Well I had my tank setup before I was a member on here so I never got to start a tank thread, so here's a new start.
I went away on vacation in the begining of Sept and I came back to find that my housesitter put some scratches in my tank. They are minor but as most of you also suffer from OCD when it comes to your tank, it just bothers me that they are there. And people don't notice the scratches until I point them out.
Well it was my wifes relatives that caused the scratches. Well she feels bad about it so I now have the go ahead for a new tank. My build will probably be up and running near Xmas.
So far this is all i've got. Should have the tank by mid Nov
1 1/2" steel stand. 60" long 30" wide and 36" tall. I went for a taller stand as I hate bending down to look at a tank. It should support 5000lbs. The sump will be in my basement as one won't find in the stand anyways due to the side braces.

Nice stand Bill, I like taller as well, my DIY built in stand is 37" tall. Is your new tank getting custom built by the guy in Calgary?

Looks like a good start. Looking forward to seeing this tank setup. I'm sure it will be sweet.

Sump in basement not in stand.

Yup, Concept is building it. Paul from Oceanic Corals is looking after it all for me. It'll be the same same size as the stand but only 30" deep. I just went with normal glass, black silicone, eurobraced with a coast to coast overflow and herby drains. The stand is going to a cabinet maker to be skinned to match the cabinets in my house. I want to paint the stand white first. Powdercoating wont be neccesary as sump will be in basement. This will be a slow build as my wife has no idea of costs involved. Saving up my allowance for the funding:lol:
Relatives made me the stand for free so that is a huge savings.

Those diagonals should make that stand earthquake proof. I've done many build by putting aside allowance money. It's good in a way because you have time I between stages to really think and plan.

Great tank dimensions Bill
I don't envy you reaching the back, but I sure wish my tank had all that space for scaping - and a coast to coast

Have you decided yet if you're going to stick with your current equip ?

Haha I wish my wife liked the dimensions. She thinks it's too big and does'nt want to part with the my round tank. It does look good where it's placed.
Yea the overflow will take up 6" but will still have 24" for aquascaping. I'm going to see if a 4" wide overflow will be able to work.
Yes I plan on using all of my old equipment. I guess a list of my equipment should be part of my journal too eh?

I wish I had a basement to put my sump in, great for doing water changes too. I take it your using the same sump on the new system?

Madreefer
10-17-2013, 03:43 PM
Yea basement sumps are great. I have an unfinished basement. I never get in trouble for spilling water. Plus the basement is scarey so my wife doesn't go down there much. Yes I'll be using the same sump. For now:biggrin:

hi bill

i took the liberty of making you a drawing.

in this design i went with a semi coast to coast overflow , by doing so it allows both of your returns to be tee'd off and ran on either side of the overflow box and will be hidden by the acrylic back panel, a slip x threaded bulkhead is then used with loc-line and flow dispurser.

i did it as a bean animal with 2 x 1 1/2" drains and a 2" emergency drain

both returns are 1" and a valve(union BV preferably) on both returns are used to control flow.

this design allows you to access your ball valves from the back of the display without having to reach in your box , it also allows the maximum volume to aqua scape with.

by doing a bean animal you allow yourself a bit less tuning of the herbies gate , but in turn will cost a bit more in plumbing as you are adding an extra drain.

1 is a full syphon, 2 is a trickle or so and the emergency stays dry untill its ever needed(god forbid)

here some jpegs i made i can adjust anything you like if you just tell me what you would like to change and the dimensions you would prefer.

sorry for the delay buddy and hope you dont mind me poisting this public to help with design.

60 x 30 x 36h
19mm all around

Hey Denny! I like it. But i only want it 30" tall. I'm no giant.
My only concern is that I really don't want my tank to stick out too far as this is the area it will be going in. I have to keep the wife some what happy. She already thinks it's too big

http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/hh135/gulflube/fragplumbing005.jpg (http://s255.photobucket.com/user/gulflube/media/fragplumbing005.jpg.html)

I only have 5 1/2" from my wall at the moment. I'm worried about being able to reach behind to adjust or even plumb it.

http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/hh135/gulflube/fragplumbing006.jpg (http://s255.photobucket.com/user/gulflube/media/fragplumbing006.jpg.html)

As you can see it's in a bay window so with the round tank I can reach behind.
Another question. Is this black acrylic wall going to cover the whole back pane of glass? Cuz it wouls dave me from having to paint it.
I'd like the plumbing to go with it as well. When Paul places the order please tell him of any extra charges as well.
Thanks man

we can always go internally as well , if reaching behind the tank will be an issue by going internal all your plumbing will come out from the bottom of the tank , we can do your returns out the overflow body if you like?

if you like bill i can do a internal drawing for you and we can go from there?:)

the acrylic i do a full panel if its external unless the customer request otherwise(vinyl for example) internal we do acrylic on the overflow box and vinyl on the back, so yours right now as it stand is a full gloss black panel on the back with no vinyl.

if theres anything you want to add we can add it to your crate, payment and order will be made through paul but we can accomodate anything he may not have in stock:)

cheers

Oh my build seems so slow. Picked up 4 20lbs bags of sand, 2 Atlantic Crushed Coral and 2 Aragonite Sand. This cost me $120 locally. What would you guys have paid in the bigger city's? I'm going to be using about 5lbs of my old sand for seeding this stuff. I would really like to use straight sugar sand which I now use in my tank right now. I keep reading that people have huge sandstorms using the Vortech MP40s. I have never once had a sandstorm in my tank now using 2 and 1 MP10 at 100% but it must just be from the curvature of the half circle glass. So i'm not taking any chances since i'm going to a rectangular tank and will be running 4 MP40s on it. My last rectangular tank was 5 tanks ago.

I guess a lot depends on how open the aquascaping is. I had sandstorms even with heavier sand but eventually the sand gets tired of blowing around and settle in

So did you enjoy the rinsing part?

 Atleast you have a backyard/place to clean it. Being a resident in apartment, bathtub and tap were my only option and swimming with 50lb of sand particles in there was no fun! Itchy itchy!

One thing I have learned (personal opinion) is, if you don't like something outside the tank, there's a higher possibility that you would regret it inside  And everyone loves caribsea fiji pink  I have seen that brand of sand in stores but never liked the look of it.

With the crap I had to put up with shipping with Greyhound and now this, it just makes a guy want to just say the heck with it and sell it all and get out of the hobby. I cant get my arm wet and all the mysterious creepies and bacterias in my wound probably would put me right back in the hospital. But if there's a will there's a way.

Was it like this out of the box? Damage from shipping?

It was very well packed. I received it 3 weeks ago and I wasn't able to thoroughly inspect it until I was able to get it in the house. It's passed the water test so tank transfer is today. As bad as the chips look I've found a solution that would be easier than the hassle of sending it back a province away. I'm going to put some wood moulding that matches my stand around the edge of my tank. Finished the plumbing yesterday and today's the big day. Will post pics later.

Well it took three days to finally get my tank up and running. I only lost a my pistol shrimp. Could'nt find him when I took the half circle down, i'm sure he's dead as I have'nt heard the snapping in the new tank yet.
her's my stand. There's alot of unused space in it as everythings in my basement so I thought i'd make my wife happy and put a wine fridge in it. The stand is 38" tall. No bending down to look at the tank.

http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/hh135/gulflube/jan14017.jpg (http://s255.photobucket.com/user/gulflube/media/jan14017.jpg.html)

I put felt on the bottom of the stand so I could push it across the floor. I had to have all the plumbing done as I wanted my tank transfer to be quick and easy.

http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/hh135/gulflube/jan14005.jpg (http://s255.photobucket.com/user/gulflube/media/jan14005.jpg.html)

I used the outer holes for my main drains and the two inner holes for my emergency drains. I went with the Herby design.
Here's the plumbing

http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/hh135/gulflube/jan14006.jpg (http://s255.photobucket.com/user/gulflube/media/jan14006.jpg.html)

Inside the stand, I anchored it all cause I was'nt sure of the weight of the water in the pipes and did'nt want any stress on the bulkheads.

http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/hh135/gulflube/jan14007.jpg (http://s255.photobucket.com/user/gulflube/media/jan14007.jpg.html)

Flex tube to go from tank in to basement, figured it was was easier than using PVC pipe.

Haha yea I don't like wine either, well the next day. It's for my wife. My beer fridge is in the garage. Stand was built by a cabinet company. There is no holes at all drilled in to the stand. The panels all screw to each other and than corner peices are placed over the screws. The top is a 3/4 piece of plywood. It's wider than my door so I had to assemble it in my house. It's pretty heavy. The steel stand is 188lbs and the wood is maple so I'm not sure what that weighs.

Did you register/set your manual WB against a white background in your tank? I used the sand bottom, and it worked for me.

asylumdown
01-06-2014, 04:12 PM
I've tried that, but this long in none of my sand is truly white anymore. The bulk of it has turned greyish the same way my Marco rocks have gone from blinding white to 'live rock grey', and about every 4th grain has gone purple from coralline. There are some white grains still in places that have been disturbed, but from the camera's perspective it all evens out to a solid grey. The best I've been able to do is to try to correct in photoshop after the fact because you can zoom right in an select one truly white pixel on one grain of sand. Sometimes it works and produces a 'true to life' output, and sometimes it produces an acid trip.

My roommate bought a waterproof lumix camera for her trip to Hawaii and it has settings specifically for different depth of water and I've found that one has taken the best images overall in terms of colours. iPhones... not so much.

Well after 2 years of using Sols I've finally come across a problem with one of them. I don't know why but one of my fixtures has decided not to ramp up or down with the rest of the lights. It seems to be stuck at 100%. I'm just waiting for a couple more wireless adapters to show up and see if that'll fix the problem. I'm hoping it's just the data cable connection.

I'll be running the 2 red LED fixtures for 18hrs a day. Supposedly red grows algae. I may have to get some pieces of plastic to block the light from every where else. I'm a little curious to see how this expirement turns out. I guess I really am old school now:lol:

Well I got some good new today from AquaIllumination.
Here's the email conversation and the light is over 2 years old.

Hello,

Thanks for the information and sorry to hear of the issues with the light. Have you tried unplugging the data cable and reentering to see if it is a bad connection? Or, have you tried using a different data cable to that light? Lastly, have you tried plugging the controller directly into that light only to see if it is controllable without being tied together in chain?

Please let us know, thank you.

- Justin

February 26, 2014 11:32 . Billcorr Yes I have tried all of the above. The controlability of this light seems to be no longer working. At this point I just plug the 1 light in for 4hrs a day, I have enough light with my other fixtures to keep up with my SPS. I'm currently running 4 Sol Blues and 2 Hydras. I plan on replacing 2 of the Sols for Hydra 52's in 2 months time. All depending on whats happening with this merge.

February 26, 2014 15:16 . Aquaillumination Support Team

C2 Development, Inc.Thanks for the update. It sounds like the motherboard inside of the light is causing this issue unfortunately and would need to be replaced in order to gain control back to the light. If you would like, we can just send out a new board to you this time as a gesture to say thank you for your support you have shown over the years, we would just ask that you pay shipping for the board. If you would please provide your shipping information, I can get a quote for you (appears you may live in Canada so prices will vary). Thank you,

So, the new Hydra 52s are pretty powerful so I took off the Sols from my lightrack and really dont see a difference with them off. So the Sols I guess will be sold. So i'm just running with 2 Hydras and 2 Hydra 52's. I'm experiencing a few tiny spots of cyano that show up every once in a while that drives me nuts. Very minimal but as most reefers i'm very picky and suffer from a little OCD:lol:
I'm thinking it's caused by the algae turf scrubber I built, so I took it off today. I noticed a bit of cyano growing on the screen, so out the scrubbber goes. Thought it may be from spent filters in all of RO cannisters and changed them as well as the membrane. I also took down my 90G frag/refuge tank and replaced with a 25G frag tank and it's now lit with one of my Sols. So in doing that 60lbs of liverock is also out of my system. Other than losing my naso tang all other livestock and corals doing well.

An no pics? Reefers are OCD about that too.

Here ya go. Couple of top downs, the new Hydra 52s are pretty bright and I bleached my corals. I've turned the intensity down quite a bit. But really they are brighter than that, i'm no photographer:lol:

Picked up a couple of sweet tangs from Paul at Oceanic Corals and they're fitting in nicely.

Yup your right Jessie. It's also known as a white freckle face tang and the other tang is an orange shoulder tang.

Nice that freckled tang is a favorite of mine BLACK EARED TANG (Maculiceps tang) never got one cause they get massive and have a bad temperament I heard. That fish might need a ride on the bus in a few years

Haha yea ok bud. But we've been down that road before. I'd be delivering it myself. Good to know that it'll have a place to live when he gets evicted.

I guess I haven't updated since May. Not sure if guys even read these but will update for my own records I guess.

Well I had to go to CN Academy in Winnipeg for a month so all tank duties were left for my wife and she did a great job.
So home for 2 weeks and we left for 5 days for a family emergency. Well a relative looked after my tank (same one that scratched up my old half circle).
I walked in the house to see air bubbles coming from my returns. Not his fault as ATO was stuck. Come feeding time no orange shoulder tang, no red fairy wrasse and 2 missing yellow headed gobies.
Also noticed that mesh screen is full of gross gunk. Apparently he was too lazy to lift off the feeding door I built to dump food in.

Well now I'm ****ed so figured I'd start to dismantle. First thing I did was take my frag tank down. Too bad as it was jammed packed but in PG you can't sell a frag for $10 that'll sell in Lower Mainland for $50. I only seem to get hits when something is up for free. So in the trash they went. I beleive in payin it forward but I guess it's not the case in this hobby.
After a couple of days and several Corona I've had a change of heart. Plus reading bout the Maxspect Gyre has me intrigued.
Well sorry for the rant.
But hey the tanks looking good other than a few hundred dollars of fish gone:sad:

That sucks Bill, sorry to hear about your losses. Seems problems always happen when your not there to deal with them :(

Pretty frustrating. There is a new Facebook page called Prince George BC Saltwater Community with 30-40 members. You could try selling some frags there. Mostly all they want are mushrooms and zoanthids though. I've been turning many of my SPS into Calcium Reactor fuel lately.

Well I decided to remove some clutter from my tank. Out with the 5 Tunzes I had in there.

I bought 2 of the Maxspect Gyres. Pretty cool and really happy with how compact they are. Unfortunatley one of them was defective so I only have one running at the moment until I can get parts or a replacement.

I like that they can be placed so high to the water line as they do
not stick out like a sore thumb like most of the un-natural looking things we put in our tanks for flow etc. So my hatred of cords in a tank is'nt so bad as it's not too easily seen:lol: The magnets are fairly strong and the pump does'nt move around at all and no rattling like I had with the Vortechs when out of alignment. I also ike that the cages can be moved to direct flow. Coming with an extra set of propellors is also a bonus. Only complaint is the fancy packaging, could of went with a basic cardboard box to keep costs down and price too.

I'm running the one I have right now at 100% and yes it is a little noisy but not near as bad the Vortechs I once had. Running at it's highest power is necessary right now and i'm glad I went with 2 as this single one is not as much flow as i'd like. The reverse on the Gyres are pretty weak. But over all i'm happy with my decision to go with the Gyres. I can't wait to have them both running together.
More of a Gyre opinion than a tank update but i'm waiting for the 2015 Tank pic thread to open to add a pic.

That's pretty good replacing 5 powerheads with 2. I can't wait for the smaller gyres to be available.

The one Gyre that is working is awesome, it replaced 5 Tunzes.
As for the second one...... no I'm waiting for parts. Bunch of bullcrap as I ordered this thing overnight express on Dec23 and did not receive until Dec29th and was told that the retailer will not warranty. I want a new one but apparently CoralVue which is the distributor says that they are doing me a courtesy by sending replacement parts.
In my eyes the store should be giving me a replacement and they can deal with the so called distributor themselves.

Oops I made a slight typo in my earlier post. The group is "Prince George B.C. Salt Water Community" There are periods between B and C and Saltwater is split into two words. Hopefully now you can find it.

Yea sure Mindy! Here ya go.
I have'nt really been in to my tank for a while. I've kinda lost interest in the hobby and finding it quite boring. Nothing new or exciting about it lately. A month or so ago my Pinktail Trigger decided to tuen in to a serial killer and started killing my fish. Lost a few hundred dollars worth of fish and also have a one-eyed blenny now. So I gave him to our LFS and ordered a Hippo Tang and a Blonde Naso Tang from J&L. Oh and I got a Halequin Tusk a while back. Maybe the upcoming winter months when I put my RC planes and trucks away will get me interested again.

Hey, Bill, your tank looks very nice actually. Sometimes boring is good. That means everything is doing well, and easy to maintain. Then you can just sit back and enjoy it without a lot of work.

Hey thanks guys. Yea everything seems to be going smooth which does add to the boredom.
As with everyone else's tank it looks better in person. I'm not in to photography at all, other than with my drone. I have too many hobbies and don't need another.
Most exciting thing was when I had to dismantle my rock work to get the pink tailed trigger out. I punish myself everytime. Those prickly hard things that grow on the rocks are killer on my hands. Grabbing them and than grabbing zoos is not a fun task. Booked off work for two days after. Funny thing is I know everytime

I decided to take a livestock list and this is what I have:

Hippo Tang
Yellow Tang
Yellow Eye Kole Tang
Blonde Naso Tang
Orange Shoulder Tang
Maculiceps Tang
Red Coris Wrasse
Harlequin Tusk
Yellow Wrasse
Bluehead Wrasse
Vanuatu Wrasse
Lawnmower Blenny
Pinkspot Goby
Coral Beauty Angel
Longnosed Hawkfish
Percula Clownfish X 2
Tiger Pistol Shrimp
I have no inverts and well the SPS I have I don't know what they are.
