having to length braces and 1 side is plenty. I just built the 500g in my avatar.[lots of research]
