Nice Dinos! Ya, don't even get me started on those.. That's a whole other thread and bank account

You can get those custom wings for Wing Zero, on eBay for like $9. I was thinking of ordering a set of those :-) But I think they are only for the MG. Did you say your Wing Zero was a PG?

That's nice! Do you use a pen or do you wash the panel lines? And I think you said you prime ? Typically I don't prime if I'm painting the pieces the same colour as they already are. The paint I find holds onto the plastic pretty good. If intend to paint a piece a completely different colour then I'll prime.

As for finishing, I was hoping to get started with painting tonight but wasn't able to get out to pick up any paint due to the weather. Maybe tomorrow. My goals. I usually like to paint at least a base coat on all the pieces before assembly.

Do you top coat? I've never top coated any of my gundams but I'm thinking about trying a top coat when I'm done.

I use the pen, I think inking by the brush only works once you have a top coat on since the the white will be stained by the black ink. I find to do it right you need a good top coat since the wash usually consists of rubbing diluted lacquer thinner with a q tip. Top coats usually are pretty good against diluted lacquer thinner, however there is always that chance just like paint that it could thin out and mess your paint job. Even with the pen you can stain the white painted surface, the best way is to see how the pros do it and there should be tips online on inking. Nothing drives me more nuts than having a slightly stained white piece. People use white erasers to clean the pen and it works to a degree, however for the coloured pieces don't use the eraser or it will streak your paint job. Inking is the most frustrating part for sure.

Primer is really up to you, sometimes I skip the primer all together like you said. However I do prime the skeleton pieces, it gets rid of that cheap grey shine and creates a matte finish which will match the paints, looks a lot better this way. For my gundams, I use the dull coats sold in PM hobby, its made by the guys that make those american plastic cars. Comes in a black can.

Ya I prefer the flatter finish. Sometimes even a Matte finish depending on the part. Do you spray paint the larger pieces then? I use a cheap air brush but I'm having troubles locating it. Debating whether or not to get a new air brush or just rattle can the damn thing.

Lol depends on how meticulous you want, air brush takes a long time. Are you going to be sanding all then nibs off as well? If so you might as well go the full mile. Organize and cut all the pieces out, sand off all the nibs and imperfections, primer all of the pieces, sand them, air brush paint them, top coat them, ink and decal them and voila you will have a gundam worthy of a magazine.

I usually always sand my nibs. My typical work flow has been:

1. Base coat all pieces right on the runner.
2. Cut off runners, sand nibs.
3. Assemble.
4. Paint detailing, second coat, etc.
5. Decals.

Done. I'm going to try adding a step 6 for the top coat this time.

That sounds good! I would test the top coat on a painted runner first before using it on your gundam to see if you like the finish. The dull coat changes the surface color A LOT, I've sprayed non painted gundams with dull coat and they look like they have been painted after :) another benefit is that the top hides the decal edges of the stickers so it blends in more.

All this talk makes me want to get another one, oh the ich.

Ya, that's what got me interested in the top coat, to hide the decals and to maybe top coat a couple of gundams that I hadn't painted yet. I saw a top coat of an unpainted gundam and it actually looked really good! I'll use them as guinnea pigs. I also have a bunch of starships (star trek) that I can test top coats on to see if I like it.

That's pretty awesome (or at least very late at night it is).

You sir are addicted:mrgreen:, makes me wanna pick one up, just maybe... They have gundam x is mg now.

Ha thanks :-). I actually only built the first two, Deathscythe and Wing Zero. The other three are not models. They are from the Metal Build series. Although if you count the dozen or so Real Grade and High Grade kits I built with my son, then Ya I've built a few over the last couple of months:lol:

For myself I'm working on a Master Grade Heavyarms at the moment :-)

Yup. I definitely crossed over to addiction territory  the good thing about Gundams is that they don't die one you for no apparent reason.

Ahhh, that's awesome! I remember my friend ordered around 10 gundams all at once. All kinds... PG, RG, MGs from hobbylink to save on shipping, it worked out to be roughly 20-25 percent cheaper than retail stores. All I said when I saw the amount of gundams he had was "It's going to be a headache building all those for summer break." Long behold 2 months of summer has past, he hasn't gone outside for weeks and the only thing on his mind was to try to sell the unopened ones to me at a discounted price. :P

Funny, that's exactly what I did! LOL. I ordered a dozen kits from hobbylink japan and actually ended up saving quite a bit of money. So far I'm averaging one Master Grade kit a month.. but partly I also help my son complete some of his kits (HG and RG). They are addictive and I can't see the addiction subsiding anytime soon. The other good thing about this hobby is that you can pause , take a break and restart anytime you want and nothing will die on you. LOL.

I think I mentioned previously that I built HG Gundam Wing kits back in the mid 90s. These newer master grade and real grade kits are something else though. Definitely brings the hobby to the next level.

The other aspect that I'm enjoying again is watching the shows. I decided to start watching all the Gundam shows from the start.

At the end of the day it's a great pastime for my son and I to enjoy together. He's 6 and can put together any HG or RG kit together by himself. I help him with the decals. He's even started to paint now. I love that he loves the hobby.

 your son must be one happy camper, having access to so many gundams. I think this hobby beats the video games that the younger generation is exposed to. Nothing beats the joy of looking at a gundam you spent 3-4 days straight to complete.

Haha, good thing I am a single and live at home. The only thing my parents can't stand is the paint fumes when I bring in the pieces after painting outside. Funny story... I once decided it was a good idea to paint a whole gundam inside my room in the middle of winter with no ventilation. I had night terrors dreaming about suffocation for 2 nights, might of been the fumes.

P.S Everything thing in my room is geared towards steering girls away... car parts, fish tanks, and plastic models and what do they have in common? I spend more time with them than I will with any girl, lol.

Indeed, it isn't a great hobby if you're trying to pick up chicks

My wife actually loves the hobby. It engages my son and he's building something, rather than sitting in front of the TV or playing video games like most of his friends these days.

My son pays for his own Gundams with money that he earns by doing chores, his homework, getting good grades on tests, etc. He's 6 and has learned the value of saving. He can buy a HG Gundam for $20 or save a bit more if he wants a Real Grade for $30.

Some come with stands, some don't usually you can find out by looking at the box pictures. If there is a unique stand rather than the standard octagon stand chances are it comes with it. You should start up and join the Kien in the dark side :). You should buy your girls the pink strike/ nobel gundam, they might like it. Nobel looks like sailor moon ahahaha.

Holy crap! I want that Sinanju ! I have no idea where is put it though.

I kinda don't mind that they don't include stands because there are many different varieties. My Wing Zero came with a stand but It kinda sucks and is rather buy a new one for it. Also, some Gundams are fine just standing by themselves without a stand.
