Introduction:

After many years in this hobby, I have finally pulled the trigger and decided to document my current tank and share it with others. Hopefully it can help others who want to walk down a similar path as me. I have always been into small tanks, I use to have a 12x12x15 cube. However I found space to be limiting and being a all in one system it was honestly an eyesore when it comes to equipment hanging off the back. From that moment on I knew I needed to have a clean and efficient set-up where minimal equipment is in the display section. Here is my link to the old tank, I didn't make any effort to keep the thread alive. For you wondering what happened to the all the LPS and softies, I have sold most of them and unfortunately due to ignorance and neglect some withered away. Here's the link: http://www.nano-reef.com/topic/290971-gqlmaos-94-cube-new-snowflakes-fragrack/

On to the New Set-up:

I had the tank and sump custom built by a LFS Concept Aquariums, whom had exceeded my expectations with the overall quality and service. The tank was designed so I can hide 2 Vortech MP10 WES in a water free camber with the internal overflow. I decided to run an internal because I wanted it to have that clean 1 piece look with the stand and allow for the tank and stand to sit closer to the wall. Noise was a huge concern for me, the tank is going to be in my room therefore I needed to make sure it was dead quiet. A herbie overflow system is implemented in this tank, this way I am able to dial the overflows so no air gets inside allowing for quiet circulation.

Equipment:

Tank:

-Custom 30x18x14 3/8" starphire glass on all 4 sides

-Bevelled and polished

-6 Inch internal overflow with 3.5"x4" chamber for MP10s

-2x1" Overflows, 1X3/4" Return

Stand:

-Custom 30"Lx18"Wx32"H 1"x1"x.125" HSS steel stand

Sump:

-Custom 26x14x16 glass Sump

Flow:

-Currently running 2 MP10WES on 70 percent, long pulse mode with anti-sync

-Might add third MP10 (already have), the way I have it set up really limits the flow.

-Speed wave DC 790GPH return pump

Filtration:

-Super Reef Octopus 1000-int Skimmer

-4" Vertex filter socks

-Approx 20 lbs of life rock + 10 lbs currently cycling in separate bucket

-Cheato

-Two Little Fishies Phosban reactor 150, running HC GFO and ROX Carbon

Lighting:

-Ecotech Radion XR30W Gen 2

Other Equipment:

-2x Ehiem Jaeger 100 watt heaters

-Tunze 3155 osmolator auto top off

-600LPH Ehiem pump

-3 Channel Kameor dosing pump

-2 Small computer fans for ventilation

-1500Watt Cyber Power back UPS for return pump and 1 heater

Livestock:

2 Grade B Snowflake Clowns

1 Helfrichi Firefish

1 Multicolor Dwarf Angelfish

1 Cleaner Shrimp

1 Fire Shrimp

PICS:

I just got a DSLR with a 100mm macro lens, I'm new to phtography and the learning curve is steep. I will do my best to research and will try to get some better pics and macro shots soon!

Some macro shots, I am a total beginner at it. It's a T5i with EF 100mm 2.8 macro lense. If you guys got tips throw them at me. So far I am finding a very small aperture (32f), longer shutter speed (1 sec), iso 400, no flash to give me useable pictures. If you got some advice I would appreciate it!

Thanks! I got the stand as a steel frame from concept to fit the aquarium. then I went got some quarter inch plywood, painted it black. Thanks to Kien's ingenious thinking, he told me to go to Ikea and source out some panels to match.

Looks great!

I really like the stand too. Who made it?

Nice set-up and nice corals. With the pics, I recently learned to use a manual white balance setting with the LED lighting (otherwise you get a blue/purple hue). I pointed the camera at the white sand to get my white balance setting. But anything white under the LEDs will work.

PS: Good choice on your LED lighting...

Thanks! I will have to look into white balance, unfortunate I don't have any sand or white things in the tank. I might just cut a piece of white plastic and use that instead. I have noticed it is very hard to avoid the blue hue with the led setup, I have to use a ton of temperature correction to get the colors back to perspective.

I like the Radion, sleek, allows for tons of adjustment and shimmer. I run them at a pretty high output, the corals don't seem to mind after the initial acclimatization. But I have always been wondering... how would the tank look with a set up T-5s. I miss the purple/blue combo also the tank being 24 inches long I am having issues getting light to the corals in the far back. It appears that I have to go higher but any higher its going to bother the heck out of me when I use my computer.

Wow, that's looking sweet! Love the stand. Very classy

Your pics are pretty good too. You could use a bit more exposure on them maybe. You can either bump up the exposure during post processing with an image editor, or, if you're finding that your pics straight out of the camera are under exposed based on the exposure metering that your camera is giving you (aperature and shutter and ISO), then try turning up the exposure compensation.

Photographing tanks is challenging for SLRs because the lighting, the glass, the water, and the subject can all mess with the camera's built in light/exposure meter. A lot of the time you have to adjust whatever the camera gives you, or redirect (exposure wise) what the camera thinks is a 'good image'.

I would also recommend getting at tripod. The 100mm macro lens is a great lens, but when shooting at 100m every little movement from your camera (hand shake) will register in the image (as blurry). If you have the IS version of the 100mm macro that will help, but I would still put it on a tripod. Tripods are cheap and will produce A LOT more usable images.

Finally, HOLY FRAK I want to see more Gundams ! Maybe sneak in a few close ups of those beauties

wow that took longer than expected.

Love the stand and wow that looks like a square footprint in the pics I was having a tough time at first believing it was 30" front to back. Tank looks great and your scape is unique too.

For your first macros those look awesome. At the very least I would shoot a particular shot at various settings and focus on different areas then just pick the best later.

Sweet start to your zoa garden!

Thanks! Good thing I asked you about your awesome panels that day or the stand would still be plain Jane.

I will try to fiddle around the settings some more tonight. I left exposure compensation out of the equation last night, so I will muck around with that as well. I found that even a slight tilt in the camera angel to the glass distorts the macro shot. It's really hard to get close in especially when I have to place the lens as close to perpendicular to the glass as possible. I am currently using a tripod, since I have such a slow shutter speed.

Haha, my gundams are full of dust right now. They have been that way since I was in school and that was a couple of years ago:redface:. One day when I get better at photography, I will throw in a couple shots. I don't think many on Canreef know what these things even are!

Now that you pointed that out, the pictures do look like a square tank. The display part is only 24x18x14, so it does come close to a square foot print. I will leave it on a tripod and same spot and tamper with the settings tonight. For me, its easier to learn by practice and experimenting. ::biggrin:

Calling it a zoa garden is an overstatement, I am getting 1 polyp growth per month or two. So if I wait a couple of years I might be able to cover those frag blocks :P

Small tanks have always been a hit for me. Especially when it comes down to SPS, a large tank is way to costly to set up. Speaking of SPS and nano tanks, I've seen your thread and know you are a big fan of both

I don't have any pictures currently, but I will snap some tonight. But I can try to describe it in words. Basically its just a internal overflow, 6 inches deep. In the middle of the overflow area, I had ask concept to throw in a box that is right behind the overflow glass. The box is the same height as the panels of the tank and right above the emergency overflow drain, therefore water free.

Ah... the perfect grades, they are a little too much work for me, not to mention big! One PG would take me at least a week or two to paint, build, ink. I am a big fan of MGs they are much cheaper, require less work, and they can be posed in smaller areas. I will get some pictures after I get off the dust that has been accumulated.

Barely, I think I just need to take lots more pictures. I don't know if it is the leds but pictures are really dark when I shoot the side profile of the acros. It is probably the hard shadows, rendering certain positions impossible without a flash.

I've come to realize that both from taking pictures and coral response, I might need a second unit and angle the lights to overlap, or go t-5s. I finally realized how limiting 1 led unit can be especially when you are trying to cover a 24"x18" area. Certain areas don't get enough light.

Gundam wing introduced me to the Gundam series.then went to Gundam Seed and Destiny,Gundam 007,Gundam Unicorn, and now Gundam Build Fighter.my fav of all is Wing Zero, which I had to travel back to the Philippines to obtain.

Woah, I should call this thread would you like a reef tank with those gundams :P. Gundam Wing was what got me hooked. My favorite is wing gundam zero, I think the wings and the slender body design make that gundam simply the best looking one. Next is strike, then Exia seven swords. I like clean simple gundams, now I gotta take some pictures. What's a thread without pictures.

I used to listen to J pop back in junior high, and since I am a anime nut I still heard the odd song here and there in intros and endings.

On a serious note: I think I am going to do it. I am going to go back to T-5s. I have noticed the corals in the back arent getting enough light from one set up and I am not getting growth in a lot of the shaded areas of the SPS. I was thinking of going to the ATI Sunpower 24" 8x24W fixture. The fixture is 17.5" wide leaving around 15" for actual bulb length, my tank being 18" wide if I hang it semi low I shouldn't have much light spill. As for the corals, I am blasting the radions at 85 percent so there shouldn't be an intensity issue with the 8 bulb setup, of course lighting acclimation will be done to be safe. Anyone want to pitch in some advice or direction?

I ran a 6 bulb ATI power module on one of my reef tanks with corals near the surface and none of them showed any signs of stress. You're more likely to burn you corals on LEDs than T5s I think. I think that 24" sun power will work great over your tank. The great thing about T5s is the all enveloping spread of light that it blasts out, as opposed to the near pin-point laser beams that LEDs throw out :-)

Actually, I did buy a couple of 1/144 scale gundams from Pheonix comics in Calgary once, and one from Chinook Hobby. Totally forgot about those places. I would be interested to hear about those dedicated places in Calgary though, as I have never been! I stopped collecting when I had kids (and started my current tank) a few years ago. I want to crack open open a box or two this winter break though. My son really likes them too, except that I don't let him play with them.

They are all in china town. If you go into dragon city mall, go upstairs and there will be in a small little shop. The shop is glass on 3 sides? You can't miss it, it has gundam boxes and anime figures pretty much on the glass wall. That one has a lot of models.

I go to another one across the street (across from dragon city parking lot) its called Far East Shopping Centre, its in a little strip mall and inside there are two shops that sell them. I go to the one with the old couple running it, they usually have slightly better prices and I hagel.

Actually, the shop in Dragon City Mall was closed :( I was kinda bummed about that. The shop behind DCM was open though and that guy was cool. Got to Gundam Geek out and he gave me a sweet discount. I found some easy Gundam Age-1s for my son to build as well as he has been interested in them since watching Pacific Rim a few weeks ago.

I've been out of Gundams for a while now (since getting married and starting a family) and all my old Gundams (mostly Gundam Wings) are boxed up somewhere. I've been trying to find that box to dust them off and put them back on display. I suspect that box is at my parents somewhere.

Ever since watching Pacific Rim I've been interested in getting back into building Gundams but thanks to you I am officially back at it now haha. Thanks a lot Stanely..

I have a PG, its wing gundam. It took me over a week to build, with the newer PGS, especially strike freedom PG its even bigger and badder than ever with way more pieces. My friend collects gundams and hes most of the PGs even made. I don't like PGs, I like MGs since they are smaller, cheaper and take up less room and not to mention a lot more posable, there usually involves lots of joint modifications on PGs since they are so heavy.

http://www.dalong.net This guy has every gundam in his collection, this is where I go to see which ones I want since he will have new ones prior to release since hes sponsored.

haha ya, pretty much..

I have a Deathscythe in 1/144 HG and have always wanted a 1/100. I'll start with this to see how it goes. I doubt I will collect any PGs as I find them too big as well. I don't have the space for it at all. Or maybe just one PG down the road.. (that Astray Red Frame looks so bad ass). Mostly I'm interested in the MG of this modern age. All of mine are HG 1:144 with just a couple of HG 1:100. What they've done with the MG these days is just insane! And even the Real Grades look really good and still affordable. I'll probably end up with a few Real Grades as well before the year is out.

I will have some light flood but it's something I can live.

8 bulbs?! That would be way too overkill for a 14" high tank isinit? I got myself the 6 bulb since I thought 8 bulbs would be too much for my acans and some other LPS that I might keep down the road.

It will be fine, the dimmable fixtures will be helpful in that respect. I run my radion at almost 90 percent right now, the pieces near the top aren't really showing any signs of bleaching, all about the properly acclimating the corals. I have no LPS in the tank so I am not too worried about excessive lighting.

Do you know rehypes tank? it was a 24x24x9 high, it was running 6 bulbs + 2 led strips.

Wow, very nice! Makes me want to switch to all T5s too! You'll find that photographing under the T5s is A LOT easier too :-)

.. I do miss my ATI Powermodule.

Yes sir! I don't miss the LEDs at all... Just kidding the T-5s are too bulky if that is one complaint I have. Photography is very nice under T-5 I don't have to shut off my pumps, nor worry about discoball effects. Very uniform and I love how it looks when I stand back in a dark room.

Had some time for some quick pics! The corals are still getting used to the lighting, I am starting to see color changes in a couple SPS pieces. The surprising part is I don't even have the light running more than 3 hours!! It's been rough trying to get the corals use to the T5s, they are so powerful.

This one is actually neon yellow:

Just a small update:

I have been noticing a decline in my montipora and birdsnest for some reason. After reading online I had a hunch it was a potassium deficiency. My current vodka dosing is .5ml per day split into two doses, 3 hours prior to feeding and right after feeding. I suspect the additional carbon source is generating more bacteria, therefore slowly up taking the potassium. I guess over the course of 3 months it took its toll and by using a salt low in potassium and I started noticing these affects more and more after 4-5x 10 percent water changes. I decided to give potassium a shot, after dosing and switching to a salt with higher trace elements, the colors have come back significantly.

I have noticed that the majority of my SPS were darkening to the point where it was brown... I have stopped using KZ vitalizer, pohl's xtra, SPS amino acids, LPS amino acids and sponge power all together. The only thing I use is coral snow to allow for water clarity and to possibly bond to small organic waste that the skimmer otherwise isn't able to pull out. I have stopped the KZ for approx. 4 days and the results are considerably better, the dark tissue began to lighten and I can start to see the actually colors again. I suspect that there wasn't any need of the AAs at this time in my tank, I do feed heavily once a day. Once the corals lighten up more, I will begin dosing KZ in small moderate amounts to see if I can tweak everything to how I wanted.

I am able to ramp my lights up to around 5 hours for the 6 bulb channel and 9 hours for the 2 bulb channel at 100 percent, my SPS seem to be getting really use to it and I am seeing significant color changes on the blues, and purples,. Greens are good. Reds and pinks will need more work... I suspect it was too much KZ giving my corals unneeded nutrients causing excessive amounts of zooxanthellae to hide the actual colors. I should see better results in a couple weeks time!

Just wanted to post some tank details and current situation since I have noticed that this thread was more of a photo dump. If you have any suggestions feel free to chime in.

That sounds reasonable and i would agree with your assessment. Sounds like you've got it all under control. Just remember, brown doesn't mean dead, so there's hope. Keep on reefin' on :-)

Thanks Kien!

Well, since I moved everything to my old little cube, things are looking better. I would say certain zoas will need atleast a week or two before they get back to their original size and color. Overall I am happy that I did it,

On to some pictures, the tank is lit by only Royal Blue Leds. Color balanced is pretty much maxed out with the camera and editor, any more yellow would create excessive noise.

I am still using both fixtures, I have the radions over my little LPS and zoa tank. In my opinion LPS and zoas look the best under RB leds, T-5s don't give me enough of that fluorescent pop. I am using the T-5s in my SPS tank, I cannot give you a direct comparison when I was using the 2 since I would need another Radion fixture to match the coverage of the T-5s. However after going T-5s on SPS, I would not go back to LEDs unless something game changing comes out, all depends on personal preference. Some good things with T-5s, uniform coverage, no spot light affects, very uniform and gradual spectrum, no discoball effects.

Thanks Kien. I have some more reef raft stuff, I just haven't posted them up yet. When they start colouring up the way I want them to, I will post some more pictures. I actually have some frags I made about a month and a half ago. PM me if you would like more details :).

Yes I acquired most of them through Fragbox, some through Concept and some through Bigshowfrags. I actually have a lot more RR pieces but my tank isn't exactly tip top shape yet. Still waiting for pieces to color up, the pieces I posted are probably 60 percent of the way there. On a side note, my RR purple monster is starting to color up like yours, only after 2 months of sitting idle. :)If you were curious on what other pieces I have, heres the list:

RR Jumba Juice
RR Wolverine
RR Pink Floyd
RR Red Bull
RR Red Diablo
RR Blue Matrix
RR Pink Matrix
RR CJ Pinky
RR Poison Ivy
RR Orange Passion
RR Purple Monster
RR unknown pieces
RR Blue Peacock
RR Subzero
Purple Planet
Strawberry Shortcake (2 types)
RR Pearlberry
Tyree Pink Lemonade

For sure! My tank is still working out the kinks... It will be another few months till the colors really pop and I will be taking more pictures then. So far I can tell, most of the RR stuff are decent growers.

A small update, some more Reef Raft and SPS Pieces for the SPS fans, I am very happy that the colors are coming on. I think a couple more months and I will have something more substantial to show:

Strawberry Short Cake, it has been paling and losing color around the base ever since it touched my tank. It has stopped, I think my light is a little too much, hopefully it will recovered.

Fiji piece, it was completely brown, then completely bleached, now it has recovered somewhat:

Thanks guys! Yes, unfortunately I think my decision on having certain fishes in these tanks will force me to either return them to the LFS or put them up for sale in a few months time. I dread the time where I am going to have to rip apart my tank to net them.

dont rip it apart, Just borrow some rubbermaid bins. drain, scoop, refill... Painless. Thats what Brad (Aquattro) does with his 180.

I apologize for the lack of updates. I have been having a busy summer and some problems with my acans. I have lost close to 25 pieces already. I still haven't found an apparent reason. It has been tough watching all my prized pieces die slowly... I have tried everything, coral rx, revive, hydrogen peroxide even flat worm exit to see if there was any parasitic worms. To this day I am still losing my acans very slowly. The flesh dies from the inside out. I have been reading horror stories of people losing acans left right and center and I guess I have contracted something very bad for LPS in my tank.

The good news is my I have acquired several rare zoas and they have been flourishing and my SPS are doing great, sizes have tripled for some frags and colors have been getting better. Pictures will follow soon!

Have you tried a interceptor dip? I remember reading on reef central a while back about these tiny little black bugs that would eat acans. People were quite successful dipping them in interceptor. I'll see if I can find the thread for you.

I have read about that, I don't see any black bugs on them. I am sure if I had the black bugs, the hydrogen peroxide would of killed atleast a few and I would of saw them in my white bucket. I have a few acans left, if those start to decline I will have to try interceptor as the final resort, thanks.

The first one is the pink floyd, the tips are yellow. The third to last one is wolverine. My wolverine has taking a strange shape since its growing so fast. The base is actually green. I wonder how its going to look 6 months to a year from now.

Here is some pictures of some of my zoas, I am keeping them under mostly actinic leds at low settings, I noticed that the zoas were a lot bigger because they needed to absorb more like and the florescence has dropped somewhat due to the bigger sizes. These pictures were taken with the whites on to help balance out the colors, there wont be as much "pop". Some of the pictures have glare in them, I had no way to avoid that since my Radion is right above of my coral viewer and the plastic reflects a portion of the light back.

Big thanks to March at Fragbox for hooking me up with the majority of these zoas a few months back :)

I know people are going to ask about the names so I will post them with the pictures.

I am currently dosing vodka (3ml), vinegar (12ml), Sodium Bicarbonate (80ml), Calcium chloride (50ml), magnesium S/C (8ml), I use Fauna Marin color elements and balling light trace elements with my 2 part.

As for nutrients additives, I have been trying to stay away from Zeovit products, I still use a little here and there, I am finding that the PE is much better with Zeovit.
